Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria has met with the approval of Islamic Jihad and the terrorist from the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades who seized the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. But, to their credit, key elements of the liberal press in this country continue to be appalled by Pelosi's attempt at diplomacy with Syria. Thus, USA. Today finds that "Pelosi stepped out of bounds on [her] ill-conceived trip to Syria." USA. Today happens to disagree with the administration's policy of not talking to Syria. However, it understands that disagreement with the president is no excuse to "violate the long-held understanding that the United States should speak with one official voice abroad - even if the country is deeply divided on foreign policy back home." In other words, USA Today understands the meaning of loyal opposition in our democratic system.

I agree with you completely on this one. Foreign policy is the president's job, and no matter how bad he is at it that doesn't give the speaker the right to subvert his authority. On the same note, the republican representatives who visited are guilty of that subversion as well.
That said I believe the Bush administration's policy of isolating Iran and Syria is a mistake which will very likely lead to war. There is no harm in talking, if you don't like what you hear, then you don't have to make any concessions or otherwise establish good relations. At least you have the dialogue to prevent misunderstandings from spiraling into conflict.

32. She most certainly did not step out of bounds. She did good. She did real good. It feels like we may we waking up from this long national nightmare. Diplomacy. Leadership. So long long gone.
Speaker Pelosi, Thank you. You are light in darkness. Keep doing what you're doing. We got your back.

33. Pelosi has every right to visit Syria and find out first hand what is going on there, rather than having to get second and third hand information from U.S. administration staff who cannot or will not gather first hand information themselves. She is an admirable leader in this regard, compared to those who refuse to talk with and try to understand leaders of countries that they don't like.

34. Nancy Pelosi's trip is only about Nancy Pelosi and nothing else. She is an arrogant, dangerous person in a dangerous place. The Middle East, in particular Syria and Iraq have centuries old rivalries. The Syrian Alawite regime regarded Iraq as its second most important regional enemy after Israel. Syria wants Lebanon and Israel to be a part of "Greater Syria", Scholars and Think Tanks continue to "think us to death" about this the most volatile area on earth. It's laughable to suggest that this mess can be resolved by a woman out of her lane. She has allowed the terrorists to use her for their propaganda and embarrassed our country. She need to jump off her pedestal and go RUNNING back to San Francisco. How to you "talk" to Islamic terrorists? These people have such millennial thoughts, they believe their own suicides, and using any kind of weapon and all degrees of destruction is their only hope under extreme Islam. They know no borders and their own destruction is exaulted. It does not bother them that they used our Speaker of the House to further their murderous agendas. It DOES bother ME.

35. "DAMACUS NANCY" was not authorized by any member of our government to negotiate with any foreign officials. PERIOD!

36. Horrors! Some woman named Pelosi went over and talked to somebody.
Meanwhile, back in history, cynical republican greedpigs took a little time out from supporting mass murder in Central America to support a mass murderer in the Middle East and supply him with chemical weapons. Fast forward to 2007. Now those same cynical greedpigs have overthrown the mass murderer, generating a maelstrom of death, maiming and chaos in order to deplete the U.S. military arsenal so as to forestall the otherwise obvious call to slash the grotesquely corrupt and bloated military budget, among other things... Etc. Etc.
Horrors! Horrors! Some woman went over and talked to somebody

I notice a lot of interest here in the Logan Act. In a 1997 visit to Columbia Dennis Hastert encouraged the Columbian government to negotiate with him and to ignore the President. Did that constitute a violation of the Logan Act ? Pelosi hasn't said or done anything remotely close to what Hastert did but she's guilty as sin according to all the legal experts here. Amazing.
Also amazing is the fact that we presently have full diplomatic relations with Syria who by the was our ally in Gulf War 1. They also presently are hosts to over 1 million of the over 4 million Iraqi refugees that have been created as a result of this war. Would everyone like the opportunity to have all of those Iraqi refugees relocate here in order to avoid the sphere of evil influence of the Syrians ? After all, we support the Iraqi people and all that is required for victory - don't we ? This problem is just another overlooked little detail of this war that was so expertly conceived, planned, and carried out by this administration. If you don't think the refugee situation is serious you might want to look closely at what has happened to the Palestinian people since 1948. It's not good. Not since the Palestinian situation have so many refugees been created until now - but little mention has been made of this fact. Then again facts often aren't a major concern or priority of this administration. No matter what happens and the end result is it won't be the responsibility of the people in charge - our deciders in the current administration. It will be someone elses fault - it always is.

38. If the mideasterners like her so much, why did they let her come back. We can live without her. Or, why did she decide to come back, to torment everyone here?

39. When I look at the face of Nancy Pelosi with that scarf, I want to slap that smirk off of her stupid face....here is an example of a brain-dead Liberal from San Francisco.....a warped city in America where anything goes and religion is a memory.....

43. How come it's ok for Republicans to visit Syria, but not Nancy Pelosi? I guess they want us to think that syria is only a terrorist country if a DEMOCRAT visits. Talk about double standards. Sheesh.

44. You would think that at a time that this country and most of the Western world is celebrating Easter, there would be an opportunity for pause and reflection on how "hot spots' around the world can be handled more peacefully.
Nancy, I would think, has her concept of the America she envisions as a leader-- she believes, apparently that diplomacy is a strategy that has a place in resolving problems. Consequently, she makes an attempt to give it a try-- by talking to the enemy. This action does not disrupt/prevent trying other means to deal with rouge states, please let us give 'peace a chance'.

That's because you are a bigot. I see respect for religion and their culture. And when I saw George W. Bush wearing a yarmulke, I saw the same respect for religion and culture. No doubt you wanted to slap him too, didn't you? Doesn't matter. Do or don't, you are either a bigot or a partisan sheep. I don't have much use for you either way. Have a nice day.
