Hugh Laurie Admits Flirting With Vicodin

Attempt at Method Acting; 'House' Star Also Thinks UK Snubbed Him

(March 11) - Not that he's been labeled a realistic method actor before, but Hugh Laurie admits he attempted to get closer to the character he portrays on "House" -- by experimenting with Vicodin, the strong painkiller to which Dr. Gregory House is addicted.

"I wouldn't recommend it -- we have to be careful," Laurie, 48, tells Britain's Radio Times magazine, "But then again … if you’re not in pain it gives a floaty, pleasurable feeling." Read Full Story at PEOPLE

The Golden Globe-winning actor also opined that his native England has turned his back on him now that he's a success in the United States.

"The door slammed behind me, and that's it. There's a notion that I've sold out," he said.

About his success in America, Laurie said: "There's a peculiar British attitude that I took an oath I wouldn't be successful, and reneged on it."

Laurie added that the hit FOX medical drama has taken him "off the market" for any other work, saying there is "no time to do anything else."

Eradicating his British accent was also a challenge, and watching himself on the small screen doesn't sit well in him.

"I don't watch regularly, I hate seeing myself, but it's even worse hearing my American accent. I had no idea I sound so retarded, a dull monotone, full of clunking mistakes."

I dont think that coming down on people who are addicted to these medications as if they are harming those of us who suffer from chronic pain conditions is the way to go. Addicts also suffer from a disease, an extremely powerful one. Society has decided that it is worth the risk for those people with addictive personality traits to be exposed to an extremely addictive and potentially lethat drug, so that other individuals living with pain can have access to that drug. Yes, people make stupid choices to abuse prescriptions, but far more people have experimented that those who become truly addicted and they all took the same risk of experimenting, turned out worse for some than others. Dont be so quick to judge.

I think his American accent is wonderful, far better than some Americans who try to do an English accent. He should not be so hard on himself. As for the Vicodin, So long as he does not become addicted I can understand the curiosity. I am currently taking it for a recent root canal. I only take it when the pain becomes unbearable and I need to sleep. Otherwise the stuff makes me loopy and I hate the feeling.

Wow. The sheer ignorance displayed in these blogs is unbelievable. Isn't it just great - that we have television and movie "stars" advocating if not simply exemplifying the misuse of prescription medications. I'm a patient who lives with severe pain, when not controlled. And the hoops I have to jump through just to be made "FUNCTIONAL" - won't even say "comfortable" because that's not even the case - are huge. People like Laurie and Stallone and all the other recent crop of a-holes who are leading by their own twisted examples are going to have blood on their hands - it's not about the guy who eats a couple of spare vic's - it's gonna be about the guy who already took 12, read some of these blogs, and washes down another two with a shot of Jamison. That guy might not wake up. Now what? Anyone can build up a dangerous addiction to these drugs - but what's even more concerning is the person who builds up a self-diagnosed "tolerance" - assuming that they just need more, and more to do

He flirted with Vicodin, so what. Big deal, everyone in this day and time is addicted to something whether or not we admit to it. As for his comment about how he sounded with an American accent, he was talking about how he sounded not how Americans sounds in general. I am a House fanatic, I have all 3 seasons on DVD and this does not change the way I feel about the show or him. II love all of Hugh Laurie's acting. And for those people who don't want to watch the show anymore due to this, well that's your own decision. But he does not need to apologize for his comment. He said nothing wrong.

I THINK THE OPINION OF HUGH IS ALREADY ,,BAD(WORSE ) NOT SURE HOW THAT WOULD BE ,,,MAYBE 15 YEARS AGO PEOPLE MAY HAVE TSK TSK AT IT BUT IN THIS DAY AND AGE ITS ALMOST COMMON LIKE ASPRIN NOT A BIG DEAL RIGHT ,,LIMBAUGH ??? THE REASON I WOULD HAVE TO SAY ...IN MY BEST AMERICAN ACCENT OF COURSE IS "STUPID ", MUCH LIKE HIM ,,

I can't even believe someone was offended because the man doesn't like the way his American accent sounds! They're going to stop watching House, and everthing else on FOX until he makes a public apology!
Good Lord, this is WHY the rest of the world thinks we're a bunch of ignorant fools. The accent is just an identifying trait. And btw, even Canadians think we sound uneducated when we speak . . . because most of us DO!

Someone very close to me died as a result of over dosing on vicodin. It was prescribed legally. Do your homework. Anyone who thinks its funny is obviously a moron.

ecurry10, FYI..Acetominophen (Tylenol), the ingredient in Vicodin, is damaging to the kidneys and liver for sure, but you can safely take up tp 1400 milligrams in 24 hours and have no adverse effects on the other organs.

Hugh Laurie also appeared as an airplane passenger on "Friends" with Jennifer Aniston...As far as Vicodin goes, I take painkillers for my back, have for about 5 years, I've gone from Darvocet (junk), to Tylenol #4 with codeine, Those are quite nice), and presently I am taking Percocet for the pain, and I find that 2 don't work ! It's pretty bad, I have a herniated disc and degenerative disc disease, so I've tried everything, even Oxycontin, but the difference between me and some of these people is that I just want to get rid of the pain, I don't worry about a buzz, sometimes I get a buzz anyway. And that's fine too, when I'm home, but wouldn't go over too well at work LOL...anyway, what I have found to work well is Tramadol,(Ultram); an anti-inflammatory, and one or two Percocet or Vicodin, it helps me the most, and I'm not too messed up to do the stuff I need to do. Except drive, of course.
