The Democratic debate on ABC last night was terrible. They went 52 minutes before asking one question about the issues. The moderators did the Republicans' work for them by distracting voters with what people said rather than what they have done. They focused on what Obama, his pastor and his neighbor (literally) have said in the past as opposed to what Obama plans to do for the country.
The Republicans have driven this country into the ground economically, nearly destroyed our standing in the world and literally caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq in a war that the Pentagon's premier military educational institute just concluded was "a major debacle." Meanwhile, ABC anchors are worried about what Obama is wearing and what someone he knows said at some point in their lives. This is insanity. And it has to change.
I wrote about the politics of distraction here. The Republicans do this every four years and the media falls for it every four years. And in the video below I can't contain my anger at how badly they botched this debate. The reason I'm so angry is because this is so important. We're not selecting the next American Idol. The president makes life and death decisions on a daily basis. Will they for the love of God ask questions that help us to figure out who is going to make the correct decisions and have the right policies?

46. Yeah! It was W's fault.
If neither of these two people can handle hard or tough questions now, how in the hell are they going to stand up to the "nut case" in Iran or Uncle Hugo or even someone as friendly as Hamas. Give me a break. I haven't heard one really tough question asked of either of them. If you are not old enough to remember the Carter Presidency, you will soon know how bad things got in the late 70's. Can we all say 19% interest rates and NO gas let alone pricey gas.

48. If John McCain had been hanging with Timothy McVeigh, in the same manner as the Weather Underground guy has been hanging with Obama, would Cenk consider that an "issue" worthy of discussion?
Democrats never want to talk about character when it's about their lousy character, but when the character question is about GW's supposed lying, that's OK to discuss until the cows come home.

49.
Dear Dave,
We can debate all you want about each other’s redundancy when it comes to the issues that matter to each of us. However, I preferred to debate on the issues that matter and affect the way we live in our nation.
My so-called “claims” as you have put it, sadly are the realities in which we have been subjected to for the past eight years under the incompetence of this administration.
Alternatively, what I have repeated on my posts is nothing less than the truth, I am very sorry that you cannot seem to recognize it for what it is. As for those truths to have been soundly refuted, again, all that I can comment on is that I am in deed sorry you cannot or refuse to see what is at best, an incompetent president with an incompetent administration. Alternatively, what are at worst the dealings of liars who have caused the deaths of over 4000 soldiers just to satisfy their little agenda?
Furthermore, if as you claim “Richard Armittage” was responsible for outing Valerie Plame he is nothing more than the typical escape goat. Moreover, Dave why is it that you will not accept the fact that this woman was a covert agent? Could it be that those “talking points” have worked their magic on you? Even after her boss testified that she was a covert agent you would preferred to believe in an administration that has lied to you from the very beginning.
Therefore, I can only say that it is your assertion that makes great GOP talking points, it always has and I see no indications of it ever stopping.
What an amazing capacity for patient’s faith you continue to demonstrate for this administration. I am astonished that you are not even a bit angry with them and their arrogance and their inability to do anything that will not benefit their bottom dollar.

53. Dear Patty,
I've read your comments with interest. I think what I was trying to say is that Obama is undergoing much more scrutiny than ever before, due in large part to his associations. Now, I truly believe that he has been given a bit of a pass by the press, and now must answer for certain things. Of course, the press will beat this "elitist" thing to death. Is he an elitist? I think so. However, Patty...if you think this is tough, wait till the general election! All politicians have had an Achilles Heel..and Obama is no different. Heck, I don't even blame him for trying to put a positive spin on his problems..they all do.
You are right, the focus should be on the issues. I personally believe that Obama has a somewhat naive world view, but that is an ideological argument best saved for another day. The voting public, however, does want to know about the man. They want to know about his character. Yes, he's very bright, articulate, and impressive in many ways. Being smart and well educated, though, does not necessarily make you a good person, or a good leader. I think he needs more experience, and this is not the time for on the job training. However, I think Hillary is more experienced, but I cannot stand the woman..not that it matters.
Now, I am not gung-ho for McCain! I think he has a lot of negatives as well. His temper, his hypocricy on McCain-Feingold, his acknowledgement that he's no expert on the economy, etc. And yes, he probably did use that word I hate to describe his wife. So, we have three flawed candidates. I just chose the one with whom I agree more than disagree.

56. Dear April,
Thank you for responding to my post with constructive and thoughtful remarks. As I stated earlier I realize that we do not always agree on the issues, however, we can respect each other’s points of view.
Moreover, we could conceivably argue about which candidate has gotten a free ride from the press. In my opinion, I think that the press has beaten up Hillary more than it has beaten up the other candidates. I personally think that she is partly to blame for the treatment she has received or perceived to have received. I believe that Senator Obama’s interactions with the media have been civil and more respectful, because he has been more respectful with the media. Of course, he has received a lot of negative and unfair scrutiny from the far right media (What a surprise…) As for Senator McCain, I think he has been allowed to get away with a lot more than any other candidate has even when there were still 10 or 20 candidates running around.
My concerns are the issues and not the gossip or rhetoric. I felt that the other night’s debate was insulting to the American audience. What relevancy does Pastor Wright’s love of his country have to do with Senator Obama or his qualifications to be president? Furthermore, to spend over 30 minutes talking about the pastor, the tar mat at the air port, and all that other crap we have heard repeatedly will not solve the gas prices, or the national debt or any of the real issues we are facing in our nation at present.
Moreover, do we care if the candidates are elitist? They all have been elitist for many, many decades. However, unfortunately for us they have not all been very smart or articulate. Just look back at the past eight years.
Alternatively, I only hope that who ever get the job of President will do a better job than the person we have had to endure for eight long years. I will vote for the Democratic candidate because I am in line with their values and I share the same concerns as they do, I have to admit I prefer Senator Obama for the job, having said that if Hillary should be nominated I will vote for her.
If Senator McCain wins the presidency, I will be supportive of the office, and hope that he can manage to straighten out our nation. G-d knows whom ever wins has their work cut out for them.

57. Patty - Redundancy is one thing, but making demonstrably false claims are another thing entirely. What you seem to be saying is if that even if that one claim is false it's irrelevant in light of the larger picture - which you understand to be the Bush Administration's malfeasance. My question is: How many other logical fallacies make up your perception of the Bush Administration?

You keep going on with your Valerie Plame theroy that she was a covert CIA Operative with out giving any proof. You also express doubt that Richard Armittage is the one who gave name Valerie Plame to Novak.
A Victoria Toensing says and proves that Valerie Plame was never a Covert CIA Operative. Toensing was chief council to the Senate Intelligence Committee during the 1980's, involved in the drafting of the Intelligence Identities Protection Act. Toensing has consistantly asserted-in an Op-Ed for the Washington Post, for instance that Plame WAS NOT covered under IIPA. Toensing says that when the original IIPA was drafted, it was intended to cover operatives serving overseas and a provision that covered those who had served overseas within the previous 5 years was intended to protect the sources of operatives who had returned. According to unclassified CIA Documents, it showed Plame was station in the USA and that this law was never intended for weekend travel. The Senate Committee has carefully considered the definition of "covert agent" and has included only those which it has determined to be absolutely necessary for reasons to protect for reasons of imminent danger to life or significent interference with vital intelligence activities.
Source-Salon.com/Wikipedia/V. Toensing
On 9-6-06, Richard Armittage admitted that he was the one who gave the name Valerie Plame to Novak, but was unaware of Plames status with the CIA. 8-29-06 NY Times and on 8-30-06 CNN both reported it was Richard Armittage who gave Novak the name of Valerie Plame. Novak also admitted it was Armittage. Wikipedia
The story you keep putting forth is a proven lie, yet you keep saying things knowing thy are lies.
If you believe the false story about Plame is in fact true, fell free to post you sources.
PS Victoria Toensing help write the law about exposing a CIA's identity, and she disagrees with your version.

You recently talked about the front page article of the Daily Mirror, and English Tabloid, that had a front page that said That 50000000 Dumb Americans Voted for Bush (maybe not exact words0
You posted a reply about the front page and nothing about the story that went along with the Dumb Americans front page, nor another story which I showed the Daily Mirror is not a respectable Tabloid as you claimed.
The Daily Mirror story to go with the front page was that all the states that voted for Bush had a lower IQ than all the States that voted for Kerry.
That story was found to be a lie and the Mirror printed a retraction.
Patty you said nothing about the lie story of the Mirror that was used to back up the front page calling 55000000 million americans dumb.
You said the mirror was respectable. On 5-14-04, The Daily Mirror published photos of soldiers beating prisoners at Abu Ghraid in order to discredit Bush over the Iraq War and abuse of prisoners. It was found out almost immediately that the photos were fake and the story was fake, so the paper printed a retraction.
Patty you did not answer this also, or do you find it best when you put your foot in your mouth it is best not to reply??? Cowards way out.
The Daily Mirror, your respected Tabloid Mirror, prints lies for stories then are forced to retract these stories because they are such blatant
lies
