(July 18) - Putting an end to media rumors about her departure, Katie Couric confirmed Friday that she will be staying at 'CBS Evening News'.
"We have no plans to part company anytime soon," the anchor said at a television press tour, EW's Michael Ausiello reports.
"There were a lot of speculative pieces that have been spun out of control. I’m very committed to the people and here and the product. I think [the rumors are] dying down considerably."

Couric Leaving CBS Early?

Facing media rumors about her possible departure from CBS News, Katie Couric set the record straight in July: "There were a lot of speculative pieces that have been spin out of control," she said. "We have no plans to part company anytime soon."

A tumultuous 20 months in the 'CBS Evening News' anchor chair caused word to spread in early April that Couric may not make it to the end of her contract with the network. She later denied these rumors.

In April, rumors swirled that Couric and CNN's Anderson Cooper might be involved in a swap of sorts, with Couric going to the cable news network and Cooper taking over her anchor throne.

Couric's tenure at CBS has been rough from day one. After initial curiosity wore off in the early weeks, Couric's ratings began tumbling, and the downward spiral has yet to stop. 'CBS Evening News' constantly -- and easily -- comes in third among the big three.

For the week of March 31, Couric's newscasts drew an average of 5.9 million viewers. The broadcasts of NBC's Brian Williams and ABC's Charles Gibson both topped 8 million viewers.

Couric started at CBS on Sept. 5, 2006, taking over at the anchor desk for Bob Schieffer. The deal was groundbreaking, as Couric was the first woman to solely anchor a network news broadcast. Her salary also made headlines -- reportedly $15 million per year.

Many wondered whether Couric, seen here interviewing Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, would be able to dive into hard news after providing family-friendly content during her 'Today' show era.

Couric, seen here in a 1993 'Today' photo, said that at CBS, she is currently "working hard and having fun. My colleagues continue to impress me with their commitment to the newscast, and I am very proud of the show we put on every day."

Couric went on to say that her first priority is staying committed to the CBS viewers. "I spend every day focused on doing the best job I can," she said.
