How Obama Got His Halo
What's going on here? There are a lot of theories about Obama's success, yet two of the main ones seem to have escaped notice. First, Obama is enjoying African American immunity. This idea that if you are a black person you are above criticism is especially strong among liberal Democrats. These are the people, after all, who invented political correctness. From this point of view, if a black man is reasonably articulate his statements have to be treated as Shakespearean genius. If he seems comparatively decent he must be celebrated as a paragon of humanity. The slightest criticism of such an individual is seen as harsh, carping, unfair. Thus when the Clintons quite reasonably disputed Obama's repeated invocations of Martin Luther King, pointing out that it took presidential action to give policy significance to some of King's ideas, the liberal genuflection camp expressed immediate outrage. How dare Hillary state obvious facts when those facts might tarnish Obama's moral and political halo?
By the way this African American immunity won't completely insulate Obama in the general election. If he gets the nomination the level of scrutiny will certainly increase. Even the lapdogs in the media are going to have to start asking some tough questions. And Republicans aren't terrified of criticizing a political figure just because he happens to be black.
A second factor behind Obama's success is this. A majority of Democratic voters, and even some leading figures in the party, seem to have quietly figured out that Republicans were right all along about the Clintons. For years no Democrat could bring himself to admit this. Democrats were in full partisan mode, defending the Clintons, covering up for their shameful deeds, putting on a straight face while mouthing the Clinton lies in public. But all of this seems to have left an unpalatable taste in the Democratic mouth. Secretly, Democrats know that this is a pair of self-serving opportunists who will do anything, even destroy the Democratic party, in order to have power. David Geffen in his early endorsement of Obama blurted out a widely-held sentiment when he said that while lying may come naturally to politicians, the Clintons have taken prevarication and dissembling to a whole new level.
Disgusted with the Clintons, and fearful of bringing this dysfunctional couple back into the Oval Office, Democrats now have an alternative. Backing Obama not only makes Democrats feel cool, it also makes them feel clean.
As a Republican, I confess I'm enjoying Hillary's political frustration. She can't blame this one on the "vast right wing conspiracy."

31. "His middle name? Even for D'Souza, this is below the belt! Foreign policy experience? Take a look at the experience of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt (all of whom won wars) Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and George W. Bush. BUSH?? Oh my GOODD!!!"
Washington was a general, not a president during the war; different skills are required for each position. Also, he had experience in the French and Indian Wars and he had skilled lieutenants in Hamilton, von Steuben, Lafayette, and even Arnold before he turned to the British.
First, the Civil War was a domestic war, not a foreign one. Furthermore, Lincoln may have launched the Proclamation and put Grant in command, but before that he made too many demands of his generals, even threatening to fire George "Slow Trot" Thomas, commander of the army of Chattanooga. Thomas continued telling Lincoln that he would attack Bragg's lines when ready but Lincoln pressed him, even sending a general to replace Thomas two days before Thomas attacked. The victory at Chattanooga turned the tide of the Western war almost as much as Vicksburg, and Lincoln was going to fire one of his most competent generals, a man he knew to be of sound judgement, right before it happened. Lincoln's pressuring of Ambrose Burnside led to the fiasco at Fredericksburg, the most lopsided defeat in the Civil War. It wasn't until he put Grant in command that good things began to consistently happen.
FDR's economic policies led to our current practice of subsidizing our farmers beyond reason, which causes an increase in food prices, costs our government money, and is the major reson the third world hates us. FDR kowtowed to Stalin at Yalta, completely ignoring Churchill's advice, just so the Soviets would have less influence in the United Nations. He even gave a serious interview to the Associated Press where he claimed that Stalin's upbringing as a Christian schoolboy would influence his conduct. (Must have been a school run by the ghost of Torquemada.) Not to mention that he had some of the best generals in US history, from Eisenhower to Patton to Nimitz to McArthur to Marshall, to help him out. And he had a numerical and industrial advatange over Hitler and Japan.
Truman was awesome, though his containment policy would cause many US blunders (see Latin America, Afghanistan, Vietnam). But he was actually a good president.
WHAAAT war did JFK win!!!!!? Cuban Missile Crisis? I go to my room, I clean up my mess that I made, and nobody calls me a hero and sends me flowers!
I don't think I have to say anything about Bush...
The point is that presidents in the age of globalization need some degree of foreign experience. And Obama simply does not have it. At least McCain and Hillary know the global stage. Sorry.

32. Thanks for the list, Strados. There are more, but you got the gist of it.
I'm with you, Lorelei, DD hasn't the faintest idea of Democratic thinking regarding the Clintons.
I'd be fine with Hilary as president. I think she would do a good job: I believe that there is too much anti-Hilary sentiment and misogynation out there and she might lose the election. It's a sad fact that women are still considered second class citizens in this country. There have been numerous female heads of state.
Here's hoping that racism won't hurt Barack too much, not to mention the lies that are circulating about him.
I still remember the anti-catholic sentiment and the cries that JFK was too inexperienced for the job.
Here's what a good president does: he or she LEADS. And finds brilliant people to have around him or her. That's what JFK did.

34. No, Hillary cannot blame this on a conspiracy. But she can blame it on a stupid American public - as stupid as Jay Leno's late night Jaywalkers!!
At least they have learnt one thing - Obama ain't Osama....!! Dumb....dumb...dumb....!!

35. His name is Dinesh. His experience in reasoning is virtually nil, and it shows. Most of his statements border on the ridiculous. No man manages to say nothing with such arrogance. And yet, for all his evident weaknesses, Dinesh has become virtually interminable. The frustration in the Atheist camp is palpable as they indignantly witness the asshole status to the Brown Apologist from India.

36. The race card gets old. I wouldn't vote for Obama just because he's black. Just like I wouldn't vote for anyone because of their skin color. It's all about bread and butter. Whoever here that has worked a day in their lives would agree that at the end of the day. Life and death is based on green. That green dollar decides if I get healthcare, If I sleep in the streets or eat a hot meal. Black or white has nothing to do with it. I guess only minorities have been losing their homes, and their white counterparts aren't. American people are jerks. They would rather vote for someone that has is gonna lead them into oblivion that reading the hand writing on the wall.

37. Disgusted with the Clintons, and fearful of bringing this dysfunctional couple back into the Oval Office, Democrats now have an alternative.
------------------------------
Well, I will give DD this, that the Clintons, in my opinion, are consummate liars. I do not respect them, nor do I like them, because of this.
HOWEVER
They are still INFINITELY PREFERABLE to ANY republican alternative.
They may be liars, but they're not FUCKING EVIL.
The republicans are. Their lies kill. They don't care if they country burns to the ground, as long as they get their slice. And McCain has hitched his wagon to the neocon train. He's Bush Lite.
The neocons have driven this country into the ground. I'd vote for Peewee Herman over any republican in the game right now.
But I don't have to. I have Obama. Obama INSPIRES. It's been a long time since we've had that. He's great. Go Obama. All the way.

38. Obama is still not a Muslim.
I don't understand why that is so bloody difficult for people to understand. Are the people still buying into that lie the same people whose literacy qualifies them for nothing more than a garden-variety coloring book?
It's a shame we can't discuss reality, Dinesh. It's a shame you can not confront the truth of the man's character without having to consistently fabricate such libelous nonsense.
Personally, I have a great many reasons not to like any of the candidates; however, rather than engage is such duplicitous and childish tactics such as you have continually done to the betrayal of your education, your maturity, and even your status as an American citizen, I base my appraisals upon the provable facts. To do otherwise is nothing more than the sort of intellectual dishonesty we'd associate with a worthless tabloid rag. It's embarrassing you're not above that, Dinesh. Then again, it's nice to know there's a place out there for ridiculously noisy children, isn't it?
Dan at 1:51PM on Feb 26th 2008
39. The Manchurian Candidate theories have plausible deniability -- probably because they're simply fabrications by jingoists with deep-seated prejudices for all exo-"American" influences (we have a LOT of those people). Obama swiftboaters have sabotaged their own credibility with their hyperdramatic evil overtones. I don't know who to believe, but it's easy to tell who not to believe. Obama is not Muslim, though I wouldn't care if he was, as long as his reason is stronger than his religion.

40. Well, at least I can thank DD for motivating me to contribute to Barack's campaign.
Thanks, DD.

41. hhmmm, his lack of experience is a liability.....??....
Why is it that everybody hates politicians, they hate congress especially, and they disapprove of the job congress is doing....but when those same people choose a president, their most important criterion is how much time they have logged as a politician/congressman.
allrightythen....

42. You continue to take yellow journalism to a new low. You just can't seem to stand it unless you insult at least one large stereotype per blog, with poor freshman logic to do so. How very ordinary of you, DD. How very, very ordinary. You have benefitted from the dumbing down of the American education system.

Dinesh, if the General Election were held right now, Obama would destroy McCain. Your party knows this, and you don't know what to do.
You also realize, that as time goes on, and Obama gets more exposure, especially with Republicans, it will only get worse.
Experience? Corruption. He's not corrupt. He doesn't do it the way you guys have done it for the last 30-40 years.
It's actually amusing watching all of this. The panic is starting to settle in. None of you jerks thought he had a shot in the beginning. Well Dinesh, you guys are getting what you created. You're screwed.
You have absolutely nothing on this guy, and anything there would have been on him, he's come clean on.
This makes me look good. I told my wife about him 4 years ago. I said, "this is what we need" to be the America we invision. I'm so sick of the corruption. I'm so sick of our Government doing it doggystyle with other Governments.
The only way he doesn't win this, is if he doesn't survive the election.

44. D'Souza says, "His middle name is Hussein. His experience in foreign policy is virtually nil, and it shows. Some of his policy statements border on the ridiculous. No man manages to say nothing with such aplomb. And yet, for all his evident weaknesses..."
Let's reverse these 'accusations'.
"No man manages to say nothing with such aplomb."
Okay, that is debatable, fine.
"Some of his policy statements border on the ridiculous."
Sure, we could argue that!
"His experience in foreign policy is virtually nil, and it shows."
Hey, there's something to think about, hmm.
"His middle name is Hussein."
Yea, as if that Saddam guy wouldn't have been half bad, except he had an 'evil' last name!
"And yet, for all his evident weaknesses..."
Having the middle name 'Hussein' might be an evident weakness if you are trying not to be bullied on the school playground, but playground bullies are not trying to be fair, they are trying to be bullies! That is a 'bad' thing.(write that down)
Poor Dinesh D'Souza might as well have written a confession that he is nothing but a cyber-playground bully.
Of course only an idiot could avoid noticing that his supporters are all bullies. brian, Gassett, (I'll pray for you)Rita, DENA and all his sock-puppets arguing the exact same philosophical minutea.
