David Blaine: Hero of the Stupid!
Posted Apr 30th 2008 4:37PM by Ben Greenman
It's only April and the silliest story of the year is already in and done: David Blaine has broken the world-record for breath-holding! He did it! On Oprah! He shattered the record previously held by Switzerland's Peter Colat, previously the world's best breath-holder! Has Blaine finally jumped the shark in his media stunts?

1. I don't know, Ben. Sounds mighty impressive to me. A 35-year-old man holding his breath for 17 minutes?
Blaine is a showman - this is what he does. I have no problem with it.

2. If his antics are known within any discipline within the scientific community that would take notice of his work on it's human health or physiological merit, then there may be some question of value in what he does by holding his breath. But, what he does is immature and life-threatening. Seems just another testimony to the pathetic circus some people attest to the already stupid portrait of humanity.

3. Mr. Greenman, what's your problem with someone (anyone) setting a new Guiness World Record?
Thanks for keeping it brief.

4. Your right very immature and very pathetic but this seems to be common with the acts of Cox Enterprises and I'm very upset to even watch such a stupid act,but they love Scott's porn or Amy's music,or Kane's Huffington Post who cares anymore because humanity is no were to be found or appreciated and impossible to defend by blocking and removing post the worst part is others that put faith in me are now my haters so whats the point choice was made along time ago so if you need help look else were and I say this not by my choice only because it is a fact and they have done a fine job of belittling me.

6. Again, I have to ask: does ANYone have ANY idea what Roger (comment 4) just said? He seems to be roaming from blog to blog, in drug- or alcohol-related haze. Someone save him, please!

7. Sailor...I'm not sure but that's one of the longest sentences I've ever read.

8. It was a stupid stunt. The only more stupid stunt ever pulled by Oprah was supporting Obama.

9. well now once again humanity has reached an all time low........with all that is obviously wrong with this country i cannot believe that this is a focus of attention. People are being refused reasonable health care, being jailed for first time non-violent drug possession but hey david frickin blain can hold his breath hooray
big moe at 11:14AM on May 1st 2008
10. Lighten up, big moe and Greenman. David Blaine holding his breath is not a threat to the republic.
Captain Negative at 1:04PM on May 1st 2008
11. When I was little, I could hold my breath longer than that. But Guiness Book of World Records didn't exist then. However, it worked on my mother. I ended up getting whatever it was I was holding my breath over. So, it was worth it.

14. He's a magician. It was just a trick. Guiness is gullible.
phil at 10:24PM on May 1st 2008
15. All of these feats by Blaine have been much less to do with trickery and much more to do with the power of the mind and the indomitable human spirit. Blaine has a will of iron and has trained very hard to develop his mental and physical strength. I understand how that can seem stupid to the uninitiated, but try to stand on a pole for 37 hours and see if you can walk the next day. Try fasting for a week with only a journal as your "entertainment." I understand that these "blogs" on aol are as much to push our buttons as they are to generate real thought and debate. But, I'm still amazed how the five sentences by the "author" can influence the comments so dramatically. Have you any wool, people? Yes, sir, yes, sir: three bags full. The question shouldn't be "Has David Blaine jumped the shark?" But, instead, "Who is David Blaine doing these feats for?" As always, the lips of wisdom are closed, except to the ears of understanding.
