Half Hour News Hour - I Don't Get It

I don't have a television but from what I understand, Fox News Channel is a "Cable News Network." They report and broadcast current events, delivered and presented by credential-laced journalists. FNC is recognized in the mainstream as a legitimate news network. I also am not wrong by saying it's plugged in everywhere: banks, airports, restaurants etc. It's part the current American culture.

I think most cable news programming is silly. Out of all of them, I have stumbled into far more zany FNC clips online. But, the market has spoken: FNC gets big ratings.

I find it bizarre, though, that the same news station that relays critical information to large portions of the American population, would air such a blatant display of bias. Before you jump on me, hear me out. The 1/2 News Hour was created to be a conservative version of the Daily Show. And thus they already admit they are bias. The kicker is, and please take a moment and think about this, TDS is on the"Comedy Network"... FNC is a "News Network," can you see how this begins to appear odd?

The attempts at humor aren't helped by an intrusive laughter track and the presence of a real news ticker at the bottom of the screen. Fox News is, after all, a news channel
Flip on FNC at the wrong time and you might catch a segment of the 1/2 News Hour and you may start to take the comedy show as real news. I watched one clip and I got angry at pregnant women. In another I laughed at the thought of forcing people to convert religions? I didn't really, but the only point I have is that News Channels broadcasting this type of "comedy" just doesn't seem right?

Anyway, here is the clip that popped up in my RSS that inspired this post. I thought Sean Hannity was a news man, not a comedian. Here is his sketch of conservative American comedy, the topic, Michael Moore's new film Sicko. Let's observe.

So that was thrilling. Oprah is screwing with me again: she told me this was a great film. Oh, right, this was comedy, sorry. American conservative comedy can be so convincing sometimes. I enjoy learning about foreign cultures, so I will try to understand this comedy sketch, let me try to decipher those jokes...

  • Although virtually every other review about this movie has been positive, Hannity might be trying to be funny by only showing a negative side to the story.
  • Even the ticker is funny - War, NASCAR, War, NASCAR, (don't stare the ticker is hypnotizing).
  • Maybe parodying car commercials, this sketch shows that American Health Care is better then Canada, France and UK, by splashing a bunch of well rounded numbers on the screen. I chuckled a little because none of those numbers were associated with sources.
  • Although the documentary states that America is rated 37th in the world, Hannity insists multiple times that America is #1. Is that a "propaganda Catapult" joke?
  • Big topic, not time for map
  • TDS by far has a better graphics department, during this comedy sketch FNC went with the bobble head graphic accompanied with a "boing" sound effect. Although the graphic was lame... the sound effect... "boing", I associate that sound with humour, like when Foghorn leghorn steps on a spring. "Boing" is comedy language everybody can understand.
So I can see the jokes, but I just don't find it funny, maybe I'm just not old enough yet to understand conservative comedy?

Finally, after hours of deep thinking, I think I figured out the joke, Hannity says that Moore is "Just plain sick" for using 9/11 rescue workers in his film. I don't want to spoil the movie but I can tell Hannity is reviewing a movie he hasn't seen yet! That's the joke!

Yup, Half Hour News Hour (heh), Comedy for sure, simply put it's not my preferred style of comedy, but I am glad conservatives are finding something to laugh about, to each their own. eh
