Residents along the U.S. Gulf Coast who refused to evacuate the area ahead of Ida are likely feeling a bit vindicated as the storm sloshes ashore in a weakened state.

Not that anyone's complaining, but as hurricane seasons go, this one has been pretty wimpy. Ida, which hit Nicaragua on Thursday, is only the third Atlantic storm to reach hurricane strength this year, and it's not expected to be a problem for the U.S. A National Hurricane Center official explains what's going on.

Despite weakening to a Category 1 storm, Hurricane Rick kicks up big waves near Mexico's resort city of Los Cabos and kills two people. The storm is expected to continue weakening and approach the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula late Tuesday or early Wednesday, forecasters say.

Weather officials say Hurricane Rick is expected to lose steam before bearing down on the Baja California Peninsula by midweek, but still could bring trouble to resorts there. The Category 5 hurricane is the strongest eastern North Pacific storm in more than a decade.
