John McCain won the Florida primary on Tuesday night on the strength of the Latino vote. He beat Romney 50-16 in that category and this helped to his 5 point win in this primary. Mitt Romney was vocal in his opposition to any sensible immigration plan, instead preferring tough talk about keeping people out of the country and sending them back. Well, guess who's being sent back now?
And this is a Republican primary in a state where most of the Latino voters are Cuban (who have more favorable immigration laws applied to them). Imagine what's going to happen to a Republican candidate in the general election? At least McCain was on the right side of a sensible immigration proposal in the Senate. For this, he has been scorned by the Republican pundits, talk show hosts and bloggers. But in reality, he is the Republican Party's only chance. If they send up a hater like Romney, they're going to get whooped in November.
We broke down the Florida results early last night and noticed how big the disparity in the Latino vote was in the exit polls:
Also, it's a pleasure to bid Rudy Giuliani goodbye. He was the most crazed Republican in the field with his consistent fear and war mongering. Huckabee might be even crazier, but Rudy was the most likely to start the next war and curtail more civil liberties. So, Florida let a little sunshine into the country by getting rid of the dark and ominous candidacy of Rudy Giuliani.

2. Hey Big Guy,
I have to disagree a little bit with you boss. I liked Rudy, I thought he was a good man. But, the numbers weren't there and he did the right thing.
If McCain has the numbers after Super Tuesday, he will be the Republican Party's candidate. And that Big Guy, has me looking at (wow, I can just barely say it) the Democrats.
Just between you and me boss, this old man may have to sit this one out.

3. Republicans will continue to shoot themselves in the foot with Latino voters. McCain will possibly do OK with Latino voters in other states, but where McCain is at odds is with the base of the GOP voters. But, interestingly, he did well in Florida without religious conservatives. And "super Tuesday" has many more secular states where religious folks do not dominate. This is the most interesting race in my lifetime.
I agree - good riddance to Rudy. Mike Huckabee is next - but Huckabee can always have a job. I am sure the Christian Broadcasting Network will hire him.

4. Latinos will not decide this election, Oprah decided this election in Iowa. Now can Obama and Company finish the job. Hillary already said, "No Woman is Illegal." She's all in. If Oprah can't find the right message, it's the Republicans election to lose again. National Security can be injected into our politics at any time. China is up to it's eyeballs in snow and ice. The Olympics could be in trouble. Latinos can't trump national security. They are a part of the problem. Should they get "Driver's licences?" This Nation is Sick!

7. Here's my view on immigration. If you think about it, businesses are taking advantage of illegals, because low U.S. wages are still better than what they make in their homelands.
When I was a kid in the 60s, the neighbor had a lawn service. For mowing, it was several white teenagers or college students pushing Lawn-Boys, and a supervisor who looked over to see if additional work might be needed (fertilizer, weed killer, etc.).
Now, it's often 2 Hispanics to a truck with riding mowers.
Why? Because adjusted for inflation, I would wager that the 2 Hispanics are paid less than if you had several college students.
The other problem is that many immigrants don't assimilate. Several years ago, I listened to a radio talk show host in Chicago go balistic. A reporter was interviewing a kid, about 10, speaking with a thick Chicago accent (dem, deese, and dose, rather than them, theese, and those). He was thrilled that "his" president was visiting Chicago. Was it George Bush? No, it was Vicente Fox.
Now, I'm part English, so I did once go over to the Drake Hotel in Chicago to see Prince Charles leave the hotel and get into his limo (a Jag, of course). Was he "my" future king? No, because my president was Ronald Reagan.
This is why Republicans get frustrated with the concept of rational immigration.
I get frustrated, when I go to McDonald's and Wendy's and have trouble understanding the person at the counter or working the window, because they have a thick Mexican accent.
My wife thinks our son should take Spanish in high school, not because she wants him to learn the culture or because Romance languages are pretty to hear, but because of the practical aspects.
The other problem for Republicans is the idea of a divided country. If we allow sensible immigration, and people coming here don't assimilate as European immigrants did, are we turning ourselves into another Canada. The French-speaking population in Canada don't seem themselves as Canadians, but rather displaced Frenchmen.
The same holds true in Belgium, with French and Flemish-speaking populations. Even in South Africa, there was some distrust between the whites descended from the English settler and the whites descended from Dutch settlers.
What's ironic is that the former senior pastor at my church had sympathy for a illegal immigrant with a native-born son. She had sought sanctuary in a small storefront Methodist church. Our associate paster is from England, and he told about the number of times he had to visit the U.S. Embassy in London to work out his visa issues.
The U.S. has promoted the idea that we are a nation of laws and not a nation governed by the whim of a leader. So, should people follow the law, even when it comes to getting into the country?
Besides, wasn't NAFTA supposed to send all of our good jobs down to Mexico? Of the three GM vehcles that have been my wife's primary vehicle, two of them were made in Mexico.
Kent at 1:13PM on Jan 30th 2008
8. Kent, the problem with the GM cars made in Mexico is that the dominicans will do the work for less than the mexicans themselves.

we're already there. We don't lead in health or education or quality of life or any of the things we were number one in before 1980 - we've slipped to third world status, we're not only broke but in debt to our enemies and I could go on for pages about corruption, beginning with the 32 arrests in the reagan administration on through gonzogate.
This is what unrestrained capitalism will do to a nation, and it's time for a sea change.
I've wondered if whoever gets the dem nomination would consider Bill Richardson as veep. that would probably cement the hispanic vote pretty quickly.
Clif Kuplen at 2:30PM on Jan 30th 2008
10. We're merging with Mexico anyway. Pretty soon the borders will be completely open. We are going the way of the European Union.
I don't see how Oprah manages to rally any more than the bon bon eating, Dr. Phil worshipping, crowd. Who would ever have thought that Oprah could influence a presidential election?
Don't underestimate the republicans. They've still got an October surprise or two up their sleeves. But the biggest advantage they have is that they will be running a middle-aged, white male for president.
A big chunk of the electorate get their news from Fux Noise and AM hate radio. They have no critical thinking skills and they pass their wacked out, spoon-fed opinions on to others, who are willing to believe anything.
The right wing propagandists know that all they have to do is attach the word, "liberal" to any concept.
When they suggest that Obama is a Muslim secret agent, waiting to take the Oval office and hand it over to the terrorists, dumb-shits on the right listen and believe. I even saw the FReeper class saying that "blacks" are just waiting to get their man in office so they can raid the treasury. Never mind that there is no money in the treasury.
When the propagandists say, "Hillary," the rest of the sentence doesn't matter. The right wing has been villifying the Clintons for so long that it is automatic. Just watch the new, "Cliton death lists" come out.
Let's not forget the power of tradition. This nation has never had anything other than white males in the Oval Office. This election might be known as the time a black man and a woman *almost* made it. Somehow history will turn that into a great moment and we'll say, "We almost made it and *someday* we will."
I must agree with Cecil Jones' assessment. This nation is sick. Another four years of republicans isn't going to make it any better.
Edwards was our best hope.

This is true. However, the blog is about Latinos and not illegal immigrants.
There are Americans with Latino heritage and there are Latinos who have become natrulized citizens of the United States of America. These Latinos have the right to vote.

Oh boy! Okay, let's just see if we can teach you something in one little post. 12 million illegal immigrants does not equal 12 million mexicans. Unfortunately our illegal immigration problem is with citizens from all OVER THE WORLD! The Latino Vote does not mean a vote from illegals.
And as for backwards, broken and last but not least.... and this is a good one, CORRUPT???
Hellllllllllooooooooooo..... where have you been for the past 8 years????
Patty at 7:04PM on Jan 30th 2008
14. When my family came to the United States in the late 50’s they did it the legal way.
When my father requested permanent residents, he had to demonstrate that he had a minimum of $5000, 00 in the bank, a place to live and work. Once he passed all the requirements and before the visa was granted, he had to swear allegiance to this country. After working very hard for many years my father and my mother became American citizens.
In my opinion, this problem will never go away, if we do not go after the employers that continue to hire illegal immigrants. I do not care if the politician is a democrat or a republican; the fact is they are not doing their job when it comes to this serious issue.
Patty at 7:04PM on Jan 30th 2008
15. Cenk-you see Rudy as one most likely to start a war. His only track record for wars is the one he had with his wife.
Hillary is the one you should worry about. With her prior experience in White House, the Clinton were involved in far more conflicts than Rudy
1-Invasion of Haiti-stopped at last minute because of demonstrations at docking area, Troop ship turned around.
2-Somalia-changed from giving aid to military action of hunting down warloads
3-76 days of Bombing in Balkans.
4-Putting troops in Balkans without Congress vote as Congress had ask for chance to vote on it first
5-Iraq Bombing over dispute weapons inspectors and WMD.
6-Bombing of Afgan.
Hillary has far greater record of use of Military force than Rudy, so worry Cenk is misplaced.
