President George Bush has given up golf in honor of U.S troops in Iraq. During an interview with Politico and Yahoo News, Bush said his decision to give up his favorite sport came after the August 2003 Bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad. The bombing killed Sergio Vieira de Mello, who was the top U.N. official in Iraq.
Bush continued to say, "I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf. I feel I owe it to the families to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal."
Good job Bush. We're proud of you.
Did the preseident think that revealing his "sacrifice" would result in the American people increasing their respect for him? Thousands of troops have given up their lives for the war in Iraq , and thousands more continue to risk their lives in the Middle East. Instead of thinking of ways to END the war, Bush decides giving up golf makes him a respectable and honorable president.

46. Why don't you make a big sacrifice Chump.....Give up this blog and return to the anonymity you are accustomed to and richly deserve.

47. How about making Detroit make cars and SUVs get better mileage - they can do it - they've done it before. Any new production will not come to market for at least 5 years. WE need to conserve...

48. That's ridiculous, I don't care whether he plays golf or not. Doesn't bring the troops home. If he wants to show respect, how about benefits for families of the fallen? More protective gear and better equipment for those fighting?

49. "And as far as gas prices when the president is a texas oil man who is quite friendly with the Saudi leaders who set the prices for oil on this planet, what do you expect?"
I'd expect gas prices to be going down at a time when the texas oil man is grasping at straws for anything to improve his approval ratings.
It would be kind of like saying that the growth of Wal*Mart to the point of virtually calling the shots in the retail sector and driving manufacturing business overseas with it's continual cost beat-down on suppliers was due to having the ex Gov of Arkansas in the Oval office for 8 years.

50.
This administration relaxed MPG requirements for the car companies a few years ago - look it up.
NOW they've decided they're all for fuel economy. Oh sorry forgot - it's the LIBERALS fault ! They're the ones responsible. Sure they are. It's always the liberals - whatever the problem.
Maybe it's time for another secret energy task force run by Vice-President Cheney like the one held in 2001. Just how did that turn out anyway ?

51. I have no problem with the price of gas going up, in fact I think it should. We are paying much less than elsewhere in the world, Europe for example, but that's not why I don't mind the increase. Having the price of gas go up is the only true way to get the public to start really focusing on alternative power sources. Why should companys pour money into Hydrogen and bio-fuels if gas is still cheap?
At some point the oil will run dry, and we had better have another power supply in place before that day happens. Ethenol isn't the answer, as all of the evidence points out, but Hydrogen and other types of fuel could be, but the government needs to start seriously funding the research so the breakthroughs we need can happen.
While I think the Liberal Dems are full of @#$%, as well as the Right Wing Repubs but just not as much, I have to agree with blocking the drilling in Alaska. No reason to ruin the environment and help Big Oil at the same time. Force the oil companies to start investing in finding ways to create and store Hydrogen fuel cheaply and safely.
BTW, Bush for the first time EVER I will agree with the young Turks. Bush giving up golf means nothing. Going public about it is worse.

52. I too will ignore Stank's idiotic report and chime in on the Oil/Gas Issue. Like it or not, the US and other industrial countries run on an oil-based economy. Anyone else concerned about the fact that we won't drill anywhere, won't reduce the taxes, thus can't free ourselves from the hostage-to-OPEC status. Punishing the oil companies reeks of socialism and the "alternative fuels" approach (favored by the likes of Obama) sounds like closing our eyes and wishing the problem away...

53. He gave up golfing, for the troops. Oh my God that poor man, talk about the ultimate sacrifice. After everything he has done for (or, rather to) the troops.
Over 4,000 of our finest are dead and gone forever. Over 20,000 wounded, loss limbs, brain damage, some with mental health issues, most will never be the same.
How appropriate for this president to give up a hobby to honor the fallen heroes. He is such a giver that commander in chief. So, when does this ass finally leave Washington? Maybe we could all pitch in and built him a golf course in Iraq!

Over 7,500 Soldiers died under the eight years of President Clinton!!!!!!! Under the first six years of 'W' there have been 8,792 Soldiers killed.
Since President Clinton oversaw no major combat actions, please explain how 7,500 Soldiers died on his watch?

57. I am quite frankly disappointed with my fellow human beings of America. We are right now experiencing a fraction of selfishness in the American people, which war was bound to bring about as it did in all cases: not wanting to lose family for the fight on terrorism. We are a kind nation, and the result of it is a somewhat soft emotional status has imprisoned us. We have obviously forgotten that we live in a world where dark entities exist.
Americans- for the most part- have lived a great existence and would rather not jeopardize it for our own comfortable status-quo. The result is wanting to pull out of a war- which most democrats actually agreed to.
You come on this blog, as most democrats aptly do, to show your bashing of George Bush. He quit golf so it has to be a political agenda? For what reason? He has already attained the highest office of political success. Why would he care to get poularity?
This is something I somewhat admire about George Bush. He doesn't care about popularity, he makes the decisions he feels he has to make.
People like you will repeat over and over again to pull out of Iraq, but why does it bother you so much that he is giving these people a free government? George Bush is somewhat right about it when he says only future will look righteously on his decisions. Very similarly on how the future looked well on FDR's deeds.
I could really understand that it hurts to lose a family member to a war, but isn't losing a family member no matter how the death, hurt just a equally as losing a family member to something as the ravages of cancer?
I know all of you Democrats- which includes Hillary Clinton- didn't think this war would bring no casualties, but I am sorry to regret to you that this is a burden of war. It's sad that people have to die in war, but we have to be steadfast in our resolve to eliminate these radical human beings.
I sincerely wish us humans weren't so selfish in our ways. Sure we help international organizations with money, but isn't it extremely easy to write a check to the Red Cross our Christian Fund? Writing a check is easy, putting the physical labor in is hard. We are all brothers and sisters in this world- the Chinese, Iraqis, Iranians, British and so on and so forth- so why are we so selfish to actually help people who actually need it. These American Soldiers no that they risk their life and they willingly did it. People die everyday by cars, does it mean we ban them? Their is never something wrong with freeing a people stop being so selfish and diminishing the morale of the troops- which this does. How do you think these troops feel without having the whole country behind them.
We could do this, we just have to all work together. And we do not need the bashing of other people because it does nothing for the greater good. So what is your point of actually writing this.

58. wow...way to spin the story Turk moron. He was asked why he gave up golf...and he said why. Now you go spin it as if its the only thing he did and he said it purposely to get people to think he is a good guy....and he says it NOW, after 5 years, not when he decided to give it up. You make it out to be like...oh, gee, big deal. People die, you gave up golf. Thats not the point. But of course you are an idiot. Wow, people just hate Bush no matter what he does. Grow up.

60. Cenk,
We've been in Italy since 1943, Germany and Japan since 1945, and South Korea since 1950. We should do things in order. So, before exiting Iraq, we should pull out of the other countries, in order in which we commence our prsence.
Oh, wait. We are a part of NATO, so we can't leave Italy and Germany. The Japanese want us to stay because of China, and South Korea wants us to stay because of North Korea.
Ronald Reagan used to call the U.S. a shining city upon a hill. Well, the Middle East needs a shining city upon a hill, and that city will be the new, democratic Iraq.
And, to quote George M. Cohen, we won't be back until it's over over there.
As for W. giving up golf, does he understand how many of our troops have taken their golf clubs to Iraq and made their own courses? The fact that their were military actions didn't stop Truman, Ike, JFK, LBJ, or Nixon from playing golf, and his father kept taking the speedboat out during the Gulf War. He just called world leaders on his cell phone.
