Why Does Bush Still Support Abstinence-Only Sex Ed?
We just found this new PSA on Feministing.com. The government-funded ad encourages parents to tell their kids to wait until marriage to have sex. The campaign's dubious tagline: "Success comes to kids who wait to have sex."
So this is what our tax dollars are supporting instead of SCHIP.
According to this advocacy group, "For the Fiscal Year 2007, the federal government has allocated $176 million through three separate funding streams for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. The President has proposed increasing this funding level to $204 million for Fiscal Year 2008."
And these millions are being spent in spite of the overwhelming evidence that abstinence-only programs are useless.
From an April 2007 New York Times editorial: A Congressionally mandated report issued this month by the Mathematica Policy Research firm found that elementary and middle school students in four communities who received abstinence instruction - sometimes on a daily basis - were just as likely to have sex in the following years as students who did not get such instruction.
So, why are we paying for more commercials promoting a failed strategy in the very important fight against unwanted pregnancy and STDs?

Problem is, kids have no intention of listening. Because adults sure as hell don't listen, sex is fun, etc. Kids barely listen to the law itself when it comes to "fun" things (usually stupid and dangerous ones too, like drinking 5 cups of vodka).
I should think it's better to be realistic and try to keep them from having unwanted pregnancies and STDs instead of using an approach that frankly, people laugh at.

17. It's simply time to realize that abstinence, along with the notion of 'sexual abuse of children' was created by feminists trying to control men through their sexual organs.
When it didn't work, they started pushing for more and more laws in order to make more and more sexual acts 'illegal' if the woman or child had 'regret' about the sexual encounters.
The best thing we could do to prevent children from getting pregnant early is to ENCOURAGE them to be sexually active early, put all girls on birth control unless their parents sign a waiver saying that they will be responsible for any children their children have until the age of 18 or later than that, and start realizing that an ignorant child = a child who is easily forced or threatened into sexual activity by ANYONE, not just adults.

18. I also have to add that we should start pushing for more money to be put into finding cures and vaccines for STD's. I mean, the United States only puts 100 million dollars a year into AIDS research, when it is at almost epidemic levels!
Time to start pouring BILLIONS of dollars into research for a cure for STD's..... but of course the religious right doesn't want us to do that, because then they would have nothing to terrify males and females into not being sexually active with anymore.

19. I was surprised to learn a while back that Bush loves his catholic priest adviser - even though Bush is not catholic. Bush doesn't care about the issue one way or another. He is selfish and has done nothing to cut the pregnancy rate or to help poor children when they get here after his abstinence only policy fails. Kids do best when they are given the facts which should include ways to prevent pregnancy if you do have sex.

20. Todd, you can preach abstinence all you want until you're blue in the face, but that doesn't stop a kid's sex drive from kicking in. I don't know how old you are, but young or old, as a male, you must know about having a healthy sex drive. Good for you if you're able to control it, but not everyone can or wants to. That's just a fact of life, and it doesn't mean you're a bad person if you can't control it. Education is key, but once you give them the knowledge, it's still up to the individual to use it or not.

21. I don't know what reality is like on Planet Kidwell, Chris, but here on Earth, abstinence is not a feminist concept. If anything, feminists have championed the healthy, responsible sexual behavior. It wasn't a woman who invented the chastity belt or the monstrosity of female genital mutilation. Abstinence is a patriarchal notion, usually espoused by fanatic religious leaders (who tend to be male, by the way). As for your inability to comprehend the horrific reality of the sexual abuse of children (and the sexual abuse of adults in the sex trafficking trade), I hope someone (starting with your mother) thwacks you upside the head on this one. Open your eyes, Chris. Sexual abuse is real, and it happens to millions of children, women, and men worldwide. Willful idiocy about the issue does not help matters.

24. Believe it or not, abstinence works. It cuts down on the births of babies born into one parent home, ill-prepared parent homes, absent (child in foster care) parents. Abstinence also reduces the necessity of wondering whether or not one has contracted an STD, and whether or not one has contracted AIDS. Abstinence eliminates the guilt that can occur when one has had sex and realizes that sex costs. I totally agree with SouthernFriedFreak's last paragraph. Wake up people. Abstinence has the best benefits.

25. Todd (#2)- As a parent it is my job to tell my child to wait. I don't want the government, especially this one, spending my tax dollars to do it. There are much better things we could better spend the money on. Maybe starting to repay the more than One Trillion dollars that have been stolen out of the Social Security Trust Fund. Because of this President, a C student, I can't even tell my kids the importance of good grades without the comeback- Well I can be President!
stephen at 8:48PM on Oct 10th 2007
26. "We should be encouraging kids to wait."
Actually, no, we shouldn't. Learning how to deal with sexual things is an intrinsic part of growing up and should be taught to children early. Not to 'just say no' but to have sex with whoever they want as long as they know that the other person cares about them (hell, even most pedosexuals like myself fit that bill) and they have no persistent STD's (which everyone should be screened for no matter their age when they go in for a checkup, even if they are 2!) which they would be able to tell easily if we would mark people with AIDS and other persistent diseases that are communicable with an indelible mark, perhaps a bio-hazard sign.
No, I don't have any persistent diseases, but I didn't come up with the above. It was a friend of mine who has HIV (gotten from her longtime boyfriend because he was stepping out on her without telling her he was!) who came up with it.

Yes, I am, and yes, I do. So what? Is it frightening to you that you cannot shoot down any of my arguments without the old tired speech of "THE BEEEEG BAD PEEEEEEEDOPHIILE!"
Get a life woman, realize that your children are not in need of your moralizing, and start allowing them their sexual choice like we should have for all these years and the knowledge that they need to become responsible people (not necessarily sexually inactive in childhood) and live productive lives (though that is also a value judgement by someone else on them).
Christopher Kidwell at 9:00PM on Oct 10th 2007
28. Oh, and to make another point: I do not write child rape fiction, that is a lie. I do however write OTHER kinds of fiction that involves children and adults together, but I say away from the rape fiction unless you want to call aliens taking control of children's minds and getting rid of all their inhibitions rape fiction.

29. To whom it may concern, and this should concern us all! Maybe President Bush knows the following facts and is trying do what is best for our children. For one thing, abstinence is the only sure way to keep from getting an STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease). Condoms do not reduce the risk of HPV or HSV. HPV is Human Papiloma Virus. HPV is highly contagious and over 60% of individuals exposed will become infected. It is transmitted by skin-to-skin contact, therefore, condoms do not protect you from this virus. Also,99% of cervical cancer cases involve HPV. HSV is Herpes Simplex Virus. One out of every four women and men who engage in premarital sex will become infected with HSV during their lifetime and genital herpes has been associated with an increased risk of HIV infection. Even if your are among the 2-10% of those who are using condoms "perfectly" you will still potentially become infected with HIV if exposed.
If you use a condom:
You will become pregnant 17% of the time if you do not use the condom "perfectly".
You will become pregnant 5% of the time even if you use the condom "perfectly".
There are over 25 different types of sexually transmitted diseases and each year in the US, nearly 4 million adolescents become infected with one or more STD's. Over 15 million sexually transmitted infections occur each year (many of these diseases have no symptoms, but if left untreated, can cause infertility, brain, nervous system, and cardiac problems and death). HIV leads to AIDS and eventually death. It is estimated that only 5% of those infected with HIV will live more than 10 years without developing AIDS.
The only people not at risk for STD's and/or pregnancy are those who have never been sexually involved (this is defined as having genital contact or oral sex) with another individual. The only way to have sex and not get a disease is to have sex with one partner who is not infected and remain faithful to that one partner for life. And we haven't even touched on the subject of teen pregnancy and abortion!
48% of all pregnancies that occurr in individuals
cherryl hansen at 9:27PM on Oct 10th 2007
30. 48% of all pregnancies that occurr in individuals 40 million babies being aborted in the US. Think of the social security they would have paid in!
I want say that I know personally that abortion is not the "quick fix" that some would lead us to believe it is. Thank God, there is forgiveness! But there are also consequences for our actions, that we still must live with. I have had several miscarriages and there is not a day that goes by that I do not regret my decision to have an abortion. Therefore, I am doing my best to keep my children and others from making these same mistakes. By the way, if you do not like living in a Christian nation, there are many other countries where you can go and live just like animals and do everything that comes to mind. Just remember, like it or not, you will answer one day for what you do and what you encourage others to do. Open your mind while there is still time and become truly free! It is for freedom that Christ has set us free!
