Paczki Day 2008
Watch and enjoy. (And to all you Paczki know-it-alls, I acknowledge that I lapsed a couple of times and used "paczki" as a singular when it's plural. My bad.)
Can you recommend other ethnic doughnuts? We want to hear all about them!

31. The Hungarian equivalent of pączki are called fa'nk. They're basically the same, and also eaten just before Lent. By the way, In Poland itself, it's not Fat Tuesday that's celebrated with pączki and other sweets, but Tłusty Czwartek--Fat Thursday. It gives you almost a whole week to eat up the good stuff before Ash Wednesday. The whole "carnival" season in Poland is celebrated with dancing, dressing up in wild costumes, and generally whooping it up. Traditionally, there would be no parties or dancing again until after Easter Sunday. That's when another tradition comes in. Depending on the area of Poland, on the Monday after Easter, young dudes throw buckets of water on the eligible girls. In some regions, the girls reciprocate on Tuesday, or instead of water, they may whip each other with pussywillows. In Hungary, the tradition is a little more subdued--guys spray perfume on the girls, asking permission first. Buffalo, New York is headquarters for "Wet Monday" or "Smigus Dingus" day. There are parties all day long, and watch out for the water canons.

32. ah.clem......
the fastnachts (or as we call them- fuzznuts)
come prepared two ways...
store bought variety is most like a heavy, greasy doughball covered with your choice of powdered sugar, granulated sugar, glaze, or plain grease!
homemade variety is a very dense donught, not greasy, which I then place in a bag and cover with as much powdered sugar as possible-try not to sneeze whilst eating.
sorry to say we have no polish diversity here, so the import box was savoured!
would'nt an absinthe-filled paczki be more of a St Patty's day delight?

45. Clif and Gaby:
I think "Nazdrowie" might be more appropriate.
Jean: Sounds like you Paczki hasn't been filled with sweet jellies of late.
Blayze: I haven't tried the modern version of Absinthe; (I think it might be a lot of hype).
However, if you are interested in an Old World drink, reputed to possess magical powers, try
"Strega."
