President George Bush has given up golf in honor of U.S troops in Iraq. During an interview with Politico and Yahoo News, Bush said his decision to give up his favorite sport came after the August 2003 Bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad. The bombing killed Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was the top U.N. official in Iraq.
Bush continued to say, "I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."
Good job Bush. We're proud of you.
Did the preseident think that revealing his "sacrifice" would result in the American people increasing their respect for him? Thousands of troops have given up their lives for the war in Iraq , and thousands more continue to risk their lives in the Middle East. Instead of thinking of ways to END the war, Bush decides giving up golf makes him a respectable and honorable president.

31. For cryin' out loud, people- it's spelled GOUGING. As in "to force out an eye, i.e. with a thumb". And it hurts just as bad. Bush gave up golf in 2003, and we hear about it now? What f***ing ever! Uncle George is trying to avoid the gallows, folks. A 'stimulus' buy-off, announcing his giving up of a game he likely totally sucks at, faulting his 'intelligence' on Iraq (I like the double-entendre of that one.) What's next? Any guesses?

32. But going to war with Iraq and trying to start a war with Iran while al Qeida continues to grow in strength due to our pathetic foreign policy strategy while our economy falls into the wasteland is sending the right message?
Kudos to you Bush for putting the emphasis on golf. I can see you are a President with his priorities straight.

33. The reason gas prices are skyrocketing is that we are financing a disastrous war by borrowing money from our next major rival for world domination and major competitor for the world's finite resources, i.e. China. It's not that gas is going up in value it's the incredible shrinking value of the U.S. dollar. I think GWB gave up golf because he couldn't do it. He failed at everyting he tried before he became president and he's failed at everything he's tried since he became president

34. "Kudos to you Bush for putting the emphasis on golf. I can see you are a President with his priorities straight."
Do we know whether he called a press conference to announce this, or was this just something he posited in response to "how's your golf game?"
It does kind of make a difference.

Higher prices are resulting from Democratic Party Energy Policy limiting the supply side by restricting Domestic Production and Refining Capacity.
Government overspending by Political Prostitutes of both parties has weakened the dollar which is the main currency that is used in oil trading causing prices to rise as well. Also, the small margin requirements that allow speculators to "Middle Man" the world oil markets ads about 30% to a barrels price.

36. The cost of oil is jumping as fast as the Wall Street guys and girls can run up the price. It is being done on all fronts of the world where stocks and commodities can be wagered. The President has nothing to do with the price. If the costs rise the profits rise and it has nothing to do with the companies.
If the Government can stop the commodities wagering on the oil industry as a result of the negative effect on the world, and then the brain dead Leftist allow the refineries to be built, and ultimately allow the oil on American Ground to be drilled for we woul dnot need to take the boat trip to drive our vehicles.

38. What will happen to all you suffering from Bush Derangement Syndrome do when Bush leaves office? Who will you blame for every problem that comes your way? You can turn to your religion, Environmentalism, for solace --or maybe not. After all, the earth is "suffering" from climate change, what we conservatives/realists simply call "the weather."
Liberalism is a disease in and of itself.

Naturally, because G*d forbid we would not choose to work on alternative means to fuel and energy. Why is this concept so difficult to grasp, the possibilities of alternative energy are endless. Talk about bringing the Middle East to its knees and wiping them out not to mention preserving the beautiful landscape that G*d blessed this nation with that has provided us with a wonderful country.
Talk about being short sighted and incapable of thinking outside the box, if that is not brain challenged, what is?
Patty at 2:45PM on May 14th 2008
40. patti,
Until you can convince the CEO's at BIG OIL that they canPROFIT from alternative energy, they won't even budge. i'm with ya though.

41. Eight years ago, a new refinery opened in Lousiana. Holvesta located in the Virgan Islands (US) just doubled their capabilities for refining this year. Any and all Alaskan oil production goes to Japan and the far east - not the US. Also according to economists, based on supply and demand oil should cost no more that $55 a barrel. The prices above that level are caused by oil speculators. Ken Lay and Enron are still with us. Not to be left out - many basic food items are also being jacked up by speculation. All that is needed to bring this back in line is increase the percentage of money that a speculator needs to provide to hold the product. Currently only 5% is needed. Do the math. We need to not pay people for the privilige of costing us more for nothing.

43. The golf comment was part of an interview and he brought up the fact that he gave it up because he felt it sent "the wrong message" to have a Commander in chief golfing when soldiers are dying, so George why not bring the troops home and get yourself back in the game? And as far as gas prices when the president is a texas oil man who is quite friendly with the Saudi leaders who set the prices for oil on this planet, what do you expect? As with any drug the more addicts want it the higher the price goes. Petrol prices have been high in Europe for years, so they don't drive as much they take the train, tram, bus and bikes. We are spoiled in this country, too spoiled to give up our wheels.

45. Since he left the corrupt and incompetent republican party, Bob Barr is making a lot of sense. He's talking about how the republicans have increased the size of the federal government, messed up the economy and shredded the Bill of Rights in a phony, "war on terror."
Anyone who can't stand any of the three mainstream candidates now has a worthy alternative in Bob Barr.
Never thought I'd say that about Bob Barr.
I've actually read posts in this thread which defend the oil companies. Whew! Must be stock holders.
