'24' Star Sutherland Busted for DUI

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 25) - Kiefer Sutherland, who stars on the hit TV thriller "24" as a secret agent with nerves of steel, was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving on Tuesday, hours before he was due to be honored by a Canadian actors' union.

The rape rap pinned on Poison drummer Rikki Rockett has turned out to be a case of stolen identity. The rocker was arrested in March on a warrant out of Mississippi, but the rocker proved he was in California at the time of the alleged assault, and police are looking for an impostor posing as rock stars to pick up women.

The arrest comes three years after the Canadian performer, 40, the son of actor Donald Sutherland, pleaded no contest to a charge of driving under the influence and was ordered into a treatment program for alcohol abuse.

Los Angeles police said they stopped Sutherland's car shortly near the boundaries of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood after 1 a.m. after he was seen making an illegal U-turn.

A breath test found him to be over the legal blood-alcohol limit, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, a police spokeswoman said.

She said Sutherland was taken to the police station in Hollywood, where he posted $25,000 bail and was released. He is due to appear in court on October 16.

No further details were available, but the celebrity news Web site TMZ.com quoted an unnamed police source as describing Sutherland as "cooperative and mellow" while in custody.

The arrest came hours before Sutherland, who spent much of his boyhood in Toronto, was to be honored by the Alliance of Canadian Cinema, Television and Radio Artists (ACTRA) at the residence of Canada's Consul General in Los Angeles.

An ACTRA spokeswoman said the awards ceremony would go on as planned but be closed to the media. A spokeswoman for the actor said he would attend, but she declined further comment.

In 2004, Sutherland was placed on 60 months probation, fined $500 and ordered to perform 50 hours of community service after pleading no contest, the equivalent of a guilty plea in California, to DUI, a city attorney's spokesman said.

He filed proof of completing community service and the alcohol treatment program the following May, the spokesman said.

Sutherland last year earned an Emmy Award, U.S. television's highest honor, for his role as the globe-trotting, terrorist-fighting agent Jack Bauer on "24," one of Fox network's top-rated shows.

Averaging 13.5 million viewers earlier this year, the show returns to the airwaves for its seventh season in January.

There was no official word from the network or producers of "24," but a source close to the series said Sutherland's arrest was not expected to affect production of the show.

He's the same as you folks that don't have alot of money rather buy another drink or 2 instead of pay a few bucks and get a ride home, Ain't no dam cop gonna get you!!!!!!!!!!!! I run a drunk cab service and the folks here are catching on! 10 bucks beats $2500 just to get out of jail and another $10,000 or more in lawyer and court costs!!

High profile people need to be smarter.I see all kinds of reckless drivers around cutting U's , running stop signs, tailgaters,runiing lights, erratic lane changers, speeders, even driving while drinking...literally. And never a cop around. Admiit it.How many times have we asked...Where is a cop when we need one? But they are with the perks comes the harrasment. Don't even say some of you out there haven't stopped to have a couple or three cold ones and hopped in your car ,no designated driver and drove your own drunk ass home. Not saying it is right but you can bet some of these same people are the first to judge some one of high profile status. Cops wanting to be in the paper. Photographers and reporters looking for stories. I believe when you drink you shouldn't drive, but I would hate to be staked out waiting for me to do something too. They probably follwed him to the place and saw him take the first drink and waited in the shadows. I don't fault him for being human. I fault him f

He has a cellphone. He could call someone. A cab, a limo... a friend... but NO Kiefer just decides to drive. It makes no difference to him that he is still on parole until 2009 for the exact same charge. Bad choices Kiefer, bad choices.

One night, a police officer was staking out a particularly rowdy bar for possible violations of the driving-under-the-influence laws.

At closing time, he saw a fellow stumble out of the bar, trip on the curb, and try his keys on five different cars before he found his. Then the man sat in the front seat fumbling around with his keys for several minutes. By this time everyone had left the bar and drove off.

Finally, he started his engine and began to pull away. However, the police officer was waiting for him.

The cop stops the driver, reads him his rights and administers the breathalyzer test. The results show a reading of 0.0% blood alcohol. The puzzled officer demands to know how that could be.
