(June 25) -- A 14-year-old boy is fighting off a flesh-eating bacteria he may have picked up from swimming in a local lake.
Matthew McKinney of Hope Mills, N.C., is infected with the common bacteria Chromobacterium violaceum, that is spreading through his body, according to a report from local ABC-affiliate WTVD-TV.

The bacteria is found in the sand and mud at the bottom of lakes. "It's everywhere, it's natural," Matthew's father, Brian McKinney, told CNN. "The reason it's so rare is because typically...it doesn't affect you."
Doctors have removed part of Matthew's nose, half of the palate of his mouth and five of his teeth in an effort to stop the spread of the bacteria.
Matthew is believed to have picked up the bacteria when he swam in Hope Mills Lake on June 14. Public health officials say it was likely introduced to Matthew's body through an open wound, but his father says he didn't have any cuts.
According to WTVD, the CDC recorded only 150 cases of this infection worldwide between 1927 and 2005.

OK Brother and Sisters. Without my Scooter myself due to a traumatic Crash that left me disabled but not UNABLE! Calling all BIKERS. Can we as the people Of Fayetteville, Hope Mills, Fort Bragg and the surrounding areas come together to do a benefit for this young child and his parents? I personally have never Coordinated a befit run or anything else similar. If anyone knows the ins and outs of what needs to be done, please contact me at midnights0n@aol.com. The "o" in "son" is a Zero"!Come on people. Bikers, Police, Fire Department, Churches. Is there anything we can do. After my crash I was in a coma for 14 days after being on life support for 4 days. With all the injuries I suffered, I do believe the good lord left me here for a reason. This may be it. Then again, it may be just Part (1) of what God needs me to fulfill. Please help me help this child and family!.. Blessing to all.MidNight S0N

Rye656 07:54 PMJun 26 2009 I wish him well. Bacteria are ubiquitious. What we are seeing are mutant strains of common bacteria that have evolved resistance to our arsenal of antibiotics and disinfectants because of the indiscriminate use of them.------------------Why does the medical community not address what really works against super bacteria, viruses and fungus ? $$$$$$$$$$$$$ at our expense. GARLIC destroys bacteria and does not allow it to mutate, kills viruses and fungus also. It is multideminional. Oil of oregano is very powerfull also yet this is about what the medical community can make off of us. The wise will be taking garlic. EOM.

I wish this poor kid well. Imagine, taking a swim in a lake that you've probably swam in dozens of times before, then coming down with this? A good way to stop this from happening to kids in the future is to make your kids wear 'swim shoes', or whatever they're called. He probably wouldn't have contracted this infection if his feet had been protected. Best of luck young man...
