A commentator has a beef with the contestants on 'American Idol' -- they're obese, and that may hurt the kids of American.
The observation that some of the contestants were over weight on is not absurd: some obviously were. But, is her alarm, well, alarmist? Or does she have a point?

31. American Idol is supposed to be a singing talent contest, however, it also should be looking at the total package (talent, personality, charisma, intelligence, and overall looks). Unfortunately, that is the way the public will ultimately look at whomever chosen and is why many do not make it in the end. Being overweight is an issue from both an overall health perspective but also from the "eye candy" side of it for both men and women. I am being pragmatic about this and wish Jordan much success because she has tremendous potential and is so mature for her age. She is only 17 and her weight issue is something that she can deal with in time and, in her case, may be easier then say, Lakisha who has a more difficult problem. It is just one of the variables that come into play when we are contemplating success in "show business"!!!

32. Actually, SHE can put on a few pounds.

33. A person's weight is not a character trait. If this is a talent show/search, how is this commentator's "observation" aka condemnation, relevant?
It isn't?

34. I wouldn't listen to a skinny, anorexic , unattractive commentator proporting to be the expert on what is attractive in a human being. There are a lot of us who think too thin is very unattractive and unhealthy looking. I think she is way off base and is speaking from ignorance. Jordin is a very beautiful young woman with an enormous talent - AMEN!!!!!
pat at 1:20AM on May 26th 2007
35. It sure sounds like the woman that made those comments is looking to live in a perfect world. She should have said we should all be 5'7 and weigh 125 pounds......NOT! Take the time to make a thought provoking statement that would better the human race instead of wasting your breath.
Stanley at 10:16AM on May 25th 2007
36. This whole discussion just makes me furious. The woman doing the speaking should be asked to shut her mouth. Jordan is an absolutely beautiful girl. and SHE was there singing her heart out. I guess you were too busy making lists of how to put others down.. that may be your only talent!!! It is a shame that shallow minded so called member of the human race has nothing better to do than to belittle other people. Not everyone can be skinny and perfect as you so obviously think you are!! as my momma always says.. i'd like to buy you for what your worth and sell you for what you think YOU are worth. Its this kind of stupid mentality that causes it to be harder on younger kids with issues of their own bodies. If she is comfortable and happy?? isn't that all its supposed to be about?? If you can't make yourself feel good about yourself any other way than to belittle others than you are the one to be felt truly sorry for.!!! YOU my dear are the one that makes me sick

37. BY accident I was flipping through the channels on my tv and that lame show called American Idols came on and it looked like a stage full of hungry hungry hippos!!! I was like not only do they sing horrible music(bad taste) but it seems to be a requirment to be a blubber butt to win.

38. This lady is sick. She's not even pretty herself. She lack confidence pulling people down. She's probably an old maid.
ray at 10:33AM on May 25th 2007
39. This is one of the most ridiculous things I've heard. Somebody tell this idiot that I would MUCH rather have my 9 yr old daughter watch a big beautiful TALENTED woman pursue her dream through hard work and dedication than to watch someone like Paris Hilton who works for nothing and gets everything because she's anorexically thin. I have a rather large vocabulary, but only 2 words come to mind for this journalist... Shut Up......
Anna at 10:33AM on May 25th 2007
40. This commentator has all the charm and reason of another well-known idiot, Skeletor impersonator Ann-the-Man Coulter. She even appears to be trying to look like her. How unfortunate.
Jordin looks perfectly fine. People like this blond witch (and no. 2 -- how appropriate -- Warren) she pull their heads out of their lower intestinal tracts and be less judgmental. God help their offspring, if they turn out to be less than mommy or daddy's ideal....
Chuck at 10:34AM on May 25th 2007
41. I guess the commentator has a thing for scrawny, sickly, anexoric, bullemic people and thinks that's the way to go. Bullcrap!!
Yes, there are people who are seriously and unhealthily overweight only because of their eating habits, and then there are those who no matter what they do cannot lose weight because of metabolism or medical conditions. My 79 y/o Mom is one of the latter. I've seen her struggle and nearly starve herself just trying to maintain her weight. Nothing worked and she was one of the most miserable people, not to mention some of the diets she tried created other health issues. Now that she's accepted that she'll never be even a size 14 again, she eats healthier and is a happier person.
Everybody has their own set metabolism and body type. Jordin is a beautiful young lady. Leave her and the other contestants be.

42. wait hold on, literate people still look at FOX news, ha, and you wonder why this is a news topic.
alafura at 10:41AM on May 25th 2007
43. You know, this woman has no idea what she is talking about. Why is she even on the air? What moron promoted her comments? The mindset that she has is why there are so many young women and men have eating disorders and drug problems. Since the beginning of television, all actors had to be so skinny in order to even be recognized as a film star. I think Jordin and all of the others who are HEALTHY are just fine. As long as they are not falling over from high blood pressure or a heart attack, they are ok in my book. Now as for the skinny blond, she needs to take her butt somewhere and sit down and keep her uninvited comments to herself. I am a little plump myself and I get flirted with everyday, so size isn't the only thing that matters for a person to be recognized as beautiful. Hey blondie, remember, a great personality and a beautiful smile is all it takes to be considered beautiful, so get yourself a life and stop trying to push your opinions about size on others.
Deborah Fernandez at 11:02AM on May 25th 2007
44. What?!? Really?!? Those comments are insane and hurtful to many in our nation, both those battling with weight and those that are blatantly "weightist." You know the type - "He'd be handsome if he'd only lose weight." Weightists are to weight as racists are to race. There ain't a difference, folks. And this bitch is weightist.
C'mon, America - let's get over this labeling crap. If someone is in a singing contest, they should win for their singing. If they're in a dance competition, they should win for their dancing. And if they're on Jeopardy, they should win for their brains. NEVER should their skin color, size, who they sleep with or who they worship EVER be a part of the decision. And those that think I'm wrong - wake up. It's 2007. "Liberty and justice for all" is still a goal for many of us.
Beth at 10:54AM on May 25th 2007
45. Jordin is very secure in her own skin...should we all be. She is tall and larger than most bone trotting teenagers and yet, she is the American Idol because she has much more to offer than a tight little ass. American Idol is not "Fashion Week" in NYC, it's about the best singer, not the best bod. For that we have beauty pagents and fashion models.
