Mitt Romney - Bad American Tourist

Several days have passed since Republican Mitt Romney delivered his much-anticipated speech explaining how his religious faith would influence him as President. Many commentators have been justifiably upset by Romney's disdain for the secular tradition of government in the United States, and by his suspect interpretation of the separation of Church and State. I share that disgust. But with time to analyze the speech, I have found another reason to dismiss Romney - he might be the world's dumbest tourist.

In this excerpt from the speech he describes his travels:

"I have visited many of the magnificent cathedrals in Europe. They are so inspired ... so grand ... so empty. Raised up over generations, long ago, so many of the cathedrals now stand as the postcard backdrop to societies just too busy or too 'enlightened' to venture inside and kneel in prayer."

Hello! Romney! Did you ever think that maybe it's because you didn't visit the cathedrals on Sunday mornings? Just to let you in on something you may not know because you are Mormon, Catholic mass occurs generally (not always, generally) on Sundays.

I've been to some cathedrals in Europe, too. Yea, on Wednesday afternoon there are no more than 5 or 6 old ladies in there kneeling in prayer, surrounded by about 150 tourists. In the United States, I must have seen over 1000 churches in my life just in ordinary local travel. Most of these churches are not only empty, but the doors are completely shut and locked most of the time. I wish this meant that the United States has lost interest in religion, but all it means is that there is no service going on most of the time. For that matter, here in Los Angeles, where I live now, I have driven past the enormous Mormon Temple hundreds of times. Although I can't get within half a mile of the front door, I will still testify that I have never seen a single person on the grounds except some guys mowing the front lawn that's about the size of a small county in Utah. And that lawn worker is probably a so-called illegal Mexican immigrant. I guess Mormonism is an empty, dying faith.

I would expect this kind of comment from the current occupant of the White House, but before his election, he had never even traveled outside the US (except for Mexico). So at least Romney has been to Europe - I'll give him credit for that.
