Miss Teen South Carolina had enough abuse heaped on her after her performance in the pageant (in the infamous map question). But then she went on the Today show and I'm not sure that made the situation any better. First of all, they were completely patronizing to her. Second of all, I'm not sure she convinced anybody that the map answer in the pageant was a fluke. You can watch the interview below and see if you have a heightened opinion of her intellect:
Since we first ran this video, we've taken some criticism for being too mean to her. I said she is "not very bright." You know it, you know it, the American people know it, but is it wrong to say it on camera? Are we too mean to her?
So, that brings us to our question of the day:

16. Who says says you have to be smart to win a beauty pageant? And tell me, is it just me or does anyone else feel that the tone of her voice and attitude sounds like a rich spoiled brat. Ya know, those teenagers whose mommy buys them a Prada bag? lol

17. Thank you #12, lin, for speaking an opinion as close to a non-judgemental one as possible.
And shame on everyone who judges this young woman on the basis of a two minute television clip.

19. My 19 year old son is sleeping in an airport tonight...his flight was delayed. He's returning to college, his second year. My daughter will graduate with her BA degree this year, she just turned 21. They're both in honor's programs and have full academic scholarships. And, they are beautiful. It seemed more important for me to focus on what was important to them as kids, and it wasn't pageantry. But, that's them. I bet that Miss SC could have waxed eloquently about something that interested her. I think when she heard the question, it did go right out of her head. I don't think she is very interested in education, maps, or the Iraq. She said in the interview that she liked graphic design...maybe she could talk about that, who knows? I only saw her answer, and by comparison to the other contestants, she might not have been all that "dumb."

20. Another hard hitting news opinion story from The Young Turks. Way to go, guys. This is a real departure from stories about people like Brittany and Paris.
Why where there 3 Young Turks but there have only been 2 for a long time?

21. Just in case you're wondering, or not, my son made it to NY. Prior to his departure, we did do a run through of proper men's room etiquette, just in case. His plan was probably better than mine, which was "avoid eye contact" and went something like this: (1) he would use the handicapped stall, which is wider, to avoid "wide stance Craig" types (only if handicapped stalls were plentiful, of course; (2) if someone began the foot tapping, he would say in a loud voice, "is that you, Senator Craig? Is it supposed to burn when I pee?", and (3) wash his hands with soap and dry them on his jeans to save trees.

22. BOY,I THINK WE HEARD EVERYTHING ON THIS FROM A BUNCH OF SMUG SELF SATISFIED CREEPS. THE GIRL IS A DUMB BLOND,A PAGEANT PERSON, SOUTHERN AND JUST PLAIN DUMB IN THEIR OPINION. MORE LIKELY SHE IS JUST YOUNG AND GOT NERVOUS. AND I WANTED TO ADD A SPECIAL NOTE FOR #19, YOU GOT LUCKY, YOUR KIDS ARE SMART AND YOU DIDN'T HAVE TWO NICKELS TO RUB TOGETHER(OR YOU HID IT AND CRIED POORMOUTH)SO THEY GOT SCHOLARSHIPS. THIS GIRL DIDN'T HAVE THE SAME OPPORTUNITY.

23. #22--special note, back atcha.
I was very blessed or lucky with all my children. They all received full academic scholarships based on test scores, academic achievement, extra-curricular activities, and interviews. Their scholarships were not income-based...that's kinda the definition of academic scholarships. For southern kids, they did pretty well competing against kids from all over the country. Stereotypes are demeaning, whether, dumb blonde, or stupid southern. Miss Teen SC just happened to stumble into to very prominent ones...and reinforced them.

24. It's not a big deal that a young girl gave a wrong answer. What really amused is the ANSWER itself.
The answer represented an attitude that largely among losers, it says: if we done something un-right, somebody-else' to blame.
Chinese had been doing this for the past 2,000 years.
You also can find examples among Americans easily, like G.W.Bush and his supporters.

25. Just listen to her answer repeatedly/carefully,you can almost certain that she has special feelings
towards those groups,Asians,Iraqis,South Africans.
"I personally believe",Asians,most speak poor English-(ret^rd),grab American'jobs,threat American'economy-(b^st^rd).
"I personally believe",Iraqis,most're Muslin-(terrorists),refuse to be liberated,killing U.S'troops whom brought them freedom-(such low-lives).
"I personally believe",South Africans=blacks=n1ggers,
"I personally believe",we Americans ought to help others,"such as" Iraqis,Asians,South Africans,in order to find our own country on world map.
Wait a minute, why would anyone do such a none-sense,we American own this world.
GOD blew(e)s American!

26. This girl was under alot of pressure. I am sure she was quite nervous and sometimes that can get the better of people. Her answer came out sounding ridiculus, yes, but so does much of what the great president of our nation says. Give her a break, don't judge her based on this single event. It has nothing to do with her looks, the fact that she is from the south, or even her education. No one is dumb enough to think that that is a coherant answer. Call it what it is: A young girl who got nervous, said the wrong thing, and continued to speak as she was trying to tie it all together. It didn't work, but it does not make her stupid or dumb. She just made a mistake. Leave her alone, pick on the leader of our country who messes up just as bad every time he opens his mouth.

27. What's missing in all this is the fact that Caitlin should simply have asked for the question to be repeated. Instead, she tried to wing an answer. It's a common thing people do on their jobs and in casual conversation every day.
It has nothing to do with Caitlin being young, or blond, or dumb, or a beauty pageant contestant. She didn't want to look awkward by asking to have the question repeated. There are 50-year-old "tough guys" who do the same thing. It's a common character flaw with an easy fix.
