While on the debating circuit pounding atheists--a pastime I am really getting to enjoy--I have just started reading Dalia Mogahed and Esposito's Who Speaks for Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think. It's one of the first books to put some real data behind a much-disputed question. Go ahead and order the book here.
For several years now liberal and conservative pundits have been pontificating about the Muslim world, usually without a shred of data. I was amused last year to cross swords with some of my fellow conservatives like Scott Johnson and Victor Davis Hanson. These ideologues seem of the opinion that the average Muslim is a crazed polygamist who is ready to blow himself up. No surprise: this is supposedly what Muslims all learn in the school where they read nothing but the Koran! Only pundits who have no exposure to Muslim countries, Muslim history and Muslim people can go on like this.
For such gurus, Islam itself is the problem and nothing short of an Islamic Reformation headed by ex-Muslims like Hirsi Ali will show the Muslim world where it has gone wrong over the past five centuries. Forgotten in all this theorizing is the simple fact that Islam has been around for 1300 years and Islamic terrorism has been around for a few decades. The intelligent questions to ask are, what is it about Islam today that has made it an incubator of radicalism and terrorism? And second, what do most Muslims really think about the West?
Fortunately there is an increasing body of reliable data on Muslim beliefs. One source is the World Values Survey, which has the benefit of tracking opinions over a period of decades. Another is the Gallup surveys which are now under the aegis of the Gallup Center for Muslim Studies, a group headed by Mogahed. Esposito is one of the most respected American authorities on Islam. I am only getting into their book, but here I offer my own hypothesis, and then I'm going to find out if their data vindicate it.
The problem for Muslims is not Christianity or Judaism. In fact, Islam sees itself as incorporating both in much the same way that Christianity sees itself as incorporating Judaism. The problem for most Muslims is liberalism. But here we must distinguish betwen two kinds of liberalism. There is the classical liberalism of the American founding. Call this Liberalism 1. This liberalism is reflected in such principles as the right to vote, to assemble freely, to debate issues, to trade with others, religious toleration, and so on.
Then there is the modern liberalism of the 1960s. Call this Liberalism 2. This liberalism is defined by such tenets as the right to blaspheme, the right of teenage boys and girls to receive sex education and contraceptives, the right to abortion, prostitution as a worker's right, pornography as a protected form of expression, gay rights and gay marriage, and so on. It is this second type of liberalism that seems to drive the social agenda of today's Democratic Party. For example, Hillary Clinton chaired a presidential task force during the 1990s that promoted prostitution as an international right for workers.
Now we are in a better position to understand Islamic attitudes regarding the West. The vast majority of Muslims worldwide embrace Liberalism 1 while rejecting Liberalism 2. They are generally comfortable with classical liberalism while abhorring the tenets of modern liberalism. And by equating America with such things as blasphemy, pornography, prostitution and homosexualty, the radical Muslims appeal to ordinary Muslims to join their cause in a battle against the Great Satan. This is what I have argued in my recent work and I'm interested to see how my thesis stands up in light of Mogahed and Esposito's data.
Of course today's liberals will chafe at the idea that their values are producing a powerful "blowback" from the House of Islam. That's why we need good empirical work like this book. Let us find out what Muslims really think, and then let us look at the propaganda of the radical Muslims to see how they rally traditional Muslims to their side. Who cares if liberals don't like to admit what is going on? People are entitled to their own opinions but they are not entitled to their own facts.

872. History it self has provided evidence of the blood of men and women that have gave their life for what you regard as a mere fairy tail.
-----------------------
I'm assuming your point here is that people have been so sucked into the God fantasy that they've given their lives for it. I mean, what other point could you have? After all, there were martyrs in other religions before Christ ever came along... People are stupid TODAY. Imagine two thousand years ago! And you want to return to that stiupidity. Because you're too lazy to use your brain. You just like to feel safe. And your fear of death and hell is a gun to your head, forcing you to not even THINK that you just might be wrong. It's called "Conditioning."
Can't you see how pathetic that is?
If all people are imperfect and fallible, what makes you so special? You think you've got the line on ultimate truth, but all you have is a handful of sand running through your fingers.
You are wrong about it all. And we can see it as clear as the proverbial nose on your face. So, there's NO chance of a conversion here, my friend. The one that needs to convert, is you. To sanity.

873. God is real!
-How do yo know?
He tells us so.
-You hear him?
No, but he tells us so in the bible.
-He wrote the bible?
No, men did a long time ago, but they were informed and inspired by God Himself.
-How do you know?
God tells us so.
-In the bible?
Yes, the bible is the literal word of god, and is perfect.
-But it was written by men and not God! You said so yourself! How do you know that is's the literal word of God?
Because it says so right here.
-But, that's the book in question!
Yes, and it's perfect. It says that right here too.
-What if the men lied and made it up?
They didn't. It's the Word of God. If men made it up, it wouldn't be perfect.
-But, the only reason that you "know" it's perfect is because it tells you that it is!
Of course. It is perfect, and the Word of God, so of course it tells us that it is perfect. It wouldn't lie. Do you think God lies? What kind of person are you?
(at this point the questioner's head explodes)

874. Here's another thing about the christian psychosis. Since they divide all reality into the dualistic extremes of good and evil, they need an enemy to hate or they can't feel like they're "doing their part in the good fight." This is best captured I think by the popular phrase "Onward christian soldier." Thou shalt not kill, so how can any christian be a soldier? Well, it's all the hate, you see. They feel best united against a common enemy. Primitive tribal level bonding.
If they don't have oan enemy, they're forced to make one up.
Thus, their very happiness and feelings of self-respect are hinged to how well they can "hate" evil. What they see as evil, that is.
Hating anything is evil. Even hating evil, is evil. That's the catch they don't get.
Love is the answer. Who knew?
And I do love even you christians. But it's a tough love...
Godless Heathen Brian at 1:53PM on Apr 27th 2008
875. And before I leave for a while like I was planning to do a half-hour ago, I'll re-post this, since I wanted to get more comments on it.
Christians, a question:
Whay can't you love your enemies?
I mean, not TRUST your enemies, or even AGREE With them, but why can't you see them as FELLOW HUMANS, and as such, deserving of some level of respect and even love, just for that? I'm the atheist here, and I just naturally think that way. Jesus did too. No doubt about it at all. It was his great strength, in fact. It's in a book called "The Bible." Ever hear of it?
Loving your enemy is not letting them crap on you either. It's like, as Kennedy said, forgive your enemies, but remember their names. Be intelligent about it. Be cagey about it, even. Never be a sucker because of that love. Balance it with being ALERT and SMART about it. But definitely love them, at least at some abstract level, because but for the grace of being born a on a particular spot, they are the same as you are. You could have BEEN one of them, in most ways, if you'd been born to (or even adopted by) their parents. And one of them could have been you, practically, if they'd been born to or adopted by yours.
For instance, when you think of a Muslim Terrorist, all that you christians can think about them is sheer, non-verbal-level hatred of them and everything associated with them. For one thing, this makes you BLIND to learning anything of value about them. And knowing your enemy is universally considered to be one of the most important things, if not THE most important thing, in a war. Miyamoto Musashi said so. Go Rin No Sho. A wonderful book. Sun Tzu said so in The Art of War too. But to really know the Muslim (or the atheist) requires a desire to truly learn enough about them to empathize with their motives, even if we totally disagree with them or think they're horrible. In order to do that, we have to have the desire to first, the desire to LEARN about someone completely DIFFERENT from us.
Because the only way to ever really WIN the worldwide war on terror is not only to kill the terrorists, but to remove their MOTIVES for being one in the first place. Just pursue the killing part, and see how many terrorists we have in ten years. (A LOT MORE)
And I'll give you a hint. They don't "hate us for our freedom." It's a lot more complicated than that. And we're not BLAMELESS here, either. If you don't have the courage to face up to that, then you're not worth talking to.
We all need to learn MORE. The question is, WILL WE? And the best way to learn something is for it to be about something you already like. So if you HATE HATE HATE them, you're not going to ever want to learn about them, not beyond mere surface details. And also, if all you're doing is HATE, then you're not much better thaqn they are, are you? Jesus certainly wouldn't approve at all. Jesus was about LOVE. Or so the book says, when it makes sense at all.
I can tell you one thing I'm sure of. If a group of people do nothing but hate certain others for long enough, even if justified by, say, something really horrible they did, like 9/11, eventually they will become exactly as bad as whatever it is that they're hating so much. It's subtle and hard to detect, too. So gradual, you'll never feel it as you become EVIL over a long period of time. THAT'S why your god told you not to act like this. He apparently knew what I'm telling you here.
You guys, not so much. You need to work on the love thing. Oh, in the mean time, for the sake of honesty, can't you all change your name to something other than "christians?" I really take offense at it, since I happen to like Jesus' philosophy and words quite a bit. How about "Lostians?" (Since you've lost the way)
I love even you christian hypochrists. Yes, I sting you often. My love for you is not a pampering type of love. It's a tough love. This is how I see it. You have a good computer, but it's been infected by a virus that tells it to do and say bad things and think they're good things. I love your computer. I hate the virus infecting it.
I love you as people. And it's EXACTLY THAT LOVE that causes me to feel so sad and angry at what you've let yourselves become. I love you, but I hate your beliefs. And you won't change them, not ever. It's very sad. Like you've intentionally stopped up your ears with wax so as not to hear the siren call of intelligence and awareness, because someone convinced you that God wants it that way.
If you could ever open your mind, I'd love to embrace you as friends and never call you hypochrist again. Botts did it. Why can't you? Think about it. You could actually have friends with completely different views on things! You'd learn so much about others, and about the world! And you'd be in a much better position to "spread the good word" to others, as long as you never, ever tried to force it and taught by example that your faith is a good thing, instead of the mere words to that effect that you have now. You'd have to make a few changes to your good word to make it relevant to people today. Omit all the threats of punishment and damnation, and add in more love of others... Surely you're capable of it!
Basic respect is necessary, though. You'll all have to learn how to do that. Right now, you've learned to AUTOMATICALLY disrespect others with different views. That would have to change. But, your Jesus did it, so you'll just have to have faith that you can, too.

I think it's already been pointed out, but this really describes Dinesh better than it does the liberals.
And he didn't attribute it. It wasn't his in the first place. Not only doesn't he have his own facts, he doesn't have his own original quotes, either.
I bet he copied on his college tests.

(cricket... cricket...)
Talk about a dead blog. And I apparently killed it.
I've committed blogocide. Again. The penalty is, for a repeat offender, rather excessive, I think. I must be subjected to a new Dinesh post, when it comes out. I'll be posting to it somewhere after that nutcake that always agrees with Dinesh and posts that evolutionblogspot horseshit. In other words, somewhere after the second post.
I go now to wassail and wenching. I shall return, refreshed. Maybe by then there'll be a conversation worth having. By that I mean, not with myself.
Although, I could use this space to post my life's story.
"I was born to a middle class family, who promptly gave me up to another middle-class family. Yes, I was regifted. Then, when I was old enough to understand what the adults were saying (1 1/2) I became depressed because I was not yet old enough to form words. (real memory) Then, after I overcame my hatred for the little plastic babie overpants they used to put over the cloth diapers they had back then (another real memory) I went to college, got married, got divorced, and on the fourth try was successful. Yes, it was that hard to find someone that would put up with my shit. And here I sit. The end.
Hey, it's as complete a history as Jesus' is in that bible book you've got there.
Just sayin', is all...

Good thing he has that Messiah thing going...
Oh, and for years I'd wondered about the quotation always printed at the beginning of Poe's Purloined Letter. Translated, it says "Nothing is so odious to knowledge, as too much shrewdness."
It's Eric/Renzo/caviling Ray/whoever! So shrewed and yet so insulting to knowledge. I get it now!
I've just grown as a person.

879. GHB,
I guess 4th times a charm huh? It's always good to find someone who will accept you for who you are. The problem with many marriages is someone always tries to change their partner. As if marriage gives you a title for reformation. People put up with more BS when they are simply partners. I think it is because it is easier to leave when you are dating so people act on their best behavior but once you are married leaving is harder, the separation of material things and all.
I actually did not want to get married, my husband and I dated for 5 years before we tied the knot, and then we were married for 6 years before we had a child. I was in no hurry.

880. Thank you goddess1prevail, for supporting my post addressing man_in_the_wilderness' circular reasoning and reliance on an ancient book of fairy tales. I hope you don't take this as anything negative, but if you can, please instead of the male/female pronoun, "he (or she) said..." may I recommend you use the proxy name or "screen name." I think people like man_in_the_wilderness have their nose so far in the bible that they can't quickly ascertain which pronoun applies to who. Just a suggestion.
As for the continued biblical circular reasoning of the Dinesh-defenders, here is a post one of my favorite bloggers (obviously Chris Aable). It's received about 60,000 hits on MySpace:
Jesus and *many* similarities to others who came before him.
Category: Religion and Philosophy
Before I begin, let me start with the fact that I'm not telling anyone what to believe or not, that's up to each person to reflect on and decide for themselves, hopefully by asking a lot of questions instead of taking things at face value because their elders or community may have long-standing tradition in doing so.
I am not against any study of any religion. To the contrary, as a student of Psychology and Sociology, I've studied many religions passionately at both Los Angeles City College and CSULA, and can often quote the bible better than many of my "Christian" friends can. I've observed that most (not all) religious believers are as relatively nice and compassionate as many of my non-believing friends (There are always "Christian" exceptions such as Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin). In short, I'm not *against* religion as much as I am *for* intellectual honesty.
This post is rather long, but at least a couple of my friends who I consider highly intelligent in many areas agree that this is worth reading for those who value intellectual honesty as opposed to blindly following family or social traditions without question.
If we believe in one god without *real* evidence other than ancient writings and unconfirmed miracles, we may as well believe in all the gods found in hundreds of cultures. The Indians of North and South America have gods very different than the ones found in modern cultures, as do the Muslims, the Mormons, the Catholic's "holy trinity", etc. Indians believed in their gods just as devoutly and earnestly as many "Christians" believe in theirs, and for thousands of years, generation after generation, and in the case of the Greeks, Chinese and Syrians, long before the alleged time of Jesus and Moses.
As LumberJack Jeff notes at the end of this (my) posting:
"Writers that lived during Jesus' time (Apollonius, Ptolemy, Pliny the Elder, Persius, and etc) never mentioned Jesus once in their writing. One would assume that a person as significant as Jesus would be found in the works of the most famous writers of his time."
Yet, not only is Jesus not mentioned by the great writers of his time, neither are his twelve "significant" apostles and their interactions with other "significant" characters of the time.
More to the point, if we cannot give ourselves pause to think about where our beliefs come from and why and still believe without question, than not only is such a lifestyle not intellectually honest, it calls into question the honesty of how such a person votes and chooses their future family and friends.
Below this post are some interesting facts posted by my MySpace friend, LumberJackJeff, about Jesus and similarities to a "messiah" who preceded him. I would add that much of what was finally written about Jesus, along with the rest of the "new" testament was written nearly a hundred years after the death of Jesus. Such writings have in turn been rewritten and edited many times.
In the bible, we find written that "god is not the author of confusion, yet even the most learned biblical scholars often find themselves at odds with each other over many different interpretations. Aristotle's ethics were written about 300 years before the time of Jesus and there is plenty of evidence to suggest that the biblical writers borrowed heavily from Aristotle while leaving out the best parts about logic and reason, the two enemies of blind faith.
Any bible can be summed up in a page or less. I summarize my religion in just one word:
Kindness. And by that I mean to self and others.
This means real peace, love and understanding. We find in the ancient bibles these things, but along with contradictions advocating slavery, war, stoning people to death, butchering innocent children (the first born of every household), genocide by flood (from a supposedly all-loving, all knowing god who *knew* we would sin), violence from Jesus, "The Prince of Peace", against money lenders (the basis of every civilized economy) etc.
Kindness works, and requires peace, love and understanding. These are very real things, because none of us would be here without them. Children, who by default are *all* born atheists know these things before being indoctrinated with nonsensical "ten commandments" that most Christians I know can't even recite half of. We have to understand the natural human weaknesses and fears from which blind faith and religions are born, and attempt to educate the world about their own psychology and sociology.
"If love means wishing everyone a better world, then I can honestly say I love just about everyone."
- Chris Aable, M.A., author, "What is Self-Evolution?"

881. TM post 879 - Professing themselves to be wise they become fools. You are so filled with glorifying yourself, you miss what Christ has done for you. One thing we know for sure, you are dying, we were born to do so. If you are right then nothing lost for either one of us. If I am right all is lost for you, you will face a second death. Eternal punishment and seperation from God.
Man_in_Wilderness at 1:13AM on Apr 28th 2008
882. Man_in_the_wilderness, you philosophy is so "stuck in stupidity" that you can't see alternatives to your constant circular, twisted logic, beyond that narrow dark tunnel vision you've come to accept as "real".
A person has everything to lose by believing in your perverse notion of a god that sends people to a lake of "fire" - no thoughtful ethical or moral person would believe in such nonsense and that's why nearly a billion people in Asia alone have never been converted to your distorted view of death. If that's the way your god is, you deserve him, but decent, rational people would want nothing to do with it...um...if it existed - it doesn't except in your mind and that ancient book of lies. "God is not the author of confusion" - 1st Corinthians - yet, he most assuredly is, for he author people, and not only are many learned religious scholars people confused about which religious sect to scramble to in order to "not go to hell", but still more who are "confused" about your silly religion.
If you expect people to convert or believe based on the promise of reward in heaven or the threat of hell, you take away a person's free will to be good and moral for the sake of goodness alone, for you are now making it "conditional". Infants know the difference between good and bad long before they are indoctrinated by those who unthinkingly embrace their particular religious sect.
Pascal’s Wager fails because it falsely assumes only two options: you can believe in one particular god, or you can believe in no god at all. It simply doesn’t allow for the countless gods man has worshiped over the centuries.
Consider, for a moment, the actions of radical Islam extremists who flew airplanes into the World Trade Center. These young men believed so strongly in their religion that they essentially turned themselves into guided missiles, and went knowingly to the premature deaths. As incredible as it may seem to those of us in the US, these men actually believed not only in their specific version of god, but that their god would reward them by sending them directly to paradise.
In the aftermath of 9/11, many wondered how these young men could be so misguided. Did anyone wonder, on the other hand, if they could be right? And if they were right, what would it mean for those of us here in the commercial but Christian-run United States? If the fundamental Islamic extremists are right, then we are all infidels, and it is highly unlikely we will ever see paradise.
Now for the obvious question: how much sleep are you going to lose tonight, wondering if you might be missing out on the one true religion of fanatical Islam? And if your answer is little to none, why would you assume that anyone would lose sleep over your religion or that of the fanatical Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, the three Jims - Jimmy Baker, Jim Jones, Jimmy Swaggert, ad naseum?
A quote from an unknown email source:
While simplistic thinking may find Pascal’s Wager compelling, it’s important to remember that in the world of humankind’s religions, one hopeful believer could never play it one hundred percent safe. Become a born-again Christian, and you might be upsetting Allah. Worship Allah, and you might reincarnated as a beetle when you die. Become a Buddhist, and you might have to answer to the lightning bolts of almighty Zeus…and well, you can see the bind you’re in...it's the blind leading the blind.
Equally as important, since I know life on earth is limited and precious, I can *honestly* treat myself and others with respect instead thumping the bible at them as a substitute for reality. You have not been honest, and ironically call "god's creation" - "LIARS" while clinging to the lies in the bible. You ask me to cite some - here are a few dozen for openers - it's call evidence - not based on my words nor my interpretation, but the actual writing in the biblical texts that millions of "Christians" run their lives with, often hypocritically and to suit their own prejudices and biases. In doing so, you are living a life of lies. The good news is you can redeem yourself by facing the world honestly and not hiding in the wilderness of your biblical interpretations and illusions.

"Yeah, and I dont know but, it seems the world would be more depressing if people chose gayness. Ive heard England has become more gloomy. As if they needed help, with all that rain and all...

Good. Glad you think that. Stay the hell away then. It WOULD be gloomy with a bunch of fundie mo-mos all over the place condemning everybody.
I loved for 8 months in Amarillo, TX. Buckle of the Bible Belt. I almost went fucking crazy. You want to talk gloomy? It's really gloomy when you can't find one intelligent person to talk to, and everybody's talking about church, god, gays, hunting, how great Bush is, guns, and the Bible. Like living in a moron colony. One random square mile of New England is worth all of the Texas panhandle and nearby Oklahoma. "
Ha, yeah, I CAN DEFINITELY identify. I live in the eastern us and after a definite brain realization I went with these definite bible belters from the east including my mother, yeesh, to this perry stone conference. Oh god, I dont know but yeah, I felt evil oh so evil with my enlivened brain cells. These people are hypocrites though. All my life my mom has barely cleaned the house, and she's a little fat, and she doesnt have to be. Were from the east after all. There are brain cells here. Duh!
And about the gays. I dont know. Part of their guilt is the christians fault. But that doesnt mean christians are all bad or all christians are bad, I dont think.
Michelle at 9:11PM on Apr 28th 2008
