Ronald Reagan cut and ran from Beirut. Ronald Reagan negotiated with the Evil Empire. Ronald Reagan sold arms to Iran! Ronald Reagan raised taxes eleven times. Ronald Reagan was the one who gave illegal immigrants amnesty in the first place!
Reagan would be laughed out of the Republican primaries now. They'd call him a softie lib. God knows what Ann Coulter would call him. Yet these same Republicans treat him like a demi-god. You know why? Because they have no other Republican presidents they can be proud of. Who else are they going to praise? Richard Nixon? George W. Bush?
I think they should be proud of George H. W. Bush for many reasons, but of course they hate him because he raised taxes and didn't invade Iraq. Present day conservatives are an embarrassment. They are the most ideologically rigid party I have ever seen. Now compare them to the Democrats running:

1. Actually, Ronald Reagan was a Liberal. That is, until he dumped his first wife for Nancy. Then after leaving his wife, he left his party and became a Conservative Republican.
Once that was done, and he became the Governor of California he ruined the educational system in California!

2. Reagan was one of the worst presidents in American history. The blog is absolutely right. Repubs have made a demi-god of him because all other recent republican presidents are actually worse. Hard to believe that's possible. There have only been two good republican presidents in history - Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Reagan acted presidential because he was an actor, the best performance he ever gave. All his other acting roles, like his presidency, were worthless.

3. When Lincoln was president, the party was progressive. By the 1880's the robber barons had taken over the party and controlled it to suit their needs.
Teddy was a progressive and a trust buster, nothing like current republicans. They've all been fascist since Reagan. it's an easy slip down the slope - deregulate business and let them merge until they're gigantic and then they control government by lobby - badabing! ronald mussolini and all the l'il duces that came after him. clinton was best, but he was still part of the problem. It's solution time.

4. Tonight on "The McLaughlin Group" Pat Buchanan was laughing about Democrats supposedly comparing Obama to JKF, Camelot, etc.
Hey, at least Demcorats are not putting JKF into TV ads..John McCain has a new ad in which he all but says he is the new Ronald Reagan. Reagan's name flashes over and over..what, McCain cannot run on his own record and has to invoke a dead president?
How about a deal? Republicans let Ronald Reagan rest in peace and Demcorats do the same about John Kennedy.

5. Cenk: You forgot that Reagan also banned the production of Machine Guns for private ownership.
I have a good one for you guys: Adolph Hitler was a Democrat.
Hitler embraced such governmental measures as Public (i.e., Government) Schooling, National Health Care, public works, national service, a national youth corps, conscription, Government Spending to achieve “Full Employment”, Government-Business partnerships, Wage and Price controls and Government Regulation of Private Businesses among other things.
Does any of this sound familiar anyone? Is this not the "Bread and Butter" of the Democratic Party agenda? Scary isn't it!!!!!!!

6. Thank you for giving me a list I can now throw in every neo-con's face when they venerate Reagan. I could seriously kiss you for that.
And thank you for mentioning George Bush Sr. As a member of the gay community, my whole extended family embraces me when I tally off the list of Reagan's offenses against us, but I'm the elephant in the room when I defend George H.W. Bush who, gee, was only the first president to invite gay rights groups to visit the White House (when he signed the Hate Crimes Statistics Act in 1990). And meanwhile six years later, Clinton -- a president equally venerated by both my gay and liberal friends -- stabbed us in the back with the Defense of Marriage Act.

7. Say what you want about Regan, I was in the Navy buring the Carter yearswhen there werent enough sailors to man ships ,the pay wasnt worth talking about and seems there were all those hostages in Iran. Then here comes Regan , the way I remember it ,Iran released the hostages on the day Regan was sworn in as president . Then as I remember it he gave the Military a 15 percent raise across the board and the 600 ship Navy and gave Americans something to be proud of .. yeah , he wasnt perfect as a president but compared to Carter or that good'ol lying pervert Bill Clinton... I'll take Regan anyday... Nuff said Woodrow

8. I can't believe how the repubs are all claiming to be clones of RR. He was a disaster from what I remember. He gave massive tax breaks to the rich and corporate america, cut social spending and sabre rattled with Russia and wasted trillions on his star wars plan of missile defense. The hero in his era was Gorbachov. He proposed military cuts on both sides and actually proposed to eliminate all nuclear weapons which Ron actually agreed to until he spoke to his advisers and they told him he could not. He was nothing more than a Bush with a better speaking manner. Time will probably make this bush look good, I'm afraid. What history records is a glossed over account which slightly resembles the truth.

9. Not surprising to see the left want to claim Reagan (1 of the country's greatest) as one of their own.
Compared to the history of liberal presidents?? It's no wonder they shun their own, and seek to embrace true greatness.
Edge at 10:13AM on Feb 2nd 2008
10. It is not surprising to see liberals try and embrace Reagan, considering the track record of liberal presidents.
Also amusing to see the rocket scientists at Scare America use "party" and "Ideology" as identical, interchangeable terms. psss. They arent! Of couse, considering they seem to imply the evil empire was a rogue, terrorist organization, we cant expect too much from them now, can we?
Of course, the flip side to this is that JFK would be a supply-siding Neo-con who committed pre-emptive acts of war against countries that never attacked us, and he didnt have UN permission (gasp)!

11. Rick: Gorbachev this!!!
Liberals quislings will never admit that Ronald Reagan was responsible for the fall of the Soviet Union. Doing so would mean that they'd have simultaneously admitted they were wrong.
The Cold War was not a bipartisan affair. The Left Wing Democrats (save for "Scoop" Jackson) fought every effort Ronald Reagan and Republicans made to weaken the Soviet Union. They publicly mocked Reagan, many as Kennedy claimed he was more dangerous than the Soviet Union, and Liberals shunned the whole idea of winning the Cold War.
(In May 1983, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-MA) directed friend and fellow Senator John Tunney to meet with the Soviet KGB with a tantalizing message. Tunney was to tell the KGB to alert Soviet Communist Party General Secretary Yuri Andropov that Kennedy believed then President Ronald Reagan was a threat, possibly a military one, to the Soviet Union. Because of his worry over Reagan’s intentions, Senator Kennedy offered to Andropov, through Tunney, to coordinate American media with the aim of undermining President Reagan with the electorate. In short, an American Senator collaborated with our arch foe in the Cold War to undermine a sitting President.): by Grove City College political science professor Dr. Paul Kengor.

Because he was not! Communism was imploding all by itself. Ronald Reagan was at the right place at the right time. "Mr. Gorbachev tear down that wall"?? It does make for good drama and a good story.

13. Raygun responsible for the fall of the USSR? Yeah right. That's the biggest lie the right has propogated for years. Raygun is way down on the list of those responsible for the demise of the USSR. John Paul II, Lech Walesa, Margaret Thatcher, Mikail Gorbachev, Boris Yeltskin, and Bush I,to name just a few, were far more responsible for the demise of the USSR than Raygun. Must Repubs are so stupid they actually believe Raygun was president when the USSR collapsed. Bush I was president you repub idiots. Yet most of them give Bush I no credit. Raygun has aircraft carriers and airports named after him. He is deserving of a sewer system or two, or maybe a water purification plant, definitely rolls of toilet paper with him image. But aircraft carriers-give me a break. Raygun's list of economic and military screw ups would fill several volumes. Instead, Raygun myth creators lie about his involvement in the demise of the USSR. Give me a break. The man was an actor, and a lousy one at that, except when he got the role as president. Only decent acting job he ever did-but it was an act. As a president, he was a failure.

The geniuses of Renaldus Magnus is that he helped speed up the process and seal the deal.
Now, can you say "Hyper-Inflation".
Hyper-Inflation or Bankruptcy doom any society whenever Politicians teach the public to vote themselves benefits from the Treasury. Refer to Post #5 for some fine examples.

15. Better examples are fat cat, corrupt repub businessmen whose donations buy them fat contracts at public expense. Both defense and public works contracts which do little except line the pockets of repub cronies. What better example do we need than the out of control spending of the past several years under a repub president and congress. No one robs the treasury better than repubs.
