Man Stuck in Elevator for 41 Hours

Posted Apr 15th 2008 11:46AM by Ada Calhoun

In its recent elevator feature, The New Yorker told the incredibly sad story about an office worker, Nicholas White, who went out for a smoke break then on his way back got stuck in the elevator -- for 41 hours. The Times covered the tragedy and basically said he should sue for millions. So sue he did.

But he didn't get much. In the New Yorker piece, Nick Paumgarten writes of White: "Looking back on the experience now, with a peculiarly melancholic kind of bewilderment, he recognizes that he walked onto an elevator one night, with his life in one kind of shape, and emerged from it with his life in another."

Now he's unemployed and the video of his ordeal is being watched by thousands on Gawker. Someone hire this poor man! Preferably to work on the ground floor.
