Sex Scandal at the New York Times
"Waves of anxiety have swept through Times staffers who have been concerned about Krugman routinely showing up by Keller's side. Convinced that the relationship had become romantic, some senior staff at the paper have been trying to keep the two apart. These staffers, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said they warned Keller not to keep his office door closed especially when Krugman was inside.
"Concerns that Krugman's strong support for the Democrats have shaped New York Times coverage of the upcoming election underscore a paradox. The newspaper is widely suspected of tailoring its news coverage to support its political ideology--'all the news that fits'--even though the Times likes to portray itself as objective: 'all the news that's fit to print.'
"Both Keller and Krugman have denied the allegations although such denials are to be expected in such situations. Now some staffers are worried that Keller's coverage of the election may be influenced by his feelings for Krugman. 'We're worried that Krugman is threatening to break it off,' one reporter noted, 'if Keller doesn't give favorable treatment to his candidate and stick it to the Republicans.'"
Incredible? Absurd? Actually, this fictitious article is very, very similar to the actual article that the New York Times ran on John McCain. The key phrases in my made-up account are directly lifted from the Times' actual account. In that story, the newspaper alleged that McCain was having an affair with a 40-year-old lobbyist, naming her as Vicki Iseman. The Times also suggested that McCain gave special treatment to Iseman's clients.
What evidence that the newspaper produce for these explosive allegations? None, and this is after months of investigation by a whole team of reporters. It cited unnamed McCain staffers who said they had become concerned about appearances of impropriety. (None alleged any actual impropriety.) It cited two former McCain staffers who were by their own admission disenchanted with McCain, although even they refused to give their names.
Stung by criticism that followed this irresponsible piece, Keller told the public editor of The Times, "If the point of the story was to allege that McCain had an affair with a lobbyist, we'd have owed readers more compelling evidence than the conviction of senior staff members. But that was not the point of the story. The point of the story was that his close aides felt the relationship constituted reckless behavior and feared it would ruin his career."
I can testify from personal experience that this sort of weasel-behavior is entirely in keeping with the way the New York Times does business. Note that in the episode that follows I am giving actual names and not citing any anonymous sources.
Several years ago one of the paper's leading reporters Fox Butterfield did an article on The Dartmouth Review, which I edited as an undergraduate in the early 1980s. Seeking to discredit me, Butterfield quoted me as having written in the paper, "The question is not whether women should be educated at Dartmouth. The question is whether women should be educated at all."
A witty line, perhaps, only I didn't write it. The line was actually written by another student, Keeney Jones. When I called Butterfield to point this out, the man insisted, "No, you wrote it." So I demanded, "Where did I write it?" Butterfield pointed out that I had written an article about the Dartmouth Review in another magazine where I had quoted the line. I protested, "But I was merely citing controversial lines that had appeared in the student paper. How can you say I wrote that line when I made it very clear that Jones wrote it?"
To this Butterfield responded, "But by quoting it you have made it your line." I was dumbstruck. The best I could say to him was, "And I guess that since you have now quoted the line yourself, it has now become your line." The important point here is that we are dealing not with some dimwit but with a Pulitzer-prize winning reporter for America's leading newspaper. Yet apparently such dishonesty is the way they operate at the Times.
Some critics have been calling for Keller to be fired but I suspect that a much wider fumigation is required to clean house over there. The Times has long become a liberal rag and as incidents like these pile up, more and more people will recognize that the New York Times is no longer the great newspaper it once was.

I couldn't care less if 2 men at the NY Times were having an affair, and neither would anyone there.
By the way, McCain is a known womanizer, and I would not be surprised if he did have an affair. But who cares? Not dems. Only repubs get worked up over that shit.

17. NY Times needs to be cleaned out, it has gone from a leading News paper, to a newspaper who cannot be trusted with a readership that is falling lower and lower every year. The Press over seas no longer looks at the NY Times as a premier newspaper. The NY Post has replaced the Times as the top newspaper in NY.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Bollywood actress Mallika Sherawat will play an ascetic who befriends Jesus of Nazareth in a U.S. film that revolves around a legend that he visited India.
Filmmaker Drew Heriot's "The Aquarian Gospel" is about Jesus's life between the ages of 13 and 30, a period not documented in the Gospels when legend has it
*** Jesus traveled through India, Tibet and Persia. ****
The $15-million film is set for release in 2009.
"In light of all the recent ancient scriptural discoveries, there is no better time for a film project," Heriot said. "There are plenty of books about the subject, and this will be the first narrative feature about it."
____________
Got the picture?
If you want to invent a story about Jesus going to India, no eyewitness is going to show up on "Oprah" to say it never happened.
If Dinesh had the proper integrity, he would have put FICTION at the top of his column.

I think you're missing the point.
Read the headline. Skim the first four paragraphs of Dinesh's inventive fiction.
A casual reader might NOT pick up that it's FICTION.
a real journalist, or scholar, NEVER does this.
Dinesh is a child pretending to be an adult.

Loved the article and you're 100% right on this one. The hypocrisy on the left is amazing.

21. William Hayes:
You're missing the point of Dinesh's article. Once Dinesh demonstrates the absurdity of what has been done (by doing it in a context that liberals would agree with), he then points out that this is what the NY Times did in the McCain story. Pretty effective.

Reply to: You're missing the point of Dinesh's article. .
__________
I didn't miss it.
What I said was, he used a METHOD that no reputable journalist would ever use.
When you read the headline, there's no indication that his story is ONLY PRETEND.
When you go to someone else's blog, all you see under Dinesh's name is "Sex Scandal at the NY Times."
Dinesh is a child. He acts like a child. Only a child writes a PHONY article and posts it in a place where people might think it is real.
Just because he thinks the New York Times did it... is no excuse for Dinesh to do it.
If O.J. Simpson killed his ex-wife, does that make it OK for me to kill my ex-wife?
Dinesh doesn't understand why journalists have standards. i do.

24. Why should the NYT be any better than Fox News and Propaganda? Fox gets caught in outright lies all the time, and NEVER FIRES ANYONE.
Here there was a story at least. McCain, of the Keating Five, ie tainted with lobbying sleeze, again is caught playing the lobbying game ( private jets, lets to help get action ), and he is conducting himself in a very dubious manner with the female lobbyist.
Who is the hypocrite? McCain.
And he has had an affair before. He married his second wife one month after the divorce was final for his first wife.
The Neo Cons are just upset because their candidate only received about 1/3 of the gop vote, is not raising much money, and now is trying to cheat on the public financing of his campaign.
McCain will never win the independent vote with his stay in iraq 100 years positon, plus his pro preferenial treatment for Hispanic illegals position.
McCain's Hispanic Outreach person was a Cabinet member in Mexico's Vicente Fox's government and is openly for reconquest of Southwest USA. Some of his comments.
“I never knew the border as a limitation; I’d be delighted if all of us could come and go between these two marvelous countries.”
“We have recognized that the Mexican population is 100 million in Mexico and 23 million who live in the United States…We are a united nation.”
Mexican immigrants “are going to keep one foot in Mexico and are not going to assimilate.”
“We are betting that the Mexican population in the United States …will think Mexico first.”
.........
So the Neo Cons are in a panic. They cannot afford any more of the dirt to surface on McCain. But it will. He has been in office for so long theee is bound to be more to come.
It looks like it is going to be the Neo Cons worst nightmare - Obama. Obama who was right from the start on Iraq. Obama who is ready to clean house on Nafta. Obama who is fresh, with new ideas, and is charismatic, a real leader.
So we need to keep an eye on Diebold and also on Rove and his voting rights lawsuits, or other frivolous lawsuits intended to tilt the election.
cdnbirch at 3:42AM on Feb 25th 2008
25. CDNBirch - Obama doesn't have any new ideas. Socialism and fascism have been around for quite a while. And if you liked Bush's spendfest, you'll love Obama's efforts to have the government virtually run our lives. This man is rated the most Liberal Senator in the Democrat Party.
Whatever problem we have, he believes the government can fix it. Health care. Education. "Global Warming". You name it. And we're going to have Patriotism Police, who will decide which corporations are pro American. I can't wait.
Get ready for the worker's paradise, baby. OBama is just a happenin guy and he's "bright and articulate" and oh, so much better than that evil tyrant, GW Bush, that we'll buy just about anything he sells us. Including government intervention in our lives from cradle to grave.
Freedom. Enjoy it while you can, because we won't be seeing much of it again for a while.

27. Dinesh...I'm gonna do you a favor here...
Since you've tapped into this rather stale story about McCain and his hot lobbyist friend only about three days too late, I can fairly conclude that you've run out of fresh ideas.
I mean, as a blogger myself, I can understand that mental block. EVERY blogger eventually runs out of fresh ideas now and again. Tragically, though, you had a fresh idea staring you in the face last night and you absolutely missed it!
So, as I've said, I'm gonna do you a favor.
Dinesh, this time next year you should try sticking to what you do best. This time next year, try writing a piece about the decadent Hollywood liberals and their sinful worship of a golden idol (Oscar).
On second thought, you apparently don't care how stale a story is, do you? You'll go to press regardless! That means you have, heck, I don't know...maybe three or four weeks to get this year's post about Hollywood's false idol worship onto your blog?
I can't wait to read it!
(I can't believe that this program's spell-check software doesn't flag "gonna" as a misspelled word.)

same crass leftist drivel. but my oh my if the truth came out that hillary was in fact a witch, the right would be lambasted and called for hate-mongering. when in reality and FACT the left does not tolerate anything but agreement. this country has truly drifted away from what made it great. the left will be the end of our country. it has no morals and no will and no resolve except to permeate our society with perversions of every kind. and if decent people do not agree they are branded as neo-cons,hate-mongers,homo-phobic,etc. the democratic left extremist should be shown for what they are..DEMONCRATS!!! With HILLARY THE HUN AT THE HEALM!!!

30. brian,
You do realize that not all democrats are blindly following Hitlery, right? Most democrats that I know actually review the candidates and vote for who fits their views best that will most benefit our country. Instead of, you know, doing what we're told to do and following -human beings- with blind faith. I'm guessing you're pro-war? After all, what's a few thousand innocent deaths for the betterment of our economy. If I didn't know better, I'd say Christians were far more violent than CHRIST would be.
My favorite bumper sticker this week: Who would JESUS bomb?
