(March 18) -- These says, biting into a delicious crisp apple gives Scottish actor James Cosmo a kind of joy he lacked much of his life. He owes such simple pleasures to a new set of dental implants he received late last year, London's Daily Mail reports.
As with many other denture wearers, standard implants weren't an option for Cosmo because he didn't have enough bone in his jaw to sustain them. But a new type of implants offers an alternative for people in his situation. The method uses titanium screws that attach deep into the cheek bone, instead of into the jaw.

Cosmo wore dentures for 50 years, getting his first fitting at just 12, the Mail said. Over the years, he eventually lost all of his teeth, many of which were dislodged while he performed his own in action scenes for such films as 'Braveheart,' 'Highlander' and 'Troy.' In addition to limiting the foods he could enjoy, the dentures also destroyed his sense of taste.
While filming 'To End All Wars,' with fellow stars Kiefer Sutherland and Robert Carlyle, Cosmo had a frightening experience that convinced him something had to be done. When a co-star pushed him to the ground, he felt his dentures loosen and edge toward the back of his throat. 'It was very frightening -- I thought I was going to choke,' James told the Mail.
Cosmo underwent a series of procedures for the implants, and six months later, says he couldn't be more pleased.
"I'm evangelical about my implants, because after almost five decades I finally have my teeth back," Cosmo told the Mail. "Having proper teeth again is fantastic, as is knowing that I'll never have to worry about losing them again."
