Did you miss me? Did you?! Well if you didn't, you're in luck. I'm going back into hiding for a few more days, after which point I'll catch you up on dinner with Dick Cheney, the Pope in New York, the employees of Hotel Monaco and the young Haitian actor who redesigned my shoelaces on the set of Law and Order: SVU. In the meantime...
My nightclub act is playing New York's Birdland this Monday. (Ticket information here.) It's called Mo Rocca 'Cross America and it's my celebration of our states through song.
Anyway my nightclub act features the incomparable Charlie Osgood, host of CBS News Sunday Morning. And that's not all: There's Annaleigh Ashford (currently Glinda in Wicked), Stanley Bahorek (a co-star of mine from Broadway's Spelling Bee), jazz singer and impresario Julian Fleisher (proprietor of my favorite podcast), my bestest pal and triple threat Brian O'Brien (from a zillion Broadway shows), plus a surprise mystery guest.
Here's a preview of a rehearsal for my act, with coaching from the incomparable Bebe Neuwirth:
Please come. And tell all your friends!

1. MO:
50 nifty United States and 13 original colonies....
Please Mo, re-work your entrance it lacks commitment.
Break a leg MO!
Many of the States have the Cardinal as the State Bird. This country has many birds to choose from.
Each state should have their very own bird.

4. Yay Bebe Neuwirth! That was a fun surprise.
What I want to know is if Ann Curry was done to scale in that cutout. If so, she has a preternaturally large head (even for someone in the media).
Go get 'em, Mo.

5. I'll see if I can make it. It's hard to convince people to see cabaret on a Monday night the week before final exams. Are you performing it again at any other times or at another venue Mo?

6. Mo and RoCats are our destiny:
Our brown tabby is nicknamed Ro. Our ShihZtu's name is Mo. Our land is named Birdland.
When we bought a big portion of an ex pig farm we had to have it surveyed and platted, and once formally platted it became a subdivision that we got to officially name. We wanted to name it Monster Island or Monster Land (long story, we didn't) so we chose Birdland as our our official subdivision name. Who doesn't like Charlie Parker, Weather Report, birdsong, and Mo?
More synchronicity. Mr. Mutant and I were just discussing the OK state song this evening. Wouldn't it be weird, given that the state song is from a Broadway show, if they'd chosen "Pore Jud Is Daid" or "I'm Just a Girl Who Cain't Say No"?
Break a leg, and make a CD!

7. I'm blushing so much, that I can't even type! That was lovely, babe. Not to mention, Ms. Neuwirth! (Lillith!) What a treat!
Of course you're going to kick ass tomorrow night! Damn, I wish that I lived in New York.
Smooches, babe. *Floating hearts and blushes.*

8. That was so worth watching again! Plus, I forgot to thank you earlier for being so thoughtful. (I had remembered too.)
I hope this post is coherent, because I'm still so giddy.
BTW, Ms. Neuwirth and Ms. Curry are stunning. I'm honored beyond comprehension.
Endless smooches.

9. Aw Mo,
I don't know where to begin.
1) You are sorely missed!
2) I just adore Dr. Lilith
3) It is amazing. I thought I was the only one who studied (literally) entrances on talk/comedy shows. Comedians have the hardest time because they try to get mileage from it. You are spot on with your entrance.
4) Last night I went on my Ouija board and conjured up Donald Tai Loy Ho (you have to be very specific on the Ouija board, anykind of riff-raff can float in) and I asked him to be on your shoulder Monday night for inspiration.
5) Just a suggestion: how about a bottle of bubbles at every table as a novelty/party favor for that song?

10. Aw Mo,
Speaking of bad entrances...
Definitely don't have a few belts before going on and act like this chap:

11. Aw Mo,
Now you got me stuck on this "entrance" thing the way you had me on the "perfect tie dimple" thing for weeks.
I know all the different types of entrances, but, when I factored you into the equation and your experience with Animal Planet (and my obsessive-compulsive need to classify as a result of taking two biology courses in college) I am now thinking of classifying the entrances according to animals.
For example, Chris Matthews would be the "Shark" entrance.
Any thoughts, Roccats?
Also, Mo, although I cautioned against trying to get mileage out of the entrance, I am surfeit with a House marathon and I can't dismiss the appeal of Chocolorocca...so there's this...
kids...don't try this at home:

13. Mo,
(((((((((((((((((((GOOD VIBES!))))))))))))))))))))
J.G......darn, I was trying to find the opening to The Dick Van Dyke Show, where he trips over the ottoman and post that for you.........
p.s. I almost posted the scene, "Here's Johnny!" from The Shining.........but I'm trying to be good for a change.....it is G.G. who inspires me so! :)
have a great Monday, Roccats!

14. Aw Mo,
You definitely have positive energy in your corner.
And Burgess Meredith has your back.
Clemmie, actually the comparison between Dick Van Dyke and Willie Wonka is quite accurate. Just as Wonka set up the spectacular flip by using the cane, so too did D.V.D. set up the later, hysterical remake introduction (where he scoots around the ottoman).
I wouldn't advise "The Shining" entrance under any circumstances Mo.
And now, my good luck offering: (I know you'll get this)
