Breaking News: Man Takes Hostages at Hillary HQ

Posted Nov 30th 2007 1:59PM by Ada Calhoun
Filed under: Breaking News, Hillary Clinton

On MSNBC: a man with a bomb strapped to his chest has reportedly taken at least two Clinton campaign workers hostage in Rochester, NH. He has so far released a woman with a baby:

"A young woman with a 6-month or 8-month-old infant came rushing into the store just in tears, and she said, 'You need to call 911. A man has just walked into the Clinton office, opened his coat and showed us a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape,'" witness Lettie Tzizik said.

Hillary isn't there. She's in Virginia today.

We just switched on CNN, which has a helicopter on the scene, and they're saying Hillary has canceled today's appearances and Obama has evacuated his nearby office. The candidates are reportedly all calling each other to share information about the threat.

No demands have been made yet, so we're left to hope everyone's going to be okay, and to speculate about the hostage-taker's motives.

UPDATE, 4 hours in: The SWAT team is working to get the man to surrender himself, any hostages he's still holding, and to give up on his demand to speak personally to Hillary. The suspect is known to police and is apparently mentally ill; it's been reported he told his step-son to watch the news today.
