Does PETA Hate People?
Posted May 7th 2008 12:05AM by Ben Greenman
Following the death of the filly Eight Belles in last weekend's Kentucky Derby, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has called for the suspension of jockey Gabriel Saez. Evidently, they don't believe in the ethical treatment of people: Saez wasn't doing anything different from any of the other jockeys on the course, and no one has suggested that his treatment of Eight Belles (including whipping) contributed materially to her death. There are, of course, some valid concerns here. The overbreeding of thoroughbreds seems to be producing animals with incredible musculature and delicate skeletons, which maximizes speed but minimizes durability. How this is Saez's fault, though, I'm not sure. Isn't he just a 20-year-old kid who was trying to do his job as best as possible -- and, in fact, did?

1. I used to be a PETA member. I quit because they are so over the line. You can't just be a vegetarian...you better be a vegan. You can't believe in humane farms, because there should not be farms at all. You can't believe in great zoos, because there should not be zoos. You can't believe in sensible horse breeding, because there should not be...you get my drift.
PETA is its own worst enemy. They repel many more people, people who care about animals, than they attract.

2. PETA,
Protect those animals that are truly being abused! I wear real fur and use leather accessories. My family breeds cattle to sell for meat. Pick your battles! Horseracing, fur wearing, beef eating, dog sledding have been going on for centuries! Go after those people who own 50 dogs, raise them in small cages and allow them to live in excriment. Go after those breeders who continue to inbreed and create animals who have problems. Go after pet owners who allow their animals to roam the streets and those who dump their unwanted animals. (esp pitbulls in my area).

3. PETA'S full of nutjobs, and they don't really help the animals that need it. If you want to help animals, try the Humane Society or ASPCA.
By the way, it wasn't the jockey's fault. I have an aunt in the business, and she said that it seems to her that they actually over-hardened the track in order to get a more impressive-looking race.

4. Of course they hate people. They're extremist. Let's not forget they butcher "rescued" animals, too.
They should be ignored en masse. Their opinion doesn't matter. Their existance doesn't matter. Just fade away into your own hell of anger.

5. Millions of years in the future (being optimistic) Humanity may evolve into those spots of "pure energy" beloved by Sci-Fi - until then, we deny our "Animal Nature" at our own loss. We are connected to the physical World, a part of the life cycle of this planet. Intelligence & Morality should guide our actions at the apex of the food chain, but for the forseeable future, Animal protein is a vital part of our diet!

6. Organizations like PETA are just outlets for The Humane Society Of the U.S. HSUSA is the largest ANTI Hunting organization in the world. These people contribute millions of dollars to ban hunting. Sporstman and Hunters spend more money on wildlife conservation than any other group. If you want to see animals suffer, just ban hunting.

7. PETA has a talent to get beautiful actresses to go nude, so there's one thing we should all learn from them.

8. whitney- there are many other organizations with the same goals.
PETA. Kills. Animals. Instead of allowing them to be rescued. They are killed, and disposed of. A little worse than hairspray to the face.
They're hypocritical and therefore useless to support.
Strados at 2:10PM on May 7th 2008
9. It's not like PETA doesn't kill rediculous amounts of animals every year. It's not like PETA hasn't dumped the bodies of the animals they killed into a dumpster behind a supermarket. PETA needs to fix their own peoblems before they start harping on other people to fix theirs. If you are truly an animal lover, than PETA should be the last place that you would ever want near your animals.

11. do people hate animals?
many of us them harm them for our entertainment, skin them when there are other resources available to use and wear them for fashion, lock them in cages or buy products from animals confound in small cages.
a couple things that people that love animals could do that isn't "extreme"
*buy eggs from freerange farms in your area, they are listed in the phone book
*not support rodeos, zoos, and derbies where the animals are used for sheer amusement and often injured for no reason but our own pleasure.
*not buy makeup, cleaning supplies, shampoo
that test on animals.
is it really necessary for a dog to be sprayed in the eyes with hair spray for us?
obviously the writter of this blog and the people that left comments already are so set in their opinions that they will make excuses for their destructive behavior towards animals because no one wants to be blamed for abuse or claim responsibility for feeding corporations money to hurt animals.
i have been a veggie for 3 yrs. so what? i am not saying you have to be a veggie or even vegan to think about how you effect the environment you live in. every little thing helps. if you refuse to stop eating meat, maybe looking at the back of a shampoo bottle and seeing if it is "cruelty free" or not maybe good enough.
there are a lot of vegans out there they may discourage people from "helping animals" but there are also a lot of christians that scare people away from churches too.
My understanding of PETA is that they are activist for animals and if people listen to their pleas then good but if not, they are still going to do the best they can to stop oppression to animals and educate anyone that will listen
good luck to anyone that wants to make a difference. even if you forget or give in to your desire for meat, dairy, leather products
don't give up. evey little bit helps and everytime you say "no" is important

14. whitney,
How old are you? 19? PETA kills animals. They kill about 2/3 of the animals they take in, because they don't believe in keeping pets and think the animals are better off dead. Evidence of this can be found on their tax returns, which are public information. PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to KNOWN terrorist groups in America that bomb labs. The leader of this group, the ALF, has given seminars on how to construct bombs out of household items and encouraged young people to bomb buildings.
Is that what you support? Terrorism?
You know that without lab testing on animals, medical research would halt? Do you know that medical research using animals has lead to hundreds of cures and procedures to save human lives? (Probably you or a member of your family.) Do you know that the second in command at PETA uses medicines derived from animal testing?
Grow up. If you want to be a vegetarian, fine. But PETA is an absolute JOKE and they don't do anything to actually make a difference. They are hypocrites and support terrorist groups.
Rodeos and derbies I can live without. But zoos are important - they give us a chance to learn about and observe animals we would normally never see. It gets kids interested in animals. Zoos are also responsible for keeping many species from becoming extinct. I would rather have the last 50 animals from a species live in zoos than be in the wild to die. Take two toed sloths for example... they live an average of 12 years in the wild, but life in a sanctuary or zoo more than doubles their life spans.
Grow up. Wise up.

15. See the excellent exposee on the PETA terrorist nuts in this month's Skeptical Enquirer magazine. It confirms everything K mentions and more. PETA exterminates abandoned pets while sending thousands $$$ to ALF, the number 1 domestic terrorist organization on the FBI list. These people would rather "free" a lab mouse than to have new medications that save human lives. Bad, bad PETA.
