Embarrassed at the murderous legacy of atheist Communist regimes in the twentieth century, leading atheists seek to even the score with believers by portraying Adolf Hitler and his Nazi regime as theist and specifically Christian. Christopher Hitchens in God Is Not Great depicts Hitler as a pagan polytheist-not exactly a conventional theist but still a theist. Atheist websites routinely claim that Hitler was a Christian because he was born Catholic, he never publicly renounced his Catholicism, and he wrote in Mein Kampf, "By defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord." Atheist writer Sam Harris writes that "the Holocaust marked the culmination of...two hundred years of Christian fulminating against the Jews" and therefore "knowingly or not, the Nazis were agents of religion."
How persuasive are these claims? My New York Times bestseller What's So Great About Christianity has the full story and the requisite citations but here's the condensed version. Hitler was born Catholic just as Stalin was born into the Russian Orthodox Church and Mao was raised as a Buddhist. These facts prove nothing as many people reject their religious upbringing, as these three men did. From an early age, historian Allan Bullock writes, Hitler "had no time at all for Catholic teaching, regarding it as a religion fit only for slaves and detesting its ethics."
How then do we account for Hitler's claim that in carrying out his anti-Semitic program he was an instrument of divine providence? During his ascent to power, Hitler needed the support of the German people-both the Bavarian Catholics and the Prussian Lutherans-and to secure this he occasionally used rhetoric such as "I am doing the Lord's work." To claim that this rhetoric makes Hitler a Christian is to confuse political opportunism with personal conviction. Hitler himself says in Mein Kampf that his public statements should be understood as propaganda that bears no relation to the truth but is designed to sway the masses.
The Nazi idea of an Aryan Christ who uses the sword to cleanse the earth of the Jews-what historians call "Aryan Christianity"-was obviously a radical departure from the traditional Christian understanding and was condemned as such by Pope Pius XI at the time. Moreover, Hitler's anti-Semitism was not religious, it was racial. Jews were targeted not because of their religion-indeed many German Jews were completely secular in their way of life-but because of their racial identity. This was an ethnic and not a religious designation. Hitler's anti-Semitism was secular.
Hitler's Table Talk, a revealing collection of the Fuhrer's private opinions, assembled by a close aide during the war years, shows Hitler to be rabidly anti-religious. He called Christianity one of the great "scourges" of history, and said of the Germans, "Let's be the only people who are immunized against this disease." He promised that "through the peasantry we shall be able to destroy Christianity." In fact, he blamed the Jews for inventing Christianity. He also condemned Christianity for its opposition to evolution.
Hitler reserved special scorn for the Christian values of equality and compassion, which he identified with weakness. Hitler's leading advisers like Goebbels, Himmler, Heydrich and Bormann were atheists who hated religion and sought to eradicate its influence in Germany.
Recognizing the absurdity of equating Nazism with Christianity, Christopher Hitchens seeks to push Hitler into the religious camp by portraying his ideology as a "quasi-pagan phenomenon." Hitler may have been a polytheist who worshipped the pagan gods, Hitchens suggests, but polytheism is still theism. This argument fails to distinguish between ancient paganism and modern paganism. It's true that Hitler and the Nazis drew heavily on ancient archetypes-mainly Nordic and Teutonic legends-to give their vision a mystical aura. But this was secular mysticism, not religious mysticism.
The ancient Germanic peoples truly believed in the pagan gods. Hitler and the Nazis, however, relied on ancient myths in the modern form given to them by Nietzsche and Wagner. For Nietzsche and Wagner, there was no question of the ancient myths being true. Wagner no more believed in the Norse god Wotan than Nietzsche believed in Apollo. For Hitler and the Nazis, the ancient myths were valuable because they could give depth and significance to a secular racial conception of the world.
In his multi-volume history of the Third Reich, historian Richard Evans writes that "the Nazis regarded the churches as the strongest and toughest reservoirs of ideological opposition to the principles they believed in." Once Hitler and the Nazis came to power, they launched a ruthless drive to subdue and weaken the Christian churches in Germany . Evans points out that after 1937 the policies of Hitler's government became increasingly anti-religious.
The Nazis stopped celebrating Christmas, and the Hitler Youth recited a prayer thanking the Fuhrer rather than God for their blessings. Clergy regarded as "troublemakers" were ordered not to preach, hundreds of them were imprisoned, and many were simply murdered. Churches were under constant Gestapo surveillance. The Nazis closed religious schools, forced Christian organizations to disband, dismissed civil servants who were practicing Christians, confiscated church property, and censored religious newspapers. Poor Sam Harris cannot explain how an ideology that Hitler and his associates perceived as a repudiation of Christianity can be portrayed as a "culmination" of Christianity.
If Nazism represented the culmination of anything, it was that of the nineteenth-century and early-twentieth century ideology of social Darwinism. Read historian Richard Weikart's revealing study, From Darwin to Hitler. As Weikart documents, both Hitler and Himmler were admirers of
The Nazis also drew on the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, adapting his atheist philosophy to their crude purposes. Nietzsche's vision of the ubermensch and his elevation of a new ethic "beyond good and evil" were avidly embraced by Nazi propagandists. Nietzsche's "will to power" almost became a Nazi recruitment slogan. I am not for a moment suggesting that Darwin or Nietzsche would have approved of Hitler's ideas. But Hitler and his henchmen approved of Darwin's and Nietzsche's ideas. Harris simply ignores the evidence of the Nazis' sympathies for
So in addition to the mountain of corpses that the God-hating regimes of Stalin, Mao, Pot Pot and others have produced, we must add the body count of the God-hating Nazi regime. The Nazis, like the Communists, deliberately targeted the churches and the believers because they wanted to create a new man and a new utopia freed from the shackles of traditional religion and traditional morality. In an earlier blog, I asked what is atheism's contribution to civilization? One answer to that question: Genocide.

46. Was Hitler an atheist? Was Hitler a Christian?
Does it really matter? If I could prove either claim, without any doubt, what would it mean?
Is this debate really going to settle anything?
However, I will contribute to this infantile debate, if only to help end it. Read on:
A couple of quotes and follow-up thoughts:
Stephen F. Roberts: “I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours.”
Julian Huxley: "Today the god hypothesis has ceased to be scientifically tenable ... and its abandonment often brings a deep sense of relief. Many people assert that this abandonment of the god hypothesis means the abandonment of all religion and all moral sanctions. This is simply not true. But it does mean, once our relief at jettisoning an outdated piece of ideological furniture is over, that we must construct some thing to take its place."
Whether Hitler believed in the Judeo-Christian or did not, it is clear that Hitler portrayed himself as having divine authority and destiny. Many people who might or might not claim to believe in a supreme being often set themselves up as a rightful replacement. You can say that they are “rebels”.
Let’s face it people, according to Judeo-Christian theology, Satan is NOT an atheist. Satan believes in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. That does not make him a Christian, a Jew, or a follower of any religion.
The same could be said of Hitler. No intelligent and honest person would argue that he was an atheist or a Christian.
"Historically speaking, the Christian religion is nothing but a Jewish sect…After the destruction of Judaism, the extinction of Christian slave morals must follow logically…Ah, the God of the deserts, that crazed, stupid, vengeful Asiatic despot with his powers to make laws!" Adolf Hitler
This is from a collection of short stories edited by Armin L. Robinson, titled “The Ten Commandments: Ten Short Novels of Hitler's War Against the Moral Code” (1943)
This book is out of print and I have not been able to confirm if the above quote is from the introduction to the collection (hence, can assume to be true quote of Hitler) or a quote from one of the novels (hence, some literary license can be assumed).
However, the following quote supports the accuracy of the first quote:
"The days of the Cross are counted. We must deliver the German nation from the pernicious influence of Christianity." (Ludendorff. Nazi leader. Quoted in Anti-Semitism Throughout the Ages by Count Heinrich Coudenhove-Kalergi. 1935.)

47. I count ten posters in the Comment section that have gotten the Correct Answer.
D'SOUSA: The Nazi idea of an Aryan Christ who uses the sword to cleanse the earth of the Jews-what historians call "Aryan Christianity"-was obviously a radical departure from the traditional Christian understanding...
Yes, some Christians interpret portions of the Bible differently than other Christians.
Reply to: Hitler reserved special scorn for the Christian values of equality and compassion, which he identified with weakness.
If you think television evangelists are greedy and aren't really Christians... are YOU still a Christian?
If you can accuse ONE GROUP of Christians as being "NOT TRUE CHRISTIANS" - and we've seen two examples of that in the comments section within the last week - are YOU still a Christian?
Mark 10:19 Jesus (told the rich young ruler) "You know the Commandments: Do not commit adultery. DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS.
"Teacher, all these I have observed from my youth."
THEN JESUS SAID TO HIM, "ONE THING YOU LACK. SELL ALL THAT YOU OWN AND GIVE THE PROCEEDS TO THE POOR..." But he was sad at this answer, and went away grieved, for he had great possessions.
If a person says the ONLY way you can be a "TRUE Christian" is to sell everything you own and give it to the poor..." is THAT person a Christian?
If you don't sell ALL your property, did Jesus say you can't be a Christian? Is that the correct definition of "Christian'?
Hitler WAS a Christian in the sense that he chose PART of the message to believe, and ignored the parts he didn't like. Just like every OTHER Christian.
When it comes to the definition of "Atheist," let's use this comment that Denish quoted:
Hitler wrote in Mein Kampf, "By defending myself against the Jew, I am fighting for the work of the Lord."
If Hitler believed that he rose to political power because the Almighty or God or Providence chose him, then he's NOT an atheist.
Diagram it out. Write down the definition of "atheist" and compare it to Hitler's published statements about his beliefs.
Then, you won't make mistakes like this:
D'SOUZA: we must add the body count of the God-hating Nazi regime. The Nazis, like the Communists, deliberately targeted the churches and the believers because they wanted to create a new man and a new utopia freed from the shackles of traditional religion and traditional morality. In an earlier blog, I asked what is atheism's contribution to civilization? One answer to that question: Genocide.
This ^ right here is where your LOGIC jumps the rails. You go off the Correct Path just because you want to insult atheists.
Atheism's contribution to civilization is the knowledge that anyone who claims to have a book written by God or is delivering a message from God is the victim of a SCAM. Because atheists have a belief that God does not exist.
Hitler did NOT have that belief. Hitler thought God existed and had chosen him to lead Germany out of the defeat in World War I and back to greatness.
Matthew 10:34 Jesus said, "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword."
If you believe Jesus came to bring peace on earth, does that mean you are NOT a Christian?

48. PEOPLE!
WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR ACTIONS?
Theism is the root cause of majority genocide?
Is not the hand of humans responsible for the slaying of humans? Are not the minds of corrupt humans who use God's name in vain to further their material and evil movement?
How is this God's fault? Theism is the reference to God's existence and the resulting thought process, this has nothing to do with the murders of murderers.
And for the fact that these murders ("religious" or not) are going AGAINST GOD by BREAKING GOD'S LAW OF LOVE, OBEY HIM, AND BE JUST (fair).
God clearly states, do not kill the innocent. Our judgment of who is innocent is akin to viewing a sweet young child. That child is innocent, no dispute possible.
Clear enough for those so enraptured with self proclamation and pride of man? You boast yourself every time you pretend God doesn't exist. You try and raise yourself with your earthly accolades - BUT YOU DID NOTHING.
We created nothing, we simply re-arrange what already exists.
Without wisdom and love (emotion/compassion/understanding) we would be the primitive animal dwelling in caves raping our women and killing each other with stones. Wait...we ARE DOING THIS.
How can you persist in being so PROUD? Read the previous sentence until you understand it.
Your head is like stone without water.

49. Okay, everyone has their own opinion, about religion, once again I will let you all in a little secret, being Christian has nothing to do with a religious sect. Being Christian is choosing to follow GOD thru his Son Jesus Christ, following his commandments, not someone who was a crazy and demonic as Hitler who killed millions of the Jews. Anyone, who thinks that this is just history and we should leave it as such, is a major fool. God has been dealing with the Jews in one way or another ever since Moses lead them out of captivity. They are to this day GOD's chosen people and regardless what mankind has to say about it, GOD says differently so just quit bringing every ding dong Greek philosopher that ever lived and listen to someone who died several years before this satanic creature came on the scene. Yet, one would if they were Christian could compare him to the Anti-Christ that is talked about in Revelations. There have been several injustices done in the name of Religion however, a Christian is more discerning in knowing what is truth and what is lies. From my stand point as a Christian, those who believe that the OLD TESTAMENT
is the way to live by today's standards then you need to rethink. We are Gentile nation not anything else. Again, it does not matter what sign is above your door. The only thing that matters is that you believe with all your heart that GOD sent his son to be the final sacrifice and all the Old Laws were done away with. That you are now under the new law and that you are forgiven by Grace. One day we will be jugded, on that day will be the deciding factor where you or I or Hitler or any other person who called their work whether good or bad done in the name of Religion. Think about that one, for awhile.

50. If Hiteler wasn't a christian, he went through a lot of trouble to make the people of Germany believe that he was one. Why would he do so?
Because he KNEW that the christians would more likely BLINDLY FOLLOW him if he presented himself that way!
Just like George W. Bush thought, as revealed by David Kuo to christians, and by common sense to the rest of us, since we all knew that before Kuo's book even came out. Bush is a Hitler christian for sure. Same type of man exactly.
So whether Hitler was a REAL christian is completely MOOT. OF COURSE he wasn't a REAL Christian, in the sense of a believer in Jesus' words, since they he couldn't have used violence in any form. Same for Bush. But they're both christians (small "c") since they claim it to the world, for THEIR OWN purposes.
It's not Jesus' words that cause men to do bad things, it's PRIDE and ARROGANCE. As I see it, MOST christians on this thread and online in general seem to be a Hitler christian, or if you prefer the current paradigm, a Bush christian, since it's all for show and influence and personal pride in belonging to the god team, and not because of any real grace or spirituality that they have.

51. Quite the conundrum!! As revealed by William, every person (rightfully) has their own description of what a Christian is. There are many many churches that differ wildly in their interpretation of their faith.
So Hitler had his description, the current pope has his (and he states that the only true church is the catholic church, by the way); so, who are you "Christians" on the blog to say what determines the correctness of the christianity label? Hubris hubris hubris.

53. Dinesh D'Souza must actually read these blogs - he's getting desperate now! Considering how many PRO CHRISTIAN statements Hitler made, it's hard to picture him being an "atheist" - wouldnt it have been a little difficult to stand up in public and defend something he himself didnt believe in - and do that repeatedly? Maybe once, but not over and over!
Christians always claim other christians who do evil are "not real christians" - well, that category includes a LARGE number of people who claim they ARE! Just to use a small stupid example, look at Fred Phelps - HE certainly says he's a christian - can anyone claim otherwise?
Christian ideas and concepts are certainly what motivates him, no matter how insane he seems!
The people who ran the Spanish Inquisition were devout pious people who spent hours in prayer, seeking "God's" guidance - and evidently "god" told them "heretics" should be burned alive!
You cant keep claiming these people arent real christians - they ARE, whether you like it or not!
Jesus himself said "I come not to bring peace but a SWORD!"

54. People can hypothesize all they want. Is the Bible the true story of the world? Get a grip. Was Hitler a Christian? Look at history, folks. Go as far back as you can, and you will find persecution in the name or religion, everywhere. I object to having religion stuffed down my throat. I was baptized a Catholic and am now a Methodist. But I have seen more abuse of the words Christian and Christianity, especia.lly in regard to those who advertise as Christian Business run on Christian Principles. In fact, if someone introduces themselves to me and indicates immediately that they

56. Secular schools can never be tolerated because such schools have no religious instruction, and a general moral instruction without religious foundation is built on air; consequently all character training and religion must be derived from faith
-Adolph Hitler
"My feeling as a Christian points me to my Lord and Savior as a fighter. It points me to the man who once in loneliness, surrounded only by a few followers, recognized these Jews for what they were and summoned men to fight against them and who, God's truth! was greatest not as a sufferer but as a fighter.
"In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was his fight against the Jewish poison.
"Today, after two thousand years, with deepest emotion I recognize more profoundly than ever before the fact that it was for this that He had to shed his blood upon the Cross.
"As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice...
"And if there is anything which could demonstrate that we are acting rightly, it is the distress that daily grows. For as a Christian I have also a duty to my own people. And when I look on my people I see them work and work and toil and labor, and at the end of the week they have only for their wages wretchedness and misery.
"When I go out in the morning and see these men standing in their queues and look into their pinched faces, then I believe I would be no Christian, but a very devil, if I felt no pity for them, if I did not, as did our Lord two thousand years ago, turn against those by whom today this poor people are plundered and exploited."
-Adolph Hitler, in a speech delivered April 12, 1922 Published in "My New Order" Quoted in "Freethought Today" April 1990
"The Government of the Reich, who regard Christianity as the unshakable foundation of the morals and moral code of the nation, attach the greatest value to friendly relations with the Holy See and are endeavouring to develop them."

Why do you say the Nazi regime was “God-hating?” Hitler was probably a theist. Consider the following link:
http://www.stephenjaygould.org/ctrl/quotes_hitler.html
Were other members of his regime atheists? Let's say some were. Dinesh, are you suggesting that their atheism CONTRIBUTED to their doing some of the awful things they did? I doubt it. First, every atheist I know is a relatively ethical person. I'm an atheist, and I'm an ethical person. My atheism doesn't make it harder for me to be an ethical person. Second, I do not see atheists committing unethical acts at a higher rate than theists. If atheism does indeed to contribute to many people doing unethical things, one would expect to see atheists doing unethical things at a higher rate than non-atheists. And I don't see that.
Is it possible that SOME people do things because of their atheism? I guess. But if the majority of the people in the world were atheists, I doubt we would see a less ethical world overall. Because I'm convinced that atheism doesn't make it harder for MOST people to be ethical. And theism probably makes it harder for some people to be ethical. Consider the people who did the 9-11 terrorist attacks. So, even if most people being atheists would contribute to some people being more ethical, the world would probably not be more unethical overall, because theism makes it harder for some people to be ethical. So, it would balance out.
However, for the sake of argument, let's say atheism does make it harder for some people to be ethical. That's completely irrelevant to whether I know that there is a God. Similarly, suppose Louis the 14th did some things he shouldn’t have partly because he believed in heliocentrism. I’m still quite sure that the earth revolves around the sun.

It makes me wonder how many of the ones telling me this would qualify themselves as a "real Christian?"

Matthew 10:34 Jesus said, "Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword."
If you believe Jesus came to bring peace on earth, does that mean you are NOT a Christian?
William Hays
You ignore the fact that Jesus referred to the One to be sent. He will be called counselor and teacher. The nations will gravitate towards him, mainly because he speaks and lives truth.
Jesus also said he has to die or else he could not do his heavenly duty to send the Counselor.
The book of Isiah shows repeated reference to the Stone, the Eagle, the Holy One from the North, the Holy One from the East. This book indicates he will rule the earth in Just Glory to God.
Jesus came to stir up all that was necessary and died on the cross for our inquities. He singlehandedly made the longest and strongest impact in human history. We, as humans, have misused the power of His knowledge and the faith that it instill in people to OUR SELFISH WICKEDNESS. Then you are the first to destroy reason for the millions of people who are faithful and live excellent lives.
You are now committing acts of atrocity, by blaming God for all that is wrong on this earth. You neglect YOUR responsibility (as well as the responsibility of our ancestors) for OUR FAILURES TO CORRECTLY LIVE OUR LIVES. The atrocity is apparent in the fact that you pretend we had no blame in the Genocide ("religious" or not).
This is like seeing someone murder a young girl, then accusing someone else for that atrocity. You do this to push your agenda of your godlike ability to reason and "enlighten" people. Perhaps that person you accuse is the same person you felt let you down? There's no such thing, you can only let yourself down.
This is a combination of sand-stilt pride and apathetic "wasn't me" attitude that brings parts of our society to garbage.
So often you and your similar "thinkers" like to accuse "religious" fanatics of cramming ideology down people's throats, and in many cases YOU ARE RIGHT. But this doesn't change the fact that you are ironically the biggest Hypocrite of all. You enforce your opinion (simply by stating it with emphasis and conviction) that God had nothing to do with nothing, then you say God was responsible for the terrible atrocities of HUMAN history.
How is this possible? You claim God doesn't exist, then you blame a non-existing God for OUR WRONGS? All genocide is unclean, regardless of how you label it for your agenda.
Here comes your rebuttal "God doesn't exist but we use religion under the guise of God's law to commit atrocities. This doesn't say God exists". I agree with you. Problem is your basis for believing that God doesn't exist is BECAUSE WE HAVE USED GOD AS THE REASON TO COMMITTING OUR CRIMES. That's the weakest point of reference because GOD HAS SPECIFICALLY TOLD US NOT TO DO THESE TERRIBLE ACTIONS. You are taking evidence of people's disobedience to God's law as the fact that God doesn't exist! That's not logically sound AT ALL.
If we listened and obeyed God's Laws in Truth (and not man-made interdiction and misused representation of that Law) this world would be in perfect harmony and life could be pain-free. It hurts God deeply to see His children stray so often, thousands of times. It hurts even more when the children pursuit evil and say it's in the NAME OF THE LORD. HORRIBLE!
Here is a simple listing:
1. Love everyone (especially God)
2. Obey these Laws
3. Act in just and fair heart - Shun what is wicked and protect what is truly Good (ie. raping children is WICKED, ie. FAMILY LOVE AND LIFE IS GOOD).
4. Study God's will (means prayer/communication and historical analysis for knowledge and understanding - also leads to true wisdom).
5. Praise and worship God in thanks and love. (Saying thank you to your Mom when she cooks you a nice 'n' yummy dinner is the RIGHT thing to do).
6. Trust in God (don't be so proud that you think you can handle everything. If you can't control EVERYTHING in this world, then you don't have control. Allow deference in the form of respect and allow God to exercise his wise will).
7. Share this knowledge and TEACH without persecution or prejudice. Do not force anything on anyone, simply present the Truth and the wise will retain it on their own accord.
To give basic viewpoint:
God is the fiercest general that you will ever come to know. He is also the most loving, compassionate, forgiving father you will ever know.
Why is this so hard to reconcile? A noble soldier goes off to war to protect love and nation, returns to embrace his young children and is acclaimed as a great man of respect. This is an example of a Godly person. Many times these soldiers of nobility are God's faithful.
Word to the wise - desist in foolish spiritual slippery slope.

60. Rita, your vision is so narrow. You belittle Greek philosphers? They were a phenomenal culture who gave the earth the first democratic philosophy. Humans have been around for more than 100,000 years, and plenty of people have given formidable advancements to human kind. You're do hung up on one person. You're welcome to your beliefs; as I am an atheist, I would expect you to do the same for me. Do NOT pray for me. Thanks, Linda
