If we add the 6,256 suicide victims from 2005 to the "official" 3,865 reported combat casualties; we get a sum of 10,121. Even a low-ball estimate of similar 2004 and 2006 suicide figures, would mean that the total number of US casualties from the Iraq war now exceed 15,000...Read More on Smirkingchimp.com...
Here is the CBS report on this sad story.

1. This is what happens when you have an immoral war. That's to bad that Bush invade Iraq instead of taking care of the true war on terror.

2. """But a five-month CBS News investigation discovered data that shows a startling rate of suicide, what some call a hidden epidemic, Chief Investigative Reporter Armen Keteyian reports exclusively."""
Lets see that again ""But a five-month CBS News investigation discovered"....
And again """But a five-month CBS News investigation discovered"...
Translation...this "investigation" isn't worth 5 cents.

3. It is very sad that more servicemen die from suicides than from actually in the war.Even in the Vietnam war, more service members have committed suicide that were killed in the war.
So many people talk about supporting the troops. Unfortunately many of those people only do that: talk.
I hope the new director of the VA will be able to get the funding needed to really support the troops that are returning home.

4. So Willet, If the administration says it, it's gospel? Everyone else is lying?

5. These Statistics Are Indeed Saddening. It Is My Hope That One Day, The People Of Our "Great Nation" Will Conclude That There Is No Honor, No Pride, And No Morality In WAR!

...in this best of all possible worlds.
Only phony soldiers kill themselves, right? Or it's all a lie and they're living in Brooklyn, maybe.

8. CBS bullshit or simply shoddy work.
Most of the military is comprised of males. Males in the general population have as high as a 19% suicide rate. This is fairly close to CBS first figure of 22%. It is disingenuous for CBS to compare the military rate to the general population rate which includes the female population.

9. MORE STATS FROM C.B.S,,NO LESS????? MY STATS SHOW THAT THEIR STATS USUALLY ARE WRONG, BUT NOT AS WRONG AS THE STATS FROM MSNBC OR EVEN THE STATS FROM CNN. HOWEVER, IF YOU READ THOSE SAME STATS IN A YOUNG TURKS BLOG, YOU KNOW IT'S NOT TRUE. THAT'S WHY I GET MY STATS FROM THE HOARD BLOG. HIS NETWORK OF WORLD-WIDE SNITCHES AND INFORMERS IS EVEN BIGGER THAN INTERPOL AND THE F.B.I. COMBINED. WHEN'S THE LAST TIME "YOU" HOARDED THE NEWS?????

This is what happens with ANY war.

You say the suicide rate among the male population is 19%!
Care to back that up? You're saying that almost one in five males kills himself?!?
That's just about the dumbest thing a wingnut has ever posted. Ever.

12. AMAZING COINCIDENCE:
We invade Iraq, to liberate them and make ourselves safer.......AND OH BY THE WAY, bush and cheney found a way to make billions of dollars off of it......amazing, startling coincidence!!

13. I have no doubts every suicide is relative to "something". I also have no doubt that most of these service suicides were "not" relative to the Iraq war. Much easier though to spin it your way.
bob at 7:38AM on Nov 20th 2007
14. Bob posits that suicide is "relative" to something, which is unquestionable - Ending one's existence isn't something anyone does on a whim. For him to claim that the Iraq conflict had no bearing on it is disingenuous. While people will end their lives for getting spurned by a love interest, that doesn't compare with watching your friends die in your arms. When you see a woman try to bring her dead child back to life, it haunts you. It's not the initial 20 minutes of intense emotion, that can be repeated on any given day, it comes back with an unbelievable clarity - the screams, the smells, the fear - it all comes back.
But Bob, from the comfort of his keyboard, knows for a fact that these things are irrelevant. He's seen the carnage on T.V., and it hasn't affected him. Therefore, seeing a mother try to bring her child back to life doesn't really affect you.

15. Suicide is terrible. And it seems to hit us harder when it’s committed by the very people that have dedicated their lives to protect us. I think that a solution would be to offer counseling to the returning troops, and to have a licensed counselor (or chaplain with certification) on base.
I hope that they aren’t suggesting that we pull all troops out again. If we do that, we will see more than high suicide rates.
