Cenk Uygur claims that Nancy Pelosi, by visiting Syria, "is doing [President] Bush's job for him." In support of this assertion, Uygur notes that Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert "had to find some way to get a diplomatic message to Syria. So, he chose the one responsible senior US stateswoman going there -- Nancy Pelosi." But Pelosi wasn't sufficiently responsible to avoid the need for Olmert to issue a clarification of his country's position following the Speaker's public statement on the subject.
In light of "quotes attributed to Pelosi," Olmert's office felt compelled to say that "although Israel is interested in peace with Syria, that country continues to be part of the axis of evil and a force that encourages terror in the entire Middle East." Olmert's office added that "in order to conduct serious and genuine peace negotiations, Syria must cease its support of terror, cease its sponsoring of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad organizations, refrain from providing weapons to Hizbollah and bringing about the destabilizing of Lebanon, cease its support of terror in Iraq, and relinquish the strategic ties it is building with the extremist regime in Iran."
This, of course, has been Israel's position throughout, so Uygur is completely off base in claiming that Olmert is employing Pelosi to any substantive purpose. Instead, Olmert had to waste his time mopping up after Pelosi. But if Pelosi remembered to tell Assad that he's "part of the axis of evil," it was worth the extra effort.

It appears to me that as a Rep to Congress and NOT a member of the State Dept, that we could arrive at the conclusion that she (and many others) are interferring!
These Sens and Reps need to get off their pedestal and go back to the states they represent when on recess. Perhaps they would learn more about how to represent us when they return!

Scrapiron, I would love to hear your facts outlining how we did not lose the Vietnam War instead of just calling me a liar. Our objective was to prevent the North Vietnamese government from conquering South Vietnam and thus spreading Communism. Considering that was the end result I would call it a defeat: We did not accomplish our objectives, thus it was not a victory. Even Westmoreland admitted that long before the war officially ended. You were there, you know we did not aggressively deal with North Vietnam in an offensive capacity (other than bombing which had little effect on their ability to wage war) and that was a recipe for defeat or unending conflict.
Honestly, I think your service was admirable, you put your life on the line for this country and that is something to absolutely be proud of. But when we go to war we always must consider whether it is truly necessary for the security of our country or if there are alterior motives which are not as vital to the American people. It was Democrats who got us into Vietnam, so this is not a partisan issue, it is a question of wasting the lives of our sons and daughters over issues which are not vitally important to each and every American. Let's look at Vietnam today: Even thought the Communists took over they realized that our capitalist tourist dollars were much better for their economy, and now they are practically an ally. I'm not suggesting that if we leave Iraq there will be a similar result but the dire predictions of the Republican party that Iraq will turn into a terrorist safe-haven are not exactly grounded, considering the hostility to Al Qaeda both the Sunni's and Shiite's have expressed lately.
It is ridiculous to insinuate that I or most other Democrats do not support the troops, I have family in Iraq and the greatest support I can give them is to end the war and get them home when they are fighting for something that was never justified in the first place. We have no say in Iraqi political affairs and if they want to stop the violence political solutions are all that can do that. Without our support they would be pressured to make those difficult concessions to the Sunni's in terms of oil wealth distribution and that would do more to stabilize the country than our military ever could.

I wonder whether this is a smokescreen. Maybe it's merely to make diplomacy with the evildoers acceptable and effective that Bush is honking off about Pelosi. It makes his base (which hates the idea of interacting with the enemy sans bombs) happy and it validates Pelosi's interactions because nearly the whole world hates him, et al.
