ABC Anchors Laugh at Owen Wilson Suicide Attempt
In their report on Owen Wilson's suicide attempt, ABC's World News Now anchors Taina Hernandez and Ryan Owens couldn't stop giggling. The word "depression" made Hernandez especially giddy. Oh, it's probably just how some people involuntarily laugh at funerals, we thought at first. But no: watch the whole video to see the far-less-classy reason for their delirium. Then check out their "apology" here. Funny, we drink a lot of coffee too, but it never turned us into a five-year-old.

1. That female newscaster needs to be fired shes immature, has a sick sense of humor, unprofessional, and lacks any kind of tact or grace.
Linda Miller at 10:46AM on Sep 4th 2007
2. If the I-man lost his career due to the nappy headed hos joke in a comedy enviroment, then theses two ninnies should be fired for sure
Jeff Marshall at 11:14AM on Sep 4th 2007
3. Very disturbed individuals, making alot of money, giggling at a talented young mans suicide attempt. They should lose their jobs if they are unable to control such immature actions re:such a serious subject.
My daughter is friends with his uncle and other family members, very down to earth normal individuals. A very close family.
Being Bi-Polar and not diagnosed until the age of 39 was painful, not only for myself but my family also. Mental illness and addiction go hand in hand, when not diagnosed we self-medicate and become addicts as well as suffering from a detrimental illness.
This IS NOT A JOKE!!! This young man tried to commit suicide in his bathtub, a common thing among attempted and suicide victims, beacuse they do not want their to have to clean up a mess. Yes, it sounds odd but he was suffering from a mental illness.
No compassion, understanding or common courtesy remains in this country. How very sad.....

4. Tiana Hernandez should be fired. Her unprofessional demeanor during the reporting of Owen Wilson's suicide attempt was pathetic. Certainly not up to the high standards of ABC World News. I for one will turn the channel whenever I see her from now on.

5. I found both of these so-called 'professional' journalists' attitudes while 'reporting' the Owen Wilson story, distasteful with regard to the serious topic of suicide attempt and the type of depression that leads to such an attempt. At the very least, they should be in hot water with their bosses. I sure know I'm never going to both to 'click over' to their program in future, if this is an example of the quality of their work!
Nancy Cobb at 11:22AM on Sep 4th 2007
6. Do they really think they were cute making fun of someone else's pain? Would they be joking if it were a member of their family or friends?
What happen to him was horrific enough but these two newsanchors should be held responsible for their comments and reactions. Totally uncalled for.

7. How pathetic - I can't imagine how these clowns made it on the air as so-called news casters, but as far as I'm concerned, they are an embarrassment to ABC news. I see absolutely nothing "humorous" about someone, anyone, facing one of the ultimate challenges of their life, and fighting to get their life turned around to a better place. I know this circumstance all too well. These idiots on ABC news should be fired immediately.

8. On one hand, I can understand why someone might find Owen Wilson's depression a 'funny' Many people are under the misconception that with as much professional success and money as Owen Wilson has, how can he be depressed? But, what reportedly is hurting him so badly is the loss of his girlfriend. Our modern society--based on convenience--calls such total love "co-dependence". But, the formulas of every love story, every book or movie about love are about exactly that kind of love. Hell, even the greeting cards talk about "I can't live without you!" So, obviously, there was a time when our society valued such things. Maybe deep down we all still want to but are afraid. He seems like a good guy and I hope he finds that kind of love again.

9. you people are silly. They should be fired? for what? and btw, what is so tragic about a film star who wants to end it all because he's dissatified with his relatively meaningless life? he didn't even try that hard. c'mon; you folks out there with nothing better to do than read the dribble coming from 3rd rate hacks who couln't make it in real journalism need to check yourselves. you think owen wilson gives a @#$% about you? do you think these bloggers care? no one cares. and if you can't find the humor; albeit somewhat morbid humor, in a pathetic so-called movie star's half hearted attempt to off himself, you're the one who is disturbed.

10. I'm big enough to be able to figure at 2:00 in the morning what I should relize as a joke and what is not. Yes the subject is serious but Owen Wilson is a joke for not being strong enough to seek help and that is what I found houmours in the comments
scott at 12:23PM on Sep 4th 2007
11. They can't even make a serious apology. They seem to be suppressing laughter and dont even look at the camera--too busy shiffling papers. I thought ABC news was supposed to be a respectable media outlet. Doesnt look like it here.
travis at 12:31PM on Sep 4th 2007
12. How do you know, "he didnt try that hard?" MSNBC reported that he has deep, serious wounds to both wrists." If his brother had not found him in the bath tub, he would be dead.
Depression is not funny under any circumstances and those people who believe that --you should be happy if you have lots of money? Get a clue.
Money is the last thing to make anyone happy. It often only ADDS to your misery.
Jamie at 1:32PM on Sep 4th 2007
13. What is wrong with that woman? I wouldn't waste another moment of my depressed time watching or listening to that silly two-some!
Honi at 12:38PM on Sep 4th 2007
14. First, I don't think much of wilson or his movies. Second, and more important, I can't even bring myself to watch the video (hey look, I've never watched ABC news before, and I'm not about to start now). Are there no ethics in broadcast journalism anymore? If what I'm reading here is true, than these two overpaid, blow-dried clowns should not only be pink-slipped; they should be black-balled right out of their so-called "profession". I can't watch it, it sounds so morbid that it makes me physically ill. It sounds like the Springer show, but without the moral that he would at least tack on the end. It's no wonder that this nation takes Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert more seriously thatn the so-called "real" news. COLBERT NATION!!!

15. Obviously there were other issues in the studio that were making them laugh. Most people haven't worked in television and wouldn't realize the organized chaos that is ocurring while anchors are on camera. There is a whole other world in the studio that the viewer isn't privvy to. Unfortunately for these two anchors they couldn't control their laughter, which was at an inappropriate moment. Plus, this is the kind of "news anchor" that producers are now nurturing and grooming for the "news". It's sensational. Is it really worthy of the news?
