What makes this even more disturbing is how he concludes his little segment, the eerie way he says "We neeeeeeed another nine-eleven." I am sorry, that's really, really, fantastically offensive. Olbermann caught this and mentioned it on air as well.
I for one think what Jon Stewart said in response to 9/11 was appropriate and from the heart considering the climate of the time, I also hope it's the ONLY time he ever has to speak like that.
Why would anybody debate the need for acts of mass murder?

32. #16 Genericus. I guess the irony that you're failing to see is that following Stewart's 9/11 sob-fest, he went on for the next six years spoofing, ridiculing, humiliating Bush who is the only president this century who has dealt effectively with terrorists domestically and abroad, ending attacks on our embassies and civilians here and overseas. Ok, time to wake up..nappie-time is over..

33. JON STEWART PROBABLY HAD IT COMING. HIS SELF DESRIBED SATIRE IS SOMETIMES OVER THE LINE. MAYBE IF JOHN HOARD EVER GETS EVEN REMOTELY FAMOUS (WHICH I DOUBT VERY MUCH), HIS NAME WILL BE MENTIONED ON NATIONAL TV? UNTIL THEN, HE'LL HAVE TO REMAIN IN THE BLOGOSPHERE WORLD. I GUESS WHEN YOU'RE THE #1 NETWORK IN AMERICA, FOX HAS TO TAKE POTSHOTS EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FROM THE OTHER NEWS PEASANTS?

34. April: once again have you watched the clip?? does John Gibson not wish for another 9/11.. read between the lines... that would mean several thousand more American lives would be lost. And this has nothing to do with Iraq so don't change the subject. Would it kill you to stay on one subject???
And lizard... I don't know if you actually watch the Daily Show, but Jon Stewart spends a fair amount of time humiliating (if catching a politician making contradictory statements is humiliating) Democratic candidates as well. He kinda focuses on the corrupt, hypocritical politicians... making Bush a pretty good target

36. Does anyone understand that by Jon's own admission he is only a comedian???????? Why would anyone (The Fox guy or Jeff or these commentors) refer to him as anything else??

Are you one of those Canadians that stood up with your president on 9/11 and shouted to the world that America deserved 9/11 because we are an arrogant nation?
Most Canadains jumped with joy on 9/11 along with that sick Canadian president.
9/11 is an American issue, much like clubing harp seal pups to death is a Canadian thing.
willet at 3:21PM on Aug 16th 2007
38. Dear Willet.
Canada does not have a "President" - we have a "Prime Minister."
Our PM did not "Jump for Joy" - He stood shoulder to shoulder with Bush and joined the fight in Afghanistan, no questions asked. In fact Canada is still fighting in Afghanistan.

39. You know why FOX aggravates liberals? Because the other 10 left wing news outlets actually have a competitor. Boy, it is amazing how liberals hate it when conservatives express ideas.
One thing you will notice, conservatives express ideas about policy and issues. Liberals simply hide behind personal attacks and hate speach. Face it libs, socialism failed.
d at 3:43PM on Aug 16th 2007
40. Hey libs, why are you so angry all the time. You can still watch CBS, NBC, ABC, PBS, CNN, MSNBC for your daily dose of liberal propanda.
FYI- Socialism failed. Peace activist kill by allowing evil to rise to power.

41. Yo, wing-nut posters!
How come none of you are addressing the FACT that one of your talking-heads on your favorite propaganda channel thinks OUR country NEEDS ANOTHER TERRORIST ATTACK ON OUR SOIL?!?
What do you mental giants have to say about THE REAL ISSUE HERE?

42. It would have been truly moving if people had been united in denouncing Gibson for his vile remarks, rather than seeing distorted justifications to defend his utterly indefensible comments. After the tragic events of 9/11 happened, Jon Stewart felt compelled to speak about it, to his audience and to himself. He gave an utterly honest, thoughtful, and absolutely deep speech about it, with tears visibly brimming in his eyes. Anyone who watched the clip could not help but be moved, unless they themselves lack any shred of human decency. This is the man that John Gibson attacked and mocked, while impugning him as an American, while simultaneously wishing for thousands of Americans to die so we would all be in lock-step with Bush.
Jon Stewart is an incredible man, and in many ways a hero. Yes, he is a comedian. But he is also a man of stunning intelligence, anyone who watches his show can look into his eyes and see the fierce intelligence and conviction there, or to hear in his voice the compassion and knowledge he has. The guests on his show, regardless of their political leanings, are always treated with courtesy and respect, be they John Kerry or John McCain, an actor or an author, an astrophysicist or the president of Pakistan. They are always greeted warmly, and when, as often is the case, they have recently written a book, Jon is both insightful and thoughtful about it. The genuine respect that he shows the people who come to his show, that he shows to his audience members, and that he shows to all of us, is simply astounding in todays world. Jon Stewart is a man who truly cares, about people, about his country, and about the world he lives in, and visibly strives to make it a better place. This is the man that John Gibson attacked and mocked, while impugning him as an American, while simultaneously wishing for thousands of Americans to die so we would all be in lock-step with Bush.
A while back, Jon Stewart hosted Comedy Central's "The Night of Too Many Stars," a benefit for autism education. Jon was a gracious and funny host, and brought together a great cast, for a great benefit. The show raised a lot of money, and Jon gave generously from his own pocket, $50,000. His friend and associate, Stephen Colbert was also there, and also gave generously. This is just one of many instances where Jon has given his time and money to try to help others, and to make the world a better place. Was John Gibson there? No, he was probably writing a book about how liberals, like the Grinch before them, are out to steal Christmas. Jon is a husband and father. The college he went to has an award that is given out in his honor every year, to the member of the men's soccer team who grows the most and gives the rest of the team the most laughs. This is the man that John Gibson attacked and mocked, while impugning him as an American, while simultaneously wishing for thousands of Americans to die so we would all be in lock-step with Bush.
Jon Stewart has been in popular movies, has published a top-selling book, is a successful comedian, actor, producer, and news anchor. He has won 2 Peabody Awards for his work on the Daily Show, was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in 2005, Entertainer of the Year by Entertainment Weekly in 2004, and the received the George Orwell Award for Distinguished Contribution to Honesty and Clarity in Public Language in 2005. Jon also was the keynote speaker and Princeton University in 2004, and also received an honorary Doctor of Arts from his alma mater. He also received an honorary award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, as he is an avid soccer fan and former coach. He hosted the Grammy's twice and the Academy Awards once. This is the man that John Gibson attacked and mocked, while impugning him as an American, while simultaneously wishing for thousands of Americans to die so we would all be in lock-step with Bush.
Jon Stewart continues to host The Daily Show, with his typical intelligent, passionate, good natured approach. Jon continues to give his best for his viewers and his country, exposing the foibles, faults, and falsehoods of political figures of every creed and party, with mock-horror and an ever-ready laugh. Jon does not sink to using vitriolic, partisan, ad hominem style attacks on those he disagrees with, but rather showcases their mistakes or hypocrisies through their own words and actions, with never a sign of bitterness, only vigilance and good cheer. When the guest on his show is political, he engages in respectful, intellectual, serious discussions about the issues of the time in his characteristically humorous ways. More than that, in watching him on The Daily Show, there is a genuine sense of joy and earnestness in what he does, a deep passion and conviction for the work he loves. This is the man that John Gibson attacked and mocked, while impugning him as an American, while simultaneously wishing for thousands of Americans to die so we would all be in lock-step with Bush.
John Gibson is none of these things. John Gibson is not intelligent or passionate, he is not respectful or respected, he is not honored or honorable, he is not compassionate or humane, he is not genuine or earnest. John Gibson is filled not with joy and good humor, but bitterness and mockery. John Gibson is not successful or famous, well-informed or well-read. John Gibson hates and fears Jon Stewart because Jon is everything that he is not. When he looks at Jon Stewart, he sees a far greater man than he could ever be. John Gibson attacked and mocked Jon Stewart not out of outrage, but fear; not out of contempt, but jealousy. John Gibson knows what a small, grasping man he is, so he seeks to drag Jon Stewart down to his level, to try to diminish that which he could never reach. John Gibson wants to grow in infamy, to gain through offensiveness and shock what he could never gain through talent or honesty, with snide, barbaric attacks on a far greater man's pain and love, bravely and honestly shown to the world. John Gibson seeks the jeers and the catcalls of those who see the world through the same eyes of hate and bitterness as he himself does, at the expense of a man strong enough to show his tears to the world, to bare his heart and soul to us after those catastrophic events. Let us not give him what he wants, to waste our time thinking about him, to sink to his level, to allow him to bask in our anger and revulsion, to give him the shock and attention he wants, to give him the infamy and hatred he so richly deserves, and seeks. Let us instead use this opportunity to give our thanks and respect to the man worthy of both.
To my hero, Jon Stewart. A man of great intelligence, compassion, and humor. Thank you
Eric

43. OK, even from this short clip, it's obvious that Gibson doesn't say "We need another 9/11", but asks the rhetorical question "Do we need another 9/11?". Admittedly, the beginning of his statement is somewhat garbled, but listen to it carefully and interpret it in the context of the entire conversation. Disagree with Gibson's point, if you like, but you have to be remarkably obtuse or intellectually dishonest to claim he's advocating another attack against the US.
cmw at 6:48PM on Aug 16th 2007
44. A delusional "cmw" listens to a Christo/fascist spokes-model saying "we" (presuming he still qualifies as an American) "NEED" another 9/11-style attack on America.
And from this "cmw" concludes that anyone who can't interpret the words is "obtuse or intellectually dishonest.
We can see who the obtuse one is.
"CMW," wake the hell up!

45. Randy, Randy, Randy,
Calm down, my friend. What's a "Christo/fascist", anyway? Take off the blinders. I have no problem with people having a variety of opinions, but I do have a problem with ad hominem attacks and taking quotes out of context in order to avoid serious debate. I am not a fan of John Gibson; I generally find his style to caustic, and I don't agree with his "attack" (if you can call it such) on Jon Stewart, who is, after all, a comedian and political satirist and, as such, can be expected to go after the "powers that be". However, it's clear from the context of this segment that he is not advocating or hoping for another "9/11-style" attack on the US. I say again: to state otherwise, you're either being remarkably obtuse or intellectually dishonest.
So, which are you?
