Since 1964 Benihana has defined "Eatertainment." There are 80 restaurants world-wide. (Strangely there are more Benihanas in Venezuela than in Canada! And only one in Japan. Romania also has one.)
Clay Aiken is a longtime devotee of Benihana's. We spoke a lot about the Claymate phenomenon, which extends to Japan, where fans naturally are called Claysians. (Fans in Kuala Lumpur are Maclaysians, which sounds a little fast food-y.)
Much of our chat, which included a discussion of Pan-Claysian cuisine, didn't make it into the video below. Still I hope you enjoy...

76. Great funny interview. Clay's personality is amazing, and coupled with his stunning voice, he is a real gem.
On My Way Here is a stupendous cd, and the tracks are so varied, that there is something for everyone.
By the way, Clay, I am NOT a middle aged woman, and neither are my friends. We love YOU!

79. Too funny! Is there more where this came from? Can we see it?? Clay's quick wit matches his stelalr voice. Thanks, Mo.
SillyGoose at 7:03PM on May 9th 2008
80. Mo, you showed you cared about Clay's fan base!
.....soy products such as edamame are high in phytoestrogens......you've subliminally helped the Claymates obtain hormonal balance whilst stalking him! ( I'm teasing gang!-don't slash my tires)
Happy Mother's Day to those of you who've nurtured someone...(pets included) :)

81. Mo, that was the best Q&A about the fans that I've seen in five years. Thanks for giving us unfiltered Clay. I think if you auctioned the outtakes or unshown footage for charity, you would raise a lot of money. And I'm happy to hear you liked the album, it is terrific! Now please get Clay on The Daily Show. I'm sure Jon Stewart would find the self proclaimed political and news junkie a very funny and well-informed interview.

82. Thats more like a funny scene from a movie than an interview. Thank you so very very much ! more more more . . . .
(must be my cycle talking )

83. Mo- Great interview! I must confess I’m not big on American Idol singers (though they do serve a good purpose in that they remind me to test the battery in my smoke alarm).
That said, your interview showed Clay Aiken as a genuinely nice guy with a good sense of humor—your comment about his fans not having opposable thumbs to cast a vote for him was hilarious! In my opinion, he never sounded better (which of course was partly because of you!)

84. Consider selling the whole video, I think there are a lot of us out here who would purchase it. I loved that Clay knew the definition of omnivore-Gee I wonder how many people in the music industry could answer that question. Probably the same number that can actually sing.

85. Really fun interview--Thanks Mo! Made me hungry. I love Clay's new CD--not only is he a delightful man to watch eat and hear laugh, he sings amazingly. Thanks for sharing your lunch with Clay with us!

86. To psbinti - I don't think Clay said we were all menopausal. I think Mo said something about everyone being on the same cycle because we are always together. I may be wrong, wouldn't be the first time. Loved the interview and hope more people pick up the album. Best he's ever done, best album out this year - by far.
cookie at 7:33PM on May 9th 2008
87. psbintl, they were not talking about menopausal women but rather women's menstrual cycles. When women spend a lot of time together it is fairly common that their menstrual cycle comes at the same time. It wouldn't surprise me if while on tour Angie and Quianna had their periods at about the same time. They may also be pmsing around the same time, which I'm pretty sure would not be a joy for Clay. That is of course if they suffer from pms.
I think Mo kind of brought the subject up. I'm not sure because I only listened to it once and I didn't sleep at all last night. In my opinion Clay knew what they were talking about. Though I think Mo was wondering about Clay's female fans that spend a lot of time together following Clay around.

88. I burst out laughing. Thanks for a "real" conversation. Clay should try the edamame again with someone a little more versed in it's appeal.
Love the CD. Best thing yet from him. So personal and private yet so open and accessable. Thanks!
Jennyan at 7:43PM on May 9th 2008
89. "All Clay fans are not middle aged women, menopausal women!"
Huh? When did Clay say this? I watched 3 times and he never said anything like this.
Hilarious interview.

90. Mo,
Seriously, with the current crisis in Myanmar, if you could persuade the-powers-that-be that the outtakes could be used as a fund raising tool for relief efforts including UNICEF, I can assure you that the nomadic omnivore a/k/a as Claymates, Clay fans and Claynation, would make donations that would make anyone proud. Consider it please?
