An Italian judge convicts 23 Americans in absentia for the CIA's kidnapping of a terrorism suspect in 2003, and says he may seek arrest warrants for them. The case stems from the capture of a cleric known as Abu Omar, who says he was tortured in Egypt while in custody. It is the first time any government has held a trial on the CIA's rendition program.

Supreme Court to Hear Guantanamo Case

Over objections of the Obama administration and Congress, the Supreme Court agrees to decide whether 13 Chinese Muslims, or Uighurs, held at the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba since 2001 can be released in the United States. The Pentagon cleared the group for release six years ago, but the Uighurs fear they would be arrested or tortured if sent back to China.

A man arrested for allegedly planning a terrorist attack in the U.S. and abroad appears defiant in a federal courtroom. Tarek Mehanna, of Sudbury, conspired with others for years to eventually "kill, kidnap, maim or injure" people around the world, authorities say. His alleged targets were two politicians, mall shoppers and U.S. troops in Iraq.
