Conyers Police Chief David Cathcart explains the program:
"If you leave packages in clear view in your car, then you might be providing an opportunity to a thief that can be avoided if you are just a little more carefull. Even if you put your packages in the car and think you're only going to be in another store for a few minutes, you're still at risk because it only takes a moment for someone to take advantage of a situation."
Programs like this rarely get publicity, either because good news doesn't sell or because they're well-intentioned but ridiculous. In this case, the yellow tickets seem nice enough, but wouldn't they just serve as flags for thieves looking for cars with unprotected packages? Do you think this is a good idea or silly?

1. Sounds like the cops have good intentions. But I would also think they have better things to do than play "nanny state" to people who are too foolish to lock their packages in their trunk.

2. I put things in the passenger compartment of my car because I feel the trunk is no place for things that need to stay clean and free from damage. The trunk is where I keep, the spare tire, tools, bottles of motor oil, transmission fluid and antifreeze. If your trunk is clean (and empty) enough to put everything from dry cleaning to Christmas presents, God bless you! I do try to cover or hide 'high-ticket' items like my laptop, PDA, digital camera MP3 player etc. but must do so in the passenger compartment. If the police really want to help people in this holiday season, they should set-up 'decoy' cars loaded with visible goods and bust those that try to steal them!
