The most provocative comment came from "Tina," who wrote:
"I wonder what Jesus' toe nails looked like. But anyway, all you men out there , if you want to get laid get well groomed! Put your best foot forward, not your turkey claws. Get a pedicure!"
Here is what I wrote in response:
"Jesus' toenails is a subject fairly unexplored until now. (A quick google search on "Jesus' toenails" yielded little - mainly questions about the appropriateness of coloring the toenails of the baby Jesus in your creche.) The Jesus in the church I grew up in had unremarkable toenails, largely because he was fairly tan, the lighting was dim, and small features like toenails just blended in.
If anyone was familiar with Jesus' toenails, it was likely Mary Magdalene. She did after all wash his feet. The Gospels tell us little more than that. Did Mary Magdalene bring along a nail care set and give his feet a quick trim? Perhaps. (I'm not well versed in the Apocryphal books which could very well offer clues.)
It's perfectly plausible that Mary Magdalene would offer these services. Once she stopped hooking for a living, she needed to make a decent living somehow. Simply washing feet offered little remuneration.
By the way, am I the only one that thinks "Jesus' Toenails" sounds like Carrie Underwood's next hit song?"
I expected that to be the end of it. But then came this comment from "Kaycie":
"Okay, Mo, check your facts. Mary Magdalene was not a hooker. Bet her feet were pretty, though."
Strange, I thought. Of course Mary Magdalene was a hooker. But then came this comment from Denise:
"BTW, Mary M, was NOT a hooker! You really shouldn't bring religion into a conversation open to every religion. Its offending to me that you woudn't get the facts about a Biblical Character before you comment like that. With all of the recent studies and programs revolving around the relationship between Jesus and Mary M, I find it disheartening people still think that of her.
Thanks for reading my comment."
I'm sorry, Denise, but in my house we were taught that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute before she met Jesus and repented. But perhaps we were misinformed.
So what's the truth here?

2. Oh boy! First comment! Well, based on what I learned in the three religion classes I took in college (don't tell anyone - I'm supposed to be the family heathen), there wasn't any evidence to support she was a prostitute, but she did have an affair with a married man, if memory serves me right.
In any event, it doesn't matter that much. She was a flawed human being, capable of making mistakes and being redeemed through her faith.
You know what's more interesting? The law that prohibits Catholic priests from marrying doesn't come from God or anything in the Bible. It was created by the higher-ups (can't say for sure if the Pope authorized it himself) because priests would give their lands and possessions to their wives and children upon death. The Church was losing out, so the law was changed.

3. That's what I was taught too. But it's not really true.
There is nothing in the bible that says Mary Magdalene was a hooker, or and an adulteress, but there is an identification with Mary of Bethany and the "woman sinner" (And, behold, a woman in the city, which was a sinner, when she knew that Jesus sat at meat in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster box of ointment, and stood at his feet behind him weeping, and began to wash his feet with tears, and did wipe them with the hairs of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. - Luke 7:36-50).
No, not Christian here. Raised as Catholic, but I'm not anymore. I have to admit the Bible had a good impact on me, but then again, maybe it's because I read the "Comic book version for children".

4. I was taught that she merely committed adultery, not prostitution, as well. But prostitution makes it much more interesting. Gives something to the saying that he ate with tax collectors and prostitutes.

5. Mo, can you read, get a Book, it's called the BIBLE.

6. Pope Gregory the Great connected Mary Magdalene with the unnamed prostitue from Luke 7 partially because Mary Magdalene appears in Luke 8 and, scholars suspect, partly to discredit her and detract from her importance and status as one of Jesus' closest followers.
Mary Magdalene is described as a sinner from which Jesus cast seven demons. Her particular sins are never explicitly mentioned in the text of the Bible.

7. Mo, can you read??? well there is a book called the Bible, the answer is there.
Can you talk about something different, other then Religion?
Like - let's not support these crazy young so called Actresses. They suck, and give a bad example to the young kids. Stop buying their crap, music, magazines, clothes. See where they will be when finally nobody cares. Where, THE "SLAMMER" where they belong.

8. The important thing is not what she was but what she
became when she met Jesus - a sinner saved by grace.
This is what matters for all of us.

9. I guess she helped Jesus, because if he was single and had to whack it, he would have been blind himself and that wouldn't be too good on the resume as the guy who made the blind see; who went blind himself due to not having a groupie around. I personally think Mary was the first groupie. I mean, of course she wasn't a hooker when she was with Jesus, wasn't he poor? Judas had it wrong, he should have just bought Mary out and made Jesus do his evil bidding. But I guess then the Bible would have sharks with laser beams or something more bizarre than some homeless guy who walks on water and a bunch of things that do not apply to modern day science.

11. Mary Magdelene was Jesus' wife, so I guess she probably would be his closest follower........
And, His tan goes to the fact that he was Jewish & dark skinned, not white or peach.

13. I heard that some early Pope declared her a prostitute because he didn't like it that as a woman, she was held in such high regard among Jesus' followers. He had to bring her down because she was a woman. Sounds more like the truth to me.

14. the answer to this doesn't really matter for ALL have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and all sins are punishable by death, bu by the grace of God sending his son to die, we shall have everlasting life. BUT the real question is:
"Is Mo a Prostitute?!?!"
darrell at 10:44AM on Jul 3rd 2007
15. The fact is, no one really knows much about anyone who lived back then. You find disagreement everywhere and many different versions of the same story. I guess the idea is that she was some sort of an undesirable person (though that could've meant just about anything back then) and she had obviously done something the people felt was deserving of a death by stoning. Could've been adultery, could've been prostitution, etc... Interesting that a spouse of hers is never mentioned though, if in fact it was adultery. Someone mentioned earlier that she was Jesus' wife later on. We don't know that to be a fact yet either, though some growing evidence seems to suggest that. This would make one wonder what became of her first husband that she was able to marry Jesus, given the laws of the time and the fact that I don't believe someone like Jesus Christ would steal the wife of another man, unless maybe he was dead. Also, I doubt she would've been accepted among his disciples if they felt she was continuing to live a "life of sin". Therefore, I tend to lean towards prostitution. Truth is, only someone who lived among them would ever know the truth. Way too long ago...
