(July 13) -- That muttered curse word that reflexively comes out when you stub your toe could actually make it easier to bear the throbbing pain, a new study suggests.

Yeah, I'll swear if I hurt myself out of my own stupid actions (having a wrench slip and get cut, hit my thumb with a hammer, hit the bed rail with my foot and toes, falling into the toilet after a rough night of drinking, etc., etc.). However, sometimes I will kick at or take a swing at something inanimate that hurts me. Yeah, its stupid because it usually gets me hurt much worse. But after the pain quickly subsides I usually feel much better because I 'hurt' something that hurt me. You just can't do the same thing with people, kids, pets, etc. Pick and chose your battles wisely because this in the course of a day would be considered 'small stuff.'

Someone actually paid money for this study? Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the overeducated, overfunded "experts" have some really stupid ideas? How about we used that money to feed the hungry in this country instead of funding idiotic studies.

I sure would like to see the whole study. Seems to me any repeated word would be like meditaion and should let you keep your hand in the ice water longer. Heck I would bet repeating the Lord's Prayer over and over would be as effective.

It's true. If you bump your arm, or whatever, and it hurts, little kids do what? - They cry. Adults don't cry, we utter something quickly, usually a swear word. I have always said it makes me feel better. Now scientific research backs me up! I'm so smart. ;)

The next time you stub your toe, don\'t feel bad if you let a curse word slip. Researchers in England think swearing may increase your body\'s aggression levels, thereby helping you fight through the pain.\n\n\n
