In this video we explain the background to the Chris Matthews apology to Hillary Clinton, show the actual apology and then explain why it has much larger ramifications:
Maybe we helped to push him toward this apology with our commentary on AOL Newsbloggers as well (you can see and read our analysis of all of his negative comments toward Hillary Clinton here). I doubt it, but hey, we tried. And he wound up doing the right thing.

61. OK, Chris, I'm giving you another chance just to see if you have learned anything. TO BE FAIR, it's not just you, although you may be the LOUDEST!! The Press has really made a rock star out of Mr. Obama, and yes, Chris you have been outrageous. If you are working for Mr. O., then give up your free podium, and go work for him. Try to be more like your Sunday show - let other people talk. THanks.

62. GIVE ME A BREAK - HILLARY (NOR HER SUPPORTERS) CAN'T BE SO SENSITIVE THAT THEY CANNOT HANDLE CRITICISM - EVERY CANDIDATE HAS HAD TO ENDURE SOME TYPE OF MUD-SLINGING. IF STICKS AND STONES CAN CAVE HER IN - WHAT THE HELL IS SHE GOING TO DO WHEN DEALING WITH THE MALE LEADERS OF THE MIDDLE EAST WHO DO NOT THINK THAT WOMEN SHOULD EVEN BE IN POSITIONS OF POWER? WHY DOES CHRIS OWE ANYONE AN APOLOGY FOR AN OPINION IN THE FREE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA? THE CONSTITUTION GUARANTEES FREEDOM OF SPEECH PEOPLE - NO ONE CAN PLEASE EVERYONE ALL OF THE TIME - AND ANY OF YOU WHO SAY YOU DON'T CRITICIZE PEOPLE ARE LIARS - WHY SHOULD HILLARY BE ANY DIFFERENT? I FOR ONE DON'T WANT A CRY-BABY FOR PRESIDENT - IT SHOWS LACK OF FORTITUDE UNDER PRESSURE - AND I DON'T THINK HILLARY CAN HANDLE IT (BEING PRESIDENT).

63. It's not "criticism" that's being called into question, it's BIAS. There's a huge difference. And some sorts of criticism, like sexist or racist criticism, have no place in serious journalism.
Keep it for comedy and make it sharp and thought-provoking, or it's not even comedy. It's just stupid.
In Matthew's case, he apologized because the evidence of his personal bias completely obscuring objective analysis is too strong for him to do otherwise.
And the American public is actually intelligent enough to "analyze" the candidates without the pundits' help. What we need is for them to ask good questions and then broadcast/ print the answers.
And once in a while they could do some good, unbiased investigative journalism.
