A "right-wing" hit job minus the right wing

Cenk Uygur calls the story about John Edwards' $400 haircut a "right-wing hit job." However, he neglects to supply any evidence that the "right-wing" is responsible for the appearance of the story, much less its resonance with late night comedians and, indeed, anyone who likes a laugh. The work on this particular story appears to have been performed by AP, hardly part of any "right-wing conspiracy." AP based the story on documents filed by the Edwards campaign with the Federal Elections Commission, and confirmed the facts by interviewing the Beverly Hills stylist who gives Edwards the expensive cuts. AP then contacted the Edwards campaign which declined to comment.

Nor is Uygur's attack on the AP story very convincing. He's forced to acknowleged that the $400 haircut "appears to be true." He objects to the reference to the $225 of services Edwards received from the Pink Sapphire boutique in New Hampshire, noting that this money was spent on make-up for two TV appearances. But the article makes it quite clear that this was the case, and that the services he received were not exotic (no facials or cucumber peels on his eyes). In other words, the reporting was fair, leaving readers (and comedians) to make what they will of make-up jobs that expensive (most TV studios can perform wonders in five minutes).

Finally, Uygur forgets to mention that the centerpiece of Edwards' campaigns has been his "two-America" theme. Any candidate who focuses his pitch on how well the rich have it and how hard everyone else must struggle to get by can expect ridicule if he decides to pay ridiculous prices for basic grooming services.

We may or may not be two Americans, but with a few exceptions we have one sense of humor.
