A commentator has a beef with the contestants on 'American Idol' -- they're obese, and that may hurt the kids of American.
The observation that some of the contestants were over weight on is not absurd: some obviously were. But, is her alarm, well, alarmist? Or does she have a point?

436. I believe only allowing skinny to super skinny people become Idols in this country sends a wrong message. When we glorified the skinny and wish that we can fit a size zero only adds to the obesity rate with our young children. Many of our kids can't achieve such a figure and being that skinny is also a sign of health issues as well. Personally, telling our kids that being skinny and a good singer is the only way to be a famous person is grossly misguided. Too many of our kids use harsh methods to push themselves for not meeting someones ideology of being beautiful. Look at Lindsay Lohan, for example, the girl had a nice curves. Now, she boy is like a young boy and possible has other issues as well. We need to preach diversity instead of reinforcing a cookie cutter body image idea. Telling our kids, if your are not skinny then you are ugly is false image which leads to additional psychological problems (i.e. alcohol, drugs, eating disorder to name a few) Personally, I thought the Idol contestant looked beautiful and had great hair.

437. Jordin certainly doesn't look fat to me, but she's not skinny. She has curves, and looks fantastic. But I agree with Meme Roth that she will end up losing weight, not because she particularly needs to, but because the pressures of the music business and the entertainment industry will force her hand, because beauty=thinness in Hollywood. Look at Jennifer Hudson-all of a sudden she's miss skinny. Her curves are g-o-n-e. I am not saying it's right-but it's a fact that when people win Idol, they are given instant makeovers-Kelly Clarkson and Clay Aiken are cases in point.

438. It's obvious obesity is a big problem in this country. It's not only unattractive- it kills. Let's cut out the "big is beautiful" crap.

439. Jordin is beautiful and talented! There is a weight problem in America, but she is not one of them. She is a large girl, not a fat girl. There is a difference. These attitudes towards women are why
eating disorders are rampant. Not everyone is a size zero!

440. Jordan is not overweight. She is a big-boned woman, but beautiful. The problem is that most woman nowadays are underweight in America, because celebrities are the children's role-models and idols and most appear to be bulimic, anorexic, or on the verge of death from starvation. That is the wrong example. I would rather have a daughter that looked like Jordan than one that looked like Paris Hilton, Nicole Richey, the Olsen twins, Christina Aguilera, and the list goes on. All those just mentioned look pale and sickly...Jordan looks healthy and that is what we neeed to portray to our children. This woman is just adding to the problem that young girls have in America today...to be waif-like skinny. She needs to let the girls be girls, let the women be women, let people LIVE their lives, and move on with hers. In all honbesty, after viewing the above video, I thought the woman making the comment could use a few extra pounds.

441. Although I agree that Jordin is quite beautiful and her curves are normal for her body, America in general has a serious weight problem. There is a difference between being healthy and fit for your size and being unhealthily obese (Rueben?) and here were as many obese auditioners as there were anorexic ones. In America kids and adults both are becoming heavier and more unhealthy each year, but at the same time others are starving themselves and jeopardizing their future health. When will America wake up and see that we are focusing too much on both extremes and need to relearn what makes a healthy body?

442. If American Idol is a singing competition, why don't they just do it on the radio?
