Canadian Lawmakers call for Taser Ban
Last month a Polish man named Robert Dziekanski was killed at the Vancouver Airport after RCMP tasered him. Yesterday a video surfaced from a witness who recorded the event on his cell phone, now the story has really taken off. Google has hundreds of news stories related to Robert, so go ahead and pick your poison. The video below is from CBC The National has some pretty good nuggets of information, like how 286 people have now died from Tasers. Who would have thought 50,000 volts of electricity could be so dangerous? Well Canadian lawmakers are now calling for a moratorium on Taser use, I simply think cops should go back to using the old reliable lasso, what do you think about Tasers?

32. TASER is better then the option of the ole billyclub or blackjack. or the Bullet. The problem in that International Airport is the lack of multilingual personel whether it be lawenforcemnt or any other available translator.

35. Martha, with all due respect, I believe you are attributing grandiose motives to street cops. I'm sure there are many instances of cops using tazers for malignant purposes, or using them indiscriminately or too quickly. However, I do not believe the average street cop is trying to be the Gestapo when dealing with common street criminals. I believe that, for the most part, when a cop uses a tazer s/he expects an enraged and violent suspect to fall to the ground and be restrained.
I am also reasonably certain that the average street cop, like the average office or factory or retail worker, wants to do his job and go home to put his feet up at the end of his shift. This has nothing to do with the Holocaust, Martha.

38. My fellow citizen Claudio Castagnetta died last September, a few hours after being tasered. A doctor in Economics, head of the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Québec city, he was far from being a criminal. One day, he merely displayed what Canadians call an "erratic" outburst in a store. His behaviour, quite normal in Italy, is in fact considered criminal over here, and worthy of being tasered. He did not break any law, and a simple talk with a culture-savvy mountie would have solved the situation. I wish the RCMP spent less money on tasers, and more on honing the cultural and negotiating skills of its officers. That would have also helped Zofia Cisowski, mother of Robert Dziekanski, welcome her only child into the beacon of civilization we call Canada.
