This is Producer Will Hines again, filling in for Mo while he continues his week-long sabbatical.
Today is April 22 or "Earth Day," a well-intentioned holiday that helps raise awareness of important environmental issues. But ironically, Earth Day itself feels inorganic to me -- forced and even rote. Better that then nothing when it comes to protecting the world, I know.
Still, much more interesting to me is "4/20" -- the unofficial celebration of marijuana which occurs two days before. I don't partake of marijuana -- we here at Mo Rocca 180 are notoriously unadventurous when it comes to drugs. But I am fascinated with successful civil disobedience. On Sunday at the University of Colorado, thousands of students gathered and smoked marijuana in public with no reports of other recklessness or lawbreaking. There were police on hand, but seeing that they were outnumbered, simply allowed the kids to smoke marijuana while making sure the gathering was otherwise safe. That's a smart, pragmatic decision which I respect. It gives me hope that there's a chance to have non-violent protest without having police or other authorities feeling threatened.
That, and stoners are hilarious. We didn't go so far as to administer a blood test, but the seemingly affected young men that Mo interviewed in this piece on Mitt Romney were two of my most favorite interviewees (they first appear at 26 seconds in). And they certainly seemed to be keeping their world "green."

180 swat team, you are doing a great job!-kinda like methadone for Mo!
I'd take stoners over drunks any day. I had to fire this adorable stoner at work one day, because he kept laying on one of the veterinary surgery tables and reading the comics...he took it in stride-it was all very pleasant. He gave me a hug months later ringing the Salvation Army bell...telling me he missed me.....

2. Well, those students clearly are not interested in obtaining jobs that require drug screening, which is most jobs today. Hm.

3. Aw Will,
Happy Earth Day. As if I already don't feel guilty enough for not driving a
hybrid or propping up an ice shelf...
I plain feel guilty for laughing it up on Mo's blog when he's away.
I hope he plans on sending a postcard.
Now, you know all the Roccats love you and Andrew and, well, Doug is
Doug, but we love him too. It's just that it don't feel right.

7. Bean & I bought commemerative "Earth Day 2008" reuseable shopping bags @ the grocery store today. They were way more fashionable w/ the brown/green motiff, than the Stop N Shop 'Kelly Green'.
Then we promptly returned home & grilled burgers (MEAT!!!) over hardwood (TREES!!!) charcoal spiked w/ lighter fluid (BUTANE!!!).
We also ate skewered baby corn & baby zucchini (BABIES!!!).
Happy Earthday.

8. I know where Mo was this week. I saw him at St. Joseph's Seminary. He opened for the Pope, if you can believe it.

9. I'll tell ya something, producer Will Hines filling in for Mo, Earth Day, as it was first planned, wasn't a bad idea.
The thought was back in the early 70's that groups would rally at a sites around the country with garbage bags and pick up trash. Places like parks, small streams, lakes or any place there was a concentration of trash.
But far more often than not, after breaking out the contra ban drugs and drinking gallons of cheap jug wine, everyone went home leaving behind more trash than when they got there.
Earth Day...if you live in NYC, celebrate it by driving your SUV to California and back....twice.

10. Is Mo a drug? Am I addicted? Is this why I can't focus on anything but duck hunting, Star Wars, pedeggs, Abba and stewardesses? On Earth Day, we need Mo. Where did he go fishing? Is he in recovery from his exposure to Darth Vader? Did they take him out back and make him an offer he can't refuse? Show us his body? Show us a picture so we know he's okay. I'm going to start eating out of trash cans and good stuff off the floor after 5 seconds.

11. Can't read new Mo at 180? Read a review of Mo at the Corespondents' Dinner on Huffpo. And note the coverage of "Wait. . Wait"'s Peabody Award on the Peabody site and see "Wait. . .Wait"'s Webby Award nomination (& vote) on the Webby site. Mo is in the air!
Ah, Clem, my husband just yesterday recalled the greatness of the couplet "Give a Hoot--Don't pollute." And we know that "Every litter bit hurts."

14. As if life wasn't complicated enough with all the politically correct or incorrect things you have to remember not to say, do, write, etc., now I have to worry someone thinks I'm possibly using, wishing to use, or selling weed every time I write or speak of 4/20. Oh bother!!!!

15. Aw Will,
I like bonaventure’s line of thought. So much so that I just got off the phone with Andy Sipowicz of the NYPD’s finest DTs. I asked him what he thought Mo might be up to, disappearing so suddenly. He said,
“Well, you probably should be talking to LaPaglia about this, since Mo’s not a skel, but when we have someone we like for a crime and they go on the lamb, we usually talk to the Riding DA to get a warrant, since we wanna get ahead of this thing and snatch him up before he lawyers up.”
That was really helpful. Not.
But, let’s look at the timing of this mysterious “fishing trip.”
Could Mo have gone to the first public appearance of Dana Carvey and Reba McEnitire?
Is Mo spending the week with the Cruises celebrating Suri’s birthday?
Is Mo on ice until the DNA comes back from the Polygamy cult?
Is Mo spotting Gweneth and Madonna in the gym?
Is Mo being interviewed for John McCain’s running mate?
Is Mo interviewing for a new producer, editor and interns?
Is Mo and Prince William planning a helicopter rescue of Crafty?
Someone has to ask the hard questions.
JG^^
