There is a misconception in the mainstream press now that the netroots and progressive activists want more liberal representatives or candidates. That is totally untrue. I know, from the listeners to our show and readers of our website, that the reality is that we just want stronger representatives. People who are willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs.
I wrote about this phenomenon on our website. You can read that article here.
As I explain in that piece, some of the Democratic senators are significantly to the left of me on domestic and trade issues. I don't want them to become "more liberal." I just want them to fight the Bush administration on Iraq and abuses of the constitution. I don't even think those are liberal positions. They used to be conservative positions. I don't know what they are anymore, but I just wish someone would follow them and take on the most unpopular president of our lifetimes. The fact that they can't muster up the courage to do that is what makes us really sick of them.

"... the reality is that we just want stronger representatives. People who are willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs."
I want this too. I'm mostly republican in my voting...but I'n not married to either party...I WANT A CANDIDATE WHO WILL STAND UP FOR THE HUMAN SPECIES!
DON'T MAKE IT EASIER TO KILL OFF IMPERFECT OR UNWANTED HUMANS!!!
WHAT VALUES DOES A CANDIDATE STAND UP FOR - no matter WNAT? I.E. WHAT VALUES ARE NEGOTIABLE AND WHAT WILL HE/SHE STAND FOR NO MATTER WHAT?
For me, health care has problems, but it SCARES me that neither party stands for the HUMAN SPECIES all that well. I'm scared that soon rationing of health care and maybe OFFING of some humans will be added to the health care agenda to keep the budget in line...so WHY put health care in the hands of people who are finding MORE WAYS to GET RID OF HUMANS???
(THREE ways we have to get rid of the "less than perfect" humans
*active starvation
*abortion as birth control
*assisted suicide)
Anyone propose active starvation for the animal population lately?
PRESERVING THE HUMAN SPECIES SHOULD BE A TOP VALUE.

2. I'm looking for stronger candidates also. Ones who believe and will fight for limited federal government and sound fiscal and budget management. My party has dropped the ball on that. In fact they've gone over to the other side and found the benefits of pork.

3. Stand up for what they believe, What about what the Citizens want. Thats the big problem. Our elected officials donot listen to the common citizen. They all forget that our Declaration starts out with WE THE PEOPLE. We are the government, it there fore follows that we can hire and fire. They need to start listening before it is too late and they get fired.

4. Art #3. First of all, its the Constitution that begin with "We the people", but I think you knew that and it was an innocent mistake.
Although I do not disagree with you in principle, we must be careful of mob rule. There was a time in our history that the people in a segment of the country believed slavery was OK and wanted it. I think we can agree that what the people wanted wasn't what was best.
I've seen polls that say the majority of American's want Univeral Health Care. Personally, dispite the obvious benefits of free medical care, that would be a major mistake if we took that road. While health care would indeed become affordable, its only because someone else would be paying for it: taxpayers. Historically speaking (based on what has happened in other countries) it will also mean that health care will become scarce (less available) and will more than likely result in reduced quality.
I think the best approach would be to allow the free market to fix the problems but until the government gets their hands off, that will never happen.

6. I don't want more liberal or conservative. I want more God. If a person tells me they stand for what the Christian bible clearly states. Then I believe they will be humble, honest, loving, good care takers of what God has given us.

please tell me you're joking Claude! we surely don't need any more Christian fundamentalists in Congress!! and as they have proved time and time again the ones who profess they are such strong believers in god seem to be the most dishonest, uncompassionate, and arrogant demagogues in Washington! GOD plays no role in government and government play no role in GOD! anyone who believes in God should want a clear separation as politics would only bring God down to the dirty nasty level that they are on.

8. P.S. Claude - There is nothing Christian about a Republic... a representitve elected government of the people actually goes against the Bible!

9. The words conservative and liberal have little meaning. As Mr. Uygur pointed out himself, "They used to be conservative positions. I don't know what they are anymore....." Cenk Uygur's following statement is what I find particularly disturbing: "I know, from the listeners to our show and readers of our website, that the reality is that we just want stronger representatives. People who are willing to stand up and fight for their beliefs." I agree with commentator number 3. Who cares about their beliefs if they don't coincide with concerning the good of the people they're elected to represent? The terms "conservative" and "liberal" have little meaning really, as implied above. What matters most is who and what the candidates stand for and if they are true to their word. Of note, one candidate who stands out in both of these areas was just last week eliminated by big business in the "Democratic" debate held in Philadelphia, that being former Senator Mike Gravel. He's the one responsible for the release of The Pentagon Papers in the early 1970's! No one can say he doesn't stand up to power and what he believes in, yet his being withheld from the debate last week isn't even considered news not only by the mainstream but by most bloggers. An infamous dictator stated, "What luck for the rulers that men do not think." Of course we can add most women too these days as the media guide the people's thoughts and decisions in favor of the ultra-wealthy over everyone else. It's time we elect a leader who stands for the people and stands for what he or she says. I have video excerpts of Mike Gravel's event in Philadelphia, held a block or two from the debate he should've been included in, posted on the site below. The media shouldn't be doing our thinking and eliminating of candidates for us. That's not democracy. His party didn't withhold him from the debate, big business did. These are not publicly elected officials. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, no one knows exactly who made the decision to exclude the man who stood up to the Pentagon when he knew it was the right thing to do. If Cenk Uygur wants a strong candidate, Mike Gravel is a good place to start looking. Who else in this race has done anything like Mike Gravel? The answer is no one. - Dr. Kenneth J. 10. How about throwing all the self serving scumbags out.
They have lost touch with the people they were suppose to represent.
AL at 12:49PM on Nov 7th 2007
11. Cenk, I so agree with you. I hate the Republicans, but I can't depend on the Democrats to help me, they have no backbone! What have they done since they took control of Congress - nothing! As Lou Dobbs says, the Republicans and Democrats are just opposite wings of the same bird. I wish someone would shoot that bird down.
Sarah at 1:04PM on Nov 7th 2007
12. Secret Service guys reading this...Sarah was speaking metaphorically when she talked about shooting the bird down. Don't declare her a terrorist and imprison her without representation or a trial.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. No party can expect to have strong representatives if their opponents are weak. Weak Republicans lead to weak Democrats, and vice-versa. Exploiting scandal or exposing a purported weakness of the other guy does nothing to make my guy a stronger representative. Quite the contrary. It gives my guy an excuse to be a weaker representative. A notch above wherever the other guy is at. "My guy is a notch above dumb." Wow! What an effin' choice.
Pete, where are you at?
