Phil Donahue was on our show yesterday to talk about his new award winning documentary, Body of War. It's the story of one wounded vet who has come back from Iraq to fight against what's happening. During the interview, he made a great point about the war -- it's an insult to our troops to be unconcerned about the human costs of this war because it's only the volunteer US troops who are dying and getting maimed for life.

1. I've always thought this myself. Republicans keep saying how insulting it is to "retreat" or "surrender" (to whom they never say), but they think nothing of sacrificing a few thousand of us peons for profit, even as our economy comes crashing down because we were all so busy staring at the sand dunes.

2. Are you telling me that a hawk like Donahue is against the war? This is certainly a stop the presses story. Next Bill Maher will also come out against the war. To bad Stalin is dead. Maybe you would have him on your show espousing his views on American foreign policy. Nice job knucklehead.

3. You know what's insulting...a washed up variety show host and an unkown blogger thinking we should give credence to their extreme opinions.
Who is Chuck Enger at 11:45AM on Apr 23rd 2008
4. Eric and Chuck got it right. We should never give in to an unidentifiable non-uniformed enemy. We should fight the windwill for a 100 years to make that point!
As a mterr of concious lets go back to vietnam to finish the job...LOL

5. Wait a second-is Stank admitting that D-lister Phil Donahue was a guest on the "show"? What's next, the Hollywood update with Crispin Glover?
Looks like Err America is in even worse shape than I thought...

6. Air America isn't nearly as interesting as the, "Birdman Jones Show." Phil Donahue's award winning documentary will fade into obscurity as soon as Birdman Jones' award winning documentary comes out.
The 19 per centers are a lost cause.

War isn't disrespectful to the troops, it's disrespectful to everyone - except the rich

8. Almost clever cap... But thanks for including me in the 19 percenters, assuming you mean the select few that shoulder burden for the rest.
BirdmanJones at 1:13PM on Apr 23rd 2008
9. No, Birdman, the 19 percenters are those who think that this country is doing just dandy under the Bush-Cheney Junta.
The idea that Birdman Jones is carrying anything heavier than the rocks in his head is laughable. What would we do without you? How could our republic survive without the politically and socially brain-dead, 19 per centers?
Your type votes for the guy you'd rather have a beer with.

10. "phil Donahue would have been ranting against WW2 and finding reasons why we should have a nuanced view of Hitler before condemning him. He certainly would never have criticized Stalin. "
-------------------------------------------------
Bullshit!
"Donahue is virtually a pacifist and turns a blind eye on left wing atrocities while being an apologist for the likes of Castro and Chavez. "
-------------------------------------------
More bullshit!
The United States has tried to assassinate Castro. The Bush-Cheney Junta and their "spiritual leaders" wish they could find a way to assassinate Chavez.
Why people expect our enemies to lie down and roll over for us is a mystery. The United States is in such serious decline that all we have is military power. We don't have the respect of the world. We don't have the influence that we used to have. We don't have the economic power that we used to have. All that remains is the power to bully. Believe it or not... that isn't enough.
Captain Negative at 1:29PM on Apr 23rd 2008
11. Kevin, you jumped to a wrong conclusion. i am not in favor of this war because of the merits. phil Donahue would have been ranting against WW2 and finding reasons why we should have a nuanced view of Hitler before condemning him. He certainly would never have criticized Stalin. Just because we may agree on a narrow issue as the war in Iraq, we don't come to that conclusion coming from the same political point of view. I think ill conceived limited political wars never have much chance for success. war is a last result where all other avenues have been exhausted. Donahue is virtually a pacifist and turns a blind eye on left wing atrocities while being an apologist for the likes of Castro and Chavez. Just because Bush was wrong about Iraq and Johnson was wrong about southeast Asia doesn't mean Donahue is right.
Eric at 1:35PM on Apr 23rd 2008
12. I agree with everything Phil said. Capt., why is it that the "19%" make up 95% of the posters on this blog? Nineteeners, if you don't agree with Cenk, why read the blog and post your moronic opinions? I don't watch Faux News or check Bill O'Reilly's blogs, why do you read TYT?
Sarah at 1:39PM on Apr 23rd 2008
13. Captain negative, all you have proven is that you also defend Castro and Chavez just as Donahue. As far as the US being in decline, tell all those who are clamoring to come here. The US makes mistakes but it never ceases to amaze me that in each generation the gloom and doomers say the same nonsense over and over.
Eric at 1:42PM on Apr 23rd 2008
14. Now cap, petty insults? Sad. Your therapist would tell you that such lashing out is due to the pain that comes from watching "my type" prevail regardless of who's in office. And as far as voting, I can assure you that it's not the "vote for who's running against the one I hate" approach so popular these days.
BirdmanJones at 1:46PM on Apr 23rd 2008
15. Sarah, your comment exhibits a great intellect. Notwithstanding, I will respond. I and many like me, don't always read those with whom we agree. It is mind expanding to see all points of view, even yours, as juvenile and sophomoric as it is. As far as Fox news is concerned, a really intelligent person is able to listen to many different points of view and glean out those which may be valid. I know that all of you with collective leftwing Stockholm syndrome feel that watching conservative commentators will somehow infect you. It won;t.
