(May 4) - A 10-month-old Utah child has a medical illness that's bewildering doctors: She's shrinking. Maggie Agnew weighs just over 10 pounds -- well below the average weight of children the same age -- and is continually losing weight and muscle mass.
"She's getting plenty of calories, but her body is burning all the calories that she's getting and they don't know where it's going to," her father told MSNBC.
Maggie was born prematurely and suffers from other health problems, including a hole in her heart and an irregular heartbeat. But specialists in Utah can't figure out why the child is suffering the weight and muscle loss. They recommended that she be taken to a hospital in Boston for further tests, her father said.

BEHLL 02:05 AMMay 06 2009 One of my daughters was born with a hole in her heart, Ventricular Septum Defect(VSD). She kept going into Heart Failure, lost her voice totally and stopped growing. was born weighing 7'11", 19 ins long, gained up to 8 lbs even, then stopped growing. The doctors/hospital had put her on Lanoxin/Digitalis and it was killing her. She couldn't crawl until she was a year old, couldn't walk until she was nearly two. The doctors gave up on her, sent her home to die, said there was nothing they could do for her. She only got better after I stopped giving her the Lanoxin, then she went on to be a very bright healthy child... Is 34 yrs old now-------Wow, what a great story. That must of been a very bad time for you when she was on the medicine. It's great to hear a story like this.

"They don't know where the calories are going that she burns"... she has an abnormal heart beat, and a "hole" in her heart. Although I am not sure exactly what that hole in her heart means, if she was premature, her heart has been working extraneously since birth. Her heart is causing her to burn the amount of calories an adult would... I hope they are looking into that. -Andrew Birnstengel

MMHR4733 11:15 AMMay 17 2009 You have to remember you all they are in Utah and they are Mormons. And Mormons do not allowed meds of no kinds they tell you what is wrong with the child and they do end up dying. Mormons Church runs the peoples lives there in there Utah. Just like the other one called Christian Scientist that Tom Cruise belongs too. These 2 religions runs your life and your health so sad indeedSorry to say you're uninformed and ignorant about the LDS faith. The mormons go to doctors and use medicine. There are also other religions present in Utah than mormons, although they are a distinct minority. So the child is probably born to a mormon family, it's not definate though. I really do find your ignorance rather pathetic.
