Hey Harry, everybody is entitled to their opinion. But the uproar is about calling Spanish, a ghetto language. He had nothing factual to base that statement on, and so he apologized. I don't think he apolgized for the rest of his views, even though he weaken his case when he decided to speak Spanish to apolgize. It watered down his position. Thanks. dr

50. Newt (Lizard) Gingrich is such an arrogant bigot that he assumes that anybody who speaks Spanish must live in the ghetto in dire poverty!. Well, if that is the truth, why is he learning and mangling the Spanish language? I know that he has presidential aspirations, so he better be careful with his big mouth because he might have to go crawling to the ghetto to beg for votes! Not that will do him any good anyway, because he does not have an iota of a chance of ever being president!

To begin with, I have been in the "Movement" since the 1960's and am not aware of any Latino leader that does not believe that having a command of the English language is not important, in fact, I was involved in lobbying for the initial bilingual education bill and all along our motivation was to ensure that Latinos became fluent in English. Bilingual education was meant to help transition from Spanish to English.
As to Newt's explanation for his remarks, the time has come for our community to practice the art of diplomacy and learn to reach across barriers to our progress and standing in America with facts and intelligence so I for one accept what he said and hope this will be a beginniing to his immersion in Latino politics and contributions to this great country so that in the future he can address the greatness of our contributions.

54. Newt Gingrich is one of the smartest and most well spoken politicians around. I am hispanic myself and found no offense to his comment. This is America and ENGLISH is the first language. I believe everyone who wants the blessings of this country should also learn the language, simple as that!
Any person can spend their time finding offense out of what Mr. Gingrich, or anyone else for that matter says. Unfortunately too many people in this country spend their time doing just that! And I feel sorry for all those that do.

If you want to find something to take offense to, go listen to Howard Stern for even five minutes. What a disgrace he is to the American public.
