Posters featuring blackened lungs and other effects of smoking could be posted at cigarette retailers in New York City.

(June 30) -- Blackened lung tissue. Amputated finger tips. Tracheotomy scars. Sound appetizing?
These images could be part of a new antismoking campaign in New York City. A proposal from the city's Department of Mental Health and Hygiene suggests prominently displaying antismoking signs near the cash registers of all cigarette retailers.
The legislation would be the first of its kind in the United States. And while Canada, New Zealand and Australia currently have sign requirements, New York would be the first to include graphics, according to The New York Times' City Room blog.
The graphic nature of the graphics has drawn some complaints. Though gruesome visuals have been the most effective way of inciting New Yorkers to pursue quitting, according to the Times' blog, forcing people to look at them while they shop may be controversial.
The measure is for the collective good, Health Department Commissioner Thomas A. Farley told The New York Times.

"The issue is that when people go to the store, they get advertisements encouraging them to smoke, encouraging them to pick up what is an addictive drug and is killing people," he said. "So we need to balance that with some information that protects people."
The Times' report on the proposed campaign suggests that the graphic posters may be going a step too far, not only forcing unpleasant images onto those New Yorkers who don't smoke, but taking too many liberties with government influence over the public. The report offered the comparison of posting photos of morbidly obese people at candy counters, to highlight the impact of too many candy bars.
But Sarah B. Perl, the health department's assistant commissioner for tobacco control, supports the signs. She told the Times the city wants to balance the advertising from cigarette manufacturers already present at cash registers.
"It’s really about getting them at the point-of-sale moment," Perl said.
For more on the campaign, read The New York Times article.

Smokers are the only minority group in this country that can legally be discriminated against.

The problem is one, those who simplify a complex health issue, who fail to take into account other mitigating factors including nutritional status, exercise and other lifestyle factors. Not everyone is going to be sick from smoking. On the other hand, not all non-smokers are going to automatically be the picture of health. If they are avoiding a variety of vegetables-including cancer- and heart-disease- fighting anti-oxidants for instance-consume denatured starches, or use toxic cleaning chemicals, take dangerous pharmaceutical drugs, and much much more, they are not necessarily any healthier. In all cases, choices must be made by each individual. Tobacco has been used for thousands of years. As for pollution, why not look at bigger sources of that. The root of the anti-smoking campaign is holier than thou busybodies with way too much time on their hands.

Two separate issues: health of smoker and health of environment. To solve one is not the government's business. Are they going to put graphic posters outside fast food places? Next to aisles selling denatured starchy white bread stands in the supermarket? Will they try to coerce shoppers into only buying whole grains and vegetables instead of sodium-laden convenience products that are devoid of nutritional value? How about the pharmaceutical racket: Dangerous drugs that kill victims regularly? In a free country people need to live and let live. Disease can happen from any number of reasons, and is also associated with lower income and many, many other factors. Which goes into the second part, which is that there are many, many sources of air pollution. Bottom line, those who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Too many busybodies in this society as it is. Clean your own backyard before zeroing in on your neighbors' habits.

Smokers pollute our air with toxic smoke, pollute the land with their butts. Not to mention the burden they put on our health care. It's nasty and just plain ignorant to smoke. More power to these new laws and campaigns!

As I sit here smoking my camel I think to myself ,"WHY THE HELL WON'T NON-SMOKERS AND THE GOVERNMENT LEAVE THE SMOKERS ALONE?" DO they not see the revenue produced by the sale of tobacco? If we want to die let us, Why are there not graphic photos of mangled bodies, and innocent families slaughtered on the highway to help detour drinking and driving? I will continue to smoke until they lay my cold, lung cancer ridden body in the ground, and to hell with the government and the non-smoking, vegan, animal rights, bible thumping hypocrites who nag me about it.

smoking and alcohol are as bad if not worse than street drugs. they are responsible for more deaths and ailments annually. nicotine is really no different from crack or dope. i never understood why it isnt illegal.(im a smoker, but i still dont get it)

The funny thing is everyone wants to knock smoking when there are more deaths caused by drunk drivers and auto accidents alone. I am a firefighter/emt in South Carolina. And after 8 years in this service I've yet to see someone die due to smoking. You inhale alot worse breathing the air outside, especially where smog is real heavy. And so you guys know everday you breath in phosgene gas, cyanide gas, and just imagine all of the other chemicals floating in the air. I am a smoker and I don't plan on quitting anytime soon. Maybe you guys should present the facts about alcohol, prescription pills(since so many people are addicted to them). Another thing that bugged me is that in South Carolina the cigarette increased, why not alcohol as well. Seems only fair to me.
