Parents Cope With Schizophrenic Child

(July 1) -- At just 6 years old, January Schofield has schizophrenia. She suffers from delusions and hallucinations, and has such violent fits that even her parents feel threatened, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Most schizophrenics become ill in their late teens or 20s, and the rate of onset for children under 13 is about one in 30,000 to 50,000.

Doctors think Jani, who has dozens of phantom animal friends, was born mentally ill.
"Child-onset schizophrenia is 20 to 30 times more severe than adult-onset schizophrenia," Dr. Nitin Gogtay, a neurologist at the National Institute of Mental Health, told the Times.
"Ninety-five percent of the time they are awake these kids are actively hallucinating," Gogtay said. "I don't think I've seen anything more devastating in all of medicine."
Jani has been on heavy doses of anti-psychotic medications, but often doesn't respond or suffers from severe side effects.
Asked during a recent stay in the UCLA psychiatric ward if her new medication was working, Jani said, "No. I have more friends," the Times reported.
She's tried to jump out of windows, tried to push the car out of gear while her father was driving, and screams, hits, kicks and bites.
Jani can be so violent that her parents, Michael and Susan Schofield, have had to rent two separate apartments in the same complex in California to protect her 18-month-old brother, Bohdi, from Jani -- and to protect Jani from herself. They take turns, with one staying a night with Jani and the other with Bohdi, then switching. The on-duty parent is referred to as her "staff."
Although the arrangement has been hard on the family, they saw it as their only choice.
"If Jani was 16, there would be resources," her father said. "But very few hospitals, private or public, will take a 6-year-old."
"I'm not hanging on to the hope that she'll get better," he told the paper. "My biggest fear is that she won't live to 18."
"I have more hope," said her mother.

I've decided that most of the people posting here should be shot.I have child onset schizophrenia. I still have schizophrenia. Life has not been easy for me or my mom. But it's worth it. I've been suicidal, I've been in psyche wards, I've hurt other people. I'm 19 now, have a job, and live on my own. I'm a model and was featured in the book 100 Young Americans. This girl has a bright future. Schizophrenics are some of the most intelligent and beautiful people. It's disgusting that people have the view of us the way they do.This girl is only 6. She has the maturity of a 6 year old, and is dealing with things most adults could only dream of. She will grow and learn to control her disability, its much more manageable when you grow up.All you ******** are the ones who deserve to be sterilized and put to sleep, not this beautiful girl.

It would be good if a president considered mental illness a weapon of mass destruction and put trillions of dollars waging war on that.

Of course this was removed from the front page of AOL due to its child-sensitve topic. Okay. To doctors any drug is the drug of choice. Might the parents last result be brain surgery? Of course that would be called unnecessary by some but if it's your child (since it's all about the children) where's the fight in these parents? Just saying. Instead of remaining planted where they are, giving up "hope" and having their daughter being treated as a drug guinea pig any further why don't they actually TRY EVERYTHING instead just trying every drug and with drug side effects, the story fails to mention whether those drugs causing side effects, actually worked. Side effects are to be expected with drugs and frankly should be the least of their problems when the girl is that sick and all they've done is "kinda all they've could."

Anyone who is not going to bring religion into this subject, I do have a question: obviously schizophrenia can be brought on by a break in the barrier of this child's diathesis stress level... for anyone who does practice a form of psychology, do you know if it's possible for something to have happened in the womb that could put a great amount of stress on the child that may lead to being born "mentally ill?"Although, to AngelRehabTherapy, I have not seen the video yet and I am a strong believer in a possibility of the child seeing spirits. For the most part, children are very much prone to seeing what others cannot due to a high sensitivity level. Completely unexplainable but because some are skeptics no doctor would accept this type of explanation...hopefully if the child sees a psychic, she could find a better way to cope... no child should be put on huge amounts of medication for something that definitely has a cause or explanation

Having been a Psychiatric Social Worker for 40 years, working with those who live with Schizophrenia, I can only say God bless her and her care takers. In forty years I only encountered Schizohprenia in youth a few times, and it is heartbreaking and so severe as to offer almost no hope.

Its funny how my comment at 10:50 p.m was marked as explicit just because I had scriptures from the Holy Bible in it. Others had the term demon possession in it but was not tampered with. That pretty much proves my evaluation in my 3:29 a.m. comment to keensiepeach. BTW in that comment I mentioned in the end how if one wants to know Jesus Christ all they have to do is ask Him to forgive them. He is eager to forgive us and make us apart of His family because He loves us. No matter what we have done or are doing, He will forgive us. He is waiting.

KEENSIEPEACH..................HI. YES THERE IS A GOD, HIS SON JESUS CHRIST, ANGELS, DEMONS, HEAVEN AND A HELL. I AM NOT GOING TO PREACH TO YOU, BUT I DO WANT TO SAY THAT IF YOU WANT TO REALLY KNOW THE TRUTH, IT WILL BE REVEALED. JUST ASK YOURSELF WHY DOES EVERYONE GET SO UPTIGHT WHEN THE NAME OF JESUS IS MENTIONED OR THE WORD CHRISTIAN. PEOPLE CAN SAY MUSLIM, NATION OF ISLAM, LOST TRIBE OF JUDAH, HARE KRISHNA, BAHIA, CATHOLIC.......AND THE WORLD SAYS "OH", BUT WHEN SOMEONE SAYS THEY BELIEVE IN CHRIST JESUS AND HIS RESSURECTION AND SECOND COMING AND HIS FREE GIFT OF SALVATION AND HIS FORGIVENESS OF ALL SINS AND WRONG DOINGS......EVERYONE BEGINS TO WATCH AND JUDGE THAT INDIVIDUAL. JUST ASK YOURSELF IF GOD/JESUS CHRIST IS REAL. WHAT IF THE TRUTH ABOUT SOMETHING WAS OUT THERE CONCERNING SOMETHING AND YOU DID NOT KNOW IT, BUT YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO. WOULDN'T YOU WANT TO KNOW THE REAL TRUTH. I WOULD. I JUST WANT TO KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT THINGS. SO IF YOU DO DECIDE TO KNOW HIM JUST KNOW TH...
