In the 1950's, at the height of the Red Scare, people would be asked "Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?" Now, we have the Green Scare where even presidential candidates are asked, "Are you now or have you ever been a Muslim?"
Barack Obama has been asked this question multiple times throughout the campaign (you can see 60 Minutes asking him this question in the video below). For the record, he isn't. He's a good Christian (as opposed to a bad Muslim, I suppose). But what if he was Muslim? Well, that would automatically disqualify him, wouldn't it? The sad thing is that there's no question that it would.
Americans might vote for a woman or a black candidate, but a Muslim is out of the question. Not even close. In fact, it's now considered a smear to call a candidate a Muslim. I don't know if people know this, but Muslim-Americans are just as American as Christian-Americans. I know that seems ridiculous, come on, they're Muslim! But no, if you check the constitution, amazingly enough, all Americans are in fact supposed to be equal.
So, why am I so animated by this? Wait a minute, am I now or have I ever been a Muslim?!
I better answer those charges before you take my opinion on this seriously. What if I'm a closet Muslim trying to infiltrate the United States? You know there are real Muslims who are trying to undermine this country. We have to be careful. They're a threat to our way of life. Just like those communists were ... oh yeah.

32. Muslims are a totally different breed from the Christians. The Christians will woo someone and tell them about the gospel. But the Muslum's in their country, will force a person to convert. I see all of these Somalians riding around in their govrnment paid for cars with signs that say "I love Allah", and tags that read Ramadan. They can do that in our country. But we would be dead if we did that in their country. In the first place we wouldn't be able to find a sign that said I love Jesus. And they surely woulen't allow us to buy license plates that said Jesus. take the coment below...

The Muslim's are more equal than mere Americans. Hell, they are given work breaks to go and pray 5 times a day on their jobs. If they don't get that time, they claim religious persecution. But let a Christian bow his head before a meal and it causes an uproar. Praying in public on public property. In fact a man was arrested for passing out tracts on a public street because he didn't have a parade permit.

33. I'm surprised there aren't worldwide violent protests against the asking of that question, since it seems just about everything is offensive to muslims if it is in the slightest way critical or negative. Any defense of islam as a peaceful, loving religion is absurd. The fact that christianity has its own shortcomings means nothing when discussing muslims or islam. It is brought up merely to deflect attention away from the real issue. Islam is a religion which condones and actually rewards violent, psychopathic behavior. It is sexist, intolerant, hateful, and restrictive to basic human rights. Therefore it represents the antithesis of what the United States clearly outlines its constitution. Leave islam in the 7th century where it belongs.

Whoops, then. I guess the millions of Muslims in America must all be plotting to kill us. Except you'd think that for the dozens of years some have lived here, they could have killed us all. You'd think that millions of people could be more effective about destroying America.
Oh yeah, that's right: THEY DON'T WANT TO.
There is nothing in Islam itself that requires killing others. Jihad can be interpreted as a defensive counterattack, not forceful conversion. And last I checked, there were plenty of Muslims in America that were doing nothing wrong. We have no right to infringe on their fundamental rights as human beings to life, liberty, or the pursuit of happiness.
One more thing: Muslims have condemned the actions of violent terrorists. Al Qaeda and the like are not killing in the name of Islam, they are using Islam as a label to justify their mad pursuits. There is a difference.

36. Wow! When I read some of these ignorant, angry responses from my fellow Americans, I am truly embarrassed to be one. Perhaps freedom of speech should be banned if so many close minded people are allowed to express themselves. There is no question that being a Muslim is this country is like being a communist of old. Please try to forgive my countrymen and women, they know not what they do.

37. From what I have seen of the Muslim culture in not only the middle east but also Europe the customs like "honor killings" and suicide bombers are violence we don't need in America. I remember the riots when Muslims tried to burn down France a few years ago, trains attacked in the U. K. and Spain with explosives by Muslim groups.
I have seen the result of home grown Muslims especially Black Muslims that seem to have a high rate of extreme hate for whites. The Black Nation of Islam in America wants to be separatists I also remember after ex-con H. Rap Brown the "Black Panther" of the 60's but later became Jamil Abdllah Al-Amin and killed two Atlanta policemen who stopped him in a routine traffic stop when he just happened to have a sub machine gun.
No I do not ever want a Muslim as president of this country. A bad president is easy to elect but near impossible to get rid of. In fact I wish the United States would not allow Muslim immigrants to this country at all.

38. dennisg (#37) - Honor killings, racial hatreds, and riots are horrific and are not limited to Muslims. Where is your condemnation of the Druze, Yezidi and Christians for honor killings? (http://www.stophonourkillings.com/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1587)
Where is your condemnation of the White Supremacists groups? Where is your condemnation of the WTO rioters? Where is your condemnation of Northern Ireland's terrorists?
You are holding up extremists as representatives of the population and that is wrong.

43. This is the first time in history that an African-American or a woman has been in a position to be elected to the Presidency. I believe we are moving toward a better consciousness of humanity when any qualified US citizen can become President, including American Muslim candidates.

44. The problem is that for every Muslim who views politics like Catholics and mainline Protestants (I'm not going to touch how Evangelicals vies politics) do, that they are separate parts of one's life and may be at odds, there is a Muslim who takes his religion too seriously.
I'm a lawyer and once had a client, a native of Pakistan, who needed to evict some deadbeat tenants, who were also Pakistani.
He told me that he was very embarrased to have to go to court and explain the situation, where anyone could sit and listen, and the decision of the judge was a public record.
In Pakistan, disputes are generally settled by an imam, and only if the parties fail to follow the imam's decision does the government get involved in enforcing the judgment.
Obviously, Americans are of a different mindset, because we almost relish the idea of telling a judge and/or jury what someone did that was wrong.
Then, my church had a speaker, shortly after 9/11, from a nearby mosque, talk about Islam. During the Q&A session, we learned that, besides being a native of Pakistan, educated in the U.S., and an egineer with the state department of transportation, he said that the main problem with the U.S. is the separtation of church and state, and that the U.S. would be better off if church leaders ran the country, rather than the voters electing non-clergy to run the country.
Besides the fact that it blew my mind that a former government employee thought that clergy could better run the U.S., it also showed that Muslims don't understand U.S. history or Americans.
We had a war to get rid of a monarch who was "Defender of the Faith," and we have so many denominations that church leaders trying to run the U.S. would be more contentious than the current state of affairs in Washington.
Could you see the Presiding Bishop of the ELCA, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention, the Leader of the Council of Twelve for the Mormon Church, the Moderator of the Prebyterian Church USA, and one of the American Cardinals of the Roman Catholic Church trying to govern the U.S.?
It shows that Islam doesn't try to educate its followers about even the most rudimentary tenants of Christianity, or the basic differences between the major Christian denominations.
And it show that many leaders of Islam haven't embraced sectarian democracy the way Christianity, Judiasm, Hinduism, Buddaism, and the other major faiths have.
This is why Americans are somewhat leery of electing Muslims to public office
