An Indian man thought he was cursed by dogs, so naturally, he married one. I'm not kidding.
P Selvakumar, 33, from the Sivaganga district of India, was convinced that he had been cursed ever since he stoned two dogs to death (I don't know if he was, but he should have been). So, the Michael Vick of India decided the best idea was to marry a female dog to break the curse.
I don't know which idea was worse, stoning the other dogs to death or marrying the third to atone for it. Let's all hope he doesn't try to consummate the marriage. But since he has suffered paralysis and deafness due to his "curse" he might not be able to find or get a handle on his new bride.
I give Islam and Christianity a lot of grief for their nonsensical rules, but this takes the cake. Many people in this largely Hindu state attended the ceremony and cheered. They apparently thought Selvakumar was on to something when he came up with the brilliant idea of marrying the dog. After all, a local Hindu astrologer had suggested it. Well, then you really can't go wrong, can you?
At least, Selvakumar won't be offending anyone when he says, "Man, I married a real bitch!"

1. Couldn't he have just bought a dog from the pound and taken care of it to atone? This man ain't right.

2. # 2, I have a feeling that they do not have dog pounds in India as we know them here. For all we know this may be common practice.

3. From the article: "I give Islam and Christianity a lot of grief for their nonsensical rules, but this takes the cake."
Okay, lol. I was wondering *exactly* where you had room to go off on any Hindu, lol.
Can't you just sort of leave them out of it, though? The Christians and Islamics are the only ones actually trying to convert anyone. (The Hindu basically tell people to go home and wait to be reincarnated a Hindu. -- At least according to my comparative religions class and that neat video they showed! Yes, I can mock my own sources!)
At least wait until you can report on whether or not it [the marriage] worked! =)
(It could work! I want to see it work!)

5. This is hilarious stuff but kindly refrain from jumping into conclusions about India and hinduism based on the dogged antics of 1 man. Didn't a woman marry her pet dog in the US sometime back?

6. I can just hear the Anti-Gay Marriage Fundies now.. See we told you all this talk about Gay Marriage would lead to people marrying dogs. It's a sign from Juheezuz.

8. Young Jerks do story on Turkish Troops and how brave and fierce a fighters they are reported to be.
But, no stories about how brave American Troops are or about any decorated troops who have fought in Iraq. You do not have to support Bush's mess in Iraq to show support for our brave troops.
Now an anti USA troops movie is going to be released soon about a true story( which it is) of 2 drunken US Soldiers raping and kiling an Iraq girl of 14 yrs old. Movie producer, Democrat Billionaire Mark Cuban. Movie "Redacted" The 2 soldiers have been convicted and serving life for their crimes.
Problem, this movie is depicting such behavior as a norm of American Troops which it is not.If anyone reads or watches Asian/Arab news, knows this movie will be used as a recruiting tools for Terrorists, and American lives will be lost as a direct result of the anti american movie.
The far left radical part of politics support this movie. Hollywood and the Young Jerks do not and have not shown or reported on how brave and decent the vast majority of US Troops are.
The Young Jerks and Hollyood do not report on how violent the Terrorists are, from beheading, random bombing attacks in civilian areas, killing religious people, Muslims-Catholics-Hindu-Buddists etc.
What a good story or movie could be presented, but alas, we will never see that. Maybe because Young Jerks and Holywood are afraid of being beheaded by Islamic Radicals as an act of revenge of bad press.

9. You have written a whole article on this case. Don't you see what goes in your country. There is a saying that The whole community can be kept clean if one keeps his own house clean. Before getting into such issues try to sort out your own. It is good that you have bought this to the notice of common man and this case of marrying a Dog is truly simpleton.
One thing I have noticed in US is about Gays, lesbian, people date their daughters, mothers, sisters. You get to see a lot in Jerrry Springer, Maury, MOntel and other such shows on air. Truly worse.
The person in India is from a rural background. I being an Indian truly take it as a stupidity to marry a Dog for a Curse and so on. BUT, Human Being who are supposed to be literate and part of so called Super Power country acting like animals.
To state I would also say that I have noticed Americans to be Hungry for SEX and nothing else. EAT SEX AND SLEEP. Acting like ANIMALS and not HUMAN.
I am not scolding you but wanted to add my point of view on cases at your end at the same time I also agree that there is stupidity lying everywhere in the world.
Hope we as humans can do something better for ourselves by serving humanity and getting into the right things of morals and ethics instead of getting swayed away by Evil.
May GOD guide us on the Right Path with PEACE.
Hope you understand me Brother in the right perspective. Thank you.

10. Right Man:
That you would use Jerry Springer and such shows to form an opinion of normal behavior in the United States only shows you have been brainwashed by anti-American broadcasts in your country. If you understood the concept of the show you might feel differently. While I'm not denying there are some true and bona fide wackos in my country, shows like Jerry Springer, Maury Povich and the like invent false situations to attract attention and gain ratings. It's like looking at a train wreck; you look, you see it, but you don't really *want* to see it. Such might be the case with you since you seem to be so familiar with Jerry.
Please take into consideration that we are the melting pot; there are people from all over the world who come here for a better life, including MANY, or should I say HOARDS, of people from India. Answer: they like it better here and don't want to go home, probably because we are the land of the free - not to mention the home of the brave. Plus, I would like to remind you that under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States which should be read in its entirety by all nations, and on which the constitution of many countries is based, Robert Okane is entitled to Freedom of Speech.
You criticized Robert Okane for writing a rather long article on this case which, I point out, you didn't have to read; yet I notice you were not economical with your words either, and, in your spewing forth, managed to get in slurs at the United States which is so common from other countries, as well as from the liberal media here.
I never thought I'd find myself in a position in which I would be defending gays for I don't condone or agree with their practices; however, where you got the information that they marry their sisters, brothes, or any members of their families is entirely false, not to mention ridiculous, and Please don't say there are no gays in your country; homosexuality has, for centuries, been practiced in the Middle East, so you might be, based on the actions of homosexuality in your country, misinformed about homosexual practices in the US. Just because that is how homosexuals act in India, you cannot blanket another country with the same accusation.
I agree we, as humans, must band together to form a United World, but that's not going to happen. As long as there are terrorists who want to kill us for being Westerners, as long as there are people who hate and despise us for our Chistian and Judiasm beliefs, there will be terrorists trying, by force and destruction, to convert us to their beliefs. At least Christians are peaceful about it and, no matter what people say - whether or not you believe in Christianity, it's not bad for society.
My point - look in your own back yard before you throw stones - ha - into my back yard. Thanks for reading this and good luck to you in all your endeavors.

12. Right man... duly noted. Go back to watching your Jerry springer and jerking off to the rapture.
Linda Jett... you'd be far better served keeping your religion to yourself and out of government. After all, I'm sure that you wouldn't want to live under a muslim america where you are forced to wear a burka any more than I would want to live in a christian america where it is illegal for me to be gay, as robertson and phelps would have it be.
Just a heads up.
Somber at 12:09PM on Nov 15th 2007
13. Somber: You'd be "far better served" if you were able to understand what you read. The thrust of my post was not religion; naturally, though, let the word "Christianity" (you didn't mention Judiasm, did you -)be in print and someone's hackles will be raised, statements will be exaggerated, as they were in your post.
It will never be illegal for you to be gay, not even in a Christian America. You know that.
Linda Jett at 9:32PM on Nov 30th 2007
14. What this man did is terrible and so is the ignorant astrologer who advised him to do so. But to bitch about Hinduism here is like discarding Islam because of Osama Bin Laden.
If you guys have so much talent to research and write why not be more reasonable. There are stupid and smart people everywhere does not matter what religion they belong to. No religion is bad and then again if it weren't for people like you, how would we find confused people who go creating cults. ....
pooja at 4:23PM on Nov 15th 2007
15. Linda... there are christians who every month petition and lobby to marginalize and eliminate the ability of GLBT individuals to be equal citizens under the law. Who work to ban PFLAG clubs at high schools while pushing for greater and greater in inclusion of christian attitudes in schools. Who want to add a constitutional amendent that affects every state in the country to make it impossible for me to marry. Who give permission for other christians to engage in violence against us by saying we deserve bad thing to happen to us, that we're bad people, that God doesn't like us... and the saddest irony is that the woman I love IS a christian, inspite of all of this.
So, while I have little use for christianity myself, whenever some one like yourself comes along and makes blanket statements about christian values and christianity being good for society, I must speak up as an outsider. You say terrorists hate us for "our christian values?" I'd say it's far more accurate to say that we are hated for our americentric views and hegemonic influences that we have inflicted upon the world.
