In the 1950's, at the height of the Red Scare, people would be asked "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" Now, we have the Green Scare where even presidential candidates are asked, "Are you now or have you ever been a Muslim?"
Barack Obama has been asked this question multiple times throughout the campaign (you can see 60 Minutes asking him this question in the video below). For the record, he isn't. He's a good Christian (as opposed to a bad Muslim, I suppose). But what if he was Muslim? Well, that would automatically disqualify him, wouldn't it? The sad thing is that there's no question that it would.
Americans might vote for a woman or a black candidate, but a Muslim is out of the question. Not even close. In fact, it's now considered a smear to call a candidate a Muslim. I don't know if people know this, but Muslim-Americans are just as American as Christian-Americans. I know that seems ridiculous, come on, they're Muslim! But no, if you check the constitution, amazingly enough, all Americans are in fact supposed to be equal.
So, why am I so animated by this? Wait a minute, am I now or have I ever been a Muslim?!
I better answer those charges before you take my opinion on this seriously. What if I'm a closet Muslim trying to infiltrate the United States? You know there are real Muslims who are trying to undermine this country. We have to be careful. They're a threat to our way of life. Just like those communists were ... oh yeah.

16. Dave (#15) - Good point. What is appropriate behavior when you are jumpy?

17. Okane, you freaking idiot! You said you voted for Obama. Obama is a democrat. You said the democrats are the racist party. According to your own definitions, you voted for a racist from a racist party.
Yours is the weakest attempt at diversion that I have seen in a long time.
You should be so embarrassed that even you should admit that you really deserve the appellation, "Insne Okane."

18. Cenk Uygur is the whiniest clown on the Internet / WWW.
Cenk, do you think perhaps Americans mistrust Muslims because the root tenet of Islam is "everyone must convert to Islam or die?" Or that just about every Islamic nation on the planet has expressed a hatred of the U.S. and it's citizens? Or maybe the sight of Palestinians dancing in the streets after 9-11 plays a role.
As usual Democrats/Liberals blame the U.S. for the nefarious actions of others. To loons such as Cenk the U.S. is to blame for 9-11, every other attack on it's interests around the world and the murder of it's citizens.
Cenk, people such as you are indeed a threat to the U.S. and you, as well as any person who is joyful over the deaths of Americans, should be looked at by U.S. intelligence agencies.

19. "No, many Muslims are Muslims first and American second" -- Jay at 3:52PM
And I would say that there are millions of Americans who have proven, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that they are Christians first, and Moral Americans second.
Christians in this country have long used Christ's name to bless their personal evils. AMERICAN CHURCHES and Christians campaigned for the righteousness of enslaving human beings (well only blacks). They were against rights for women. They were against integration. They were against interracial marraiges. They stand against equality for gays. They have a millenium of history of spitting on human rights, attacking science and knowledge that benefit mankind and holding our nation hostage in ignorance and hatred.
Way too many Christians in this nation are christians NOT Americans. And for the same reasons you say we should worry about Muslim-Americans, we should be afraid of and see the Christians like Huckabee, Romney and Bush as the threat to this country which was founded by men who personally believed in atheism. Many of the founders of this country (Jefferson, Franklin, Adams) mocked churches and their hold over people. They understood the desperate need for separation of church and state.

Re 12 and 13: Actually gentlemen I am a Christian Armenian American and I know a hell of a lot more about Turks than you do, especially Muslim ones. Read a little, boys, history didn't start the day you were born. Liberal smartass answers are not enough.
Have a good day. Maybe you can go to the library and look up the Armenian Genocide.
IRONBLUEEYES at 10:51AM on Mar 9th 2008
21. RoyalElf - Your revisionist version of history is a desperate attempt to change the subject from Islamic Radical barbarism to the supposed shortcomings of Christianity. And you've provided no specific examples of "Christian racism".
As a matter of fact, William Wilberforce, a British Christian, spent much of his life battling slavery as member of Parliement. Many Christians were active in the abolition movement in America. And many of the Founders were believers in Christ, or at least acknowledged the importance of the Christian faith as a civilizing influence on America.
To shamelessly promulgate the notion that all these men were Deists or Atheists ignores many of the words of faith they left behind and is simply wishful secularist politically-correct thinking which has no basis in fact or history.

22. Shame on me, Dumb Conservative!!!!!!!
Paul Sparcello at 4:04PM on Mar 5th 2008
Amazing no one else could have possibly said it best. In deed Paul, you are a dumb conservative. In fact, not only are you dumb and sarcastic, you are the personification of what is known around the world as “the ugly America”.
Finally, for the first time you have exercised the right to be truthful with everyone. How do you feel after lifting such a heaving burden of your DUMB shoulders?
I am not sure about you, however, the rest of us are very happy with your “dumb” post.
Thank you, thank you so very much and please have a nice day.
A. F.A.N. Not! at 1:38PM on Mar 9th 2008
23. You're a little jumpy? What do you do?
First, take a deep breath and calm down. When you're going to take action and you're not in immediate risk this second, then being scared and in a panic is not going to help you make the best decisions. Less than 3000 people died in 9/11. Tens of thousands more die in car crashes. As many people have died of bee stings in the last six years as in the attack. Do we go into hysterics against the honeybee? No. Do we completely scrap the constitution to prevent car crashes? No. But three thousand die in an attack and hysteria reigns.
So, first, calm down. Secondly, identify the threat. Was this attack carried out by one of the millions of muslims in America? No. It was carried out by sixteen individuals of an organization of a few thousand. Are you going to consider every one of billions of muslims, or every man woman and child born in Afganistan, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia as a dire threat?
Powers that be correctly identified the culprits initially. Al quida and their sponsor, the Taliban. But then those powers that be, and various media agencies, expanded the 'threat' to individuals and nations that had nothing to do with the immediate threat posed at Al Quida. And futher individuals and groups, who have a dislike or intolerance for individuals with tolerant or liberal ideals, further inflated the envelope of fear and threats to justify action against them. These targets of opportunity did nothing but hold beliefs and opinions that individuals disagreed with.
The third thing you do is take action that eliminates the threat. This doesn't always mean blowing people up and killing them. When some one has a cold you don't cut their heads off. You take medicine for it. But if that's all you do, don't be surprised if you get sick again and again and have to take medicine again and again. If you alter your lifestyle to boost your resistance, then you're less likely to get sick and less likely to need to buy more medicine. And if you think that sucking the infected snot from a guy's nose will make you well then you're going to be getting real sick real quick.
Our current method of alienating and persecuting muslims is the equivalent of sucking out the snot. The poverty and lack of education perpetuates the sickness. When we allow fear and ignorance to make intolerant and bigoted remarks against muslims in America, let alone all muslims everywhere, we are creating conditions that allowed Al Quida to get their start in the first place. We are essentially proving their own flawed rhetoric. And at the same time we undermine and diminish all of the good works and virtues of America: liberty, fairness, and tolerance for all regardless of their beliefs.

24. IRONBLUEEYES, you are correct in that I don't know a lot about the "Armenican Genocide."
My advice to you is to GET OVER IT.

25. IRONBLUEEYES, it really looks like you shouldn't be pissed off at Cenk. You should be pissed off at the Bush Junta.
The Bush Junta refused to acknowledge an, "Armenain Holocaust" because it isn't politically expedient. Yet there you are, a dyed in the wool rethugnican.
And it seems that Turkey wasn't even a nation at that time. You're pissed off at the Ottoman Empire.
Good luck with that.

26. 25% of the world population is Muslim,& growing
faster than any other group, with an average of
5.8 kids per family vs. an average of 1.9 to 2.1
in France, England & the USA for the white popuation. England believed as Mr. Uygur! Muslim families had lived there 40 yrs. & were involved and perpatrators of the bombings; in England Mosques outnumber churches;France is now over 20% Muslim; Spain, since the train bombing, is Muslimized; Holland is now restricting
immigrants..Muslims! The founders of our nation did not mean to be naive & stupid relative to equality! Just look at the facts. Obama...he did go to a Muslim school up 8 or 9, his
father(s) were Muslim; his anti white church leader openly praised, gave an award & supports the US Muslim leader Louis Farrakhan (an open USA, Jewish & white hater); his wife's insulting comments about our country ("..first time she's proud of the USA"); does not wear the American flag pin, Obama deserves to be questioned...
facts are necessary..not words. It's sad that our America has such pathetic candidates, with checkered, suspect histories for President!
Where is a true, homegrown, proven American??
You decide!!

28. The reason muslims are focused on is because almost all the terriorist acts are conducted by Muslims, not residents of Antartica.. If the vast majority of Muslims do not support terriorists where are they ? Why do they not speak up ? They are cowards and afraid to speak out for fear of being attacked themselves or secretly agree with terriorists. So much for the religion of peace and love.
phil palermo at 5:53PM on Mar 9th 2008
29. Somber - You are correct about the numbers, but you leave an awful lot out of the equation. There could have easily been 25,000-50,000 killed at the WTC, had there not been adequate escape time.
The amazing thing is not that the towers came down, but that they remained standing so long. And the Radical Islamists want to kill many more. Bin Laden and al Queda are openly talking about an "American Hiroshima".
Nobody is suggesting rounding up Muslims or doing anything extreme. You took one comment I made - about being a little jumpy - and amplified it way out of context. America is one of the most tolerant nations on earth and that's the way it should be, as I said before.
And when it comes to peaceful Muslims, we are the ones who have been coming to their aid for quite some time, whether it is victims of Tsunamis or of ethnic cleansing in the Balkans. Saddam Hussein has murdered more Muslims than anybody in a long time. And we took him out.
Those brainwashed Islamic radicals who blow themselves up have an endless number of stated grievances against the United States because they have a doctrinaire belief that we are evil and nothing can change that. These people (Islamic Radicals) are also hypocrites, because they are the ones responsible for the slaughter in Darfur.
Islamic Radicals are similar to their idealogical brethren, the Nazis, they can't be persuaded. They must be destroyed. Your tedious lecture ignores the obvious.
Dave at 6:45PM on Mar 9th 2008
30. And Justly so, as Islamic groups have Declared jihad on the US and Western society, which also includes all of Europe, and anywhere there is not Sharia law. So Jutly so, should we ask these questions because in there land, we are treated as Inferior, and openly treated so according to there religion. So what do you expect, a warm return. I would hope not. Islam is a Disease, same as Liberalism. If not for 99.9% of terrorist attacks being done my Muslim men and women, maybe the reaction might be a little different. But the Islamic Communities Dead Silence, and Following of Sharia law and the Quran, leads us to act this way. And with Just cause. Give a Muslim an inch, he will want a Mile. give a Fundamentalist and Inch, he will Explode himself and take as many as possible with him.
